Didnt notice that. I did know that FZ wrote about the cover of ML. Down at the bottom of ML is "Weasels Ripped My Flesh". I like FZs cover better.

Cormega,

Take a look at these, direct from Abbey Road Studios here in the UK, you can download free demo versions, could be just what you are looking for, they don't come cheap, but quality never does.

Peace, love and beautiful music

1969, I was at the Pasedena Rose Palace, in California and I saw

The Chambers Brothers
Elvin Bishop Blues Band
Brian Auger & Trinity
AND, TAH DAH
Led Zeppelin

We were 8-10 feet from the stage.

Crazy thing was , they each played two sets in full rotation.

Between the first and second set RP sat at the edge of the stage, we got right up there and we chattted. JP wouldn't come near us. Go figure!

I saw them again at the L.A. Forum in like '72-'73, soon after I got married. RP said he had a headache and asked the crowd for something. I threw a bottle of Excedrin (I pop 'em like candy) on the stage and he thanked me, from afar. The reviews the next day said someone threw some "drugs" on the stage. Technically, they were right. Although I'm sure they thought it was something more potent. Gave me and the crowd I was with a laugh (since they knew I was not a stoner).

I would rank the HOTH tour as one of the top 5-10 concerts I saw.
Others
Rush (man what a load of sound for 3 guys)
Zappa (once with about 3000 people at Armadillo World Headquarters, once with about 15,000)
Dweezil (yep he was that good)
Return to forever - Al Dimeola, Stanley Clark, Chick Corea
Gong (they are insane, but from a chemically induced insanity)
Strawberry Alarm Clock/Iron Butterfly (my first concert)

Feb. 7th, 1953.

Hendrix was my first concert.
I was 16 and just started driving.
Cat Mother and the All Night News Boys opened.
CTA (Chicago Transit Authority, later just Chicago) was the second act.

I never got to see Cream, so Blind Faith was exciting in their own way.

I'll never regret seeing the Doors since it was before the decline of JM.

Mr. Bunny,

don't hate me because my treehouse is beautiful. My wife already does, but one does have to indulge every once in a while. Cheaper than my old habits, and it doesn't go up in smoke, either.

But they really are excellent comp/limiters. The comp is pretty mild-mannered but with the limiter you can get all sorts of nice distortion, too. Burgin is a nice guy, too, met him when he was up here in Dallas.

Best concert I never saw: the Beatles.

In those days, we usually got arena "road shows", which featured a dozen bands, every one of which had a current top 40 record on the charts. Each band would play like 4 songs and then the headliner would come on, some old timer who'd actually had 2 or more hits.

The Gene Pitney Road Show comes to mind. Admission was $2.00.

Then along came the Beatles. No opening act. Admission $5.00! Hey in those days five bucks was a tank of gas, a movie and burgers afterward. I said I'd wait and catch them next time they came to town. Of course, they never did.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

WoW! I've gotten alot of miles out of this thread. Thanks again for all the suggestions!

My first concert ever? Head East, Pat Travers and RUSH. Pretty girls galore, the strange, pungent, yet wonderfully calming smell in the air...hook, line and sinker, I was caught! Have loved music ever since! Being a drummer, seeing Tommy Aldridge and Neil Peart in the same night just blew me away!

One of my first concerts was Deep Purple, but it was in 1986 or something. LOL. I still love early Deep Purple. John Lord on Keys, Ian Paice on Drums, Richie Blackmore guitar and Ian Gillan vocals, what a great lineup. Give me the recording gear used on early Purple albums and I'll pretend I never heard of Sonar. In my defense, I do have all this stuff on record. LP that is, I wasn't arrested or anything. I'm surprised space_cowboy didn't mention Genesis. They were way cool. Even though Gabriel was great, I would love to have seen them with Chester Thompson on drums live so I could see Phil and Chester play drums together. By the time I saw Rush, well, they wern't Rush anymore (thats kind of harsh though). I guess that goes for Deep Purple also, but Perfect Strangers was a good album, Signals was not.

I recently read how, when they recorded the bass for Paperback Writer (1966), in an effort to get better bass content and make the record sound more like American records, they used a loudspeaker as a microphone, and positioned it in front of the bass speaker. It does have a great bass sound, and is a great bass part... as does its mate, Rain... speaking of (proto-psychedelic) 60's style production.

If you want an authentic effect I would get rid of all the gack... no heavy processing effects.... except for a compressor on each track and flatten as much as possible(Make the wav forms look flat on top and bottom) then playback each track using a good speaker(monitor) into a bathroom... Record with a mic a few feet away from the speaker... in the center of the bathroom.. then once you have all the tracks re-recorded blend them together to get an "airy" and "flat" sound... basically little dynamic range...

Oh and when micing the drums only use one overhead and a kick... you might not need the kick but you can always add a little thump to the mix... This will give you that classic sound of limited tracks they had then

The bass is always "Muffled" except for bands like Floyd(Later 60's-70's) who spend so much time getting it right they don't have a bad sounding anything in there mixes. Roll the high end off and boost 25-500 hertz.. then do the re-recording trick

Eddie Kramer (Kiss, Hendricks, Beetles) likes to use little rooms.. like putting a bass amp in a closet where it can roll back and fourth and give a uniqueness to it.. he was one of the main engineers of that time.

Most of all everything had hiss.. tape hiss, tube hiss, preamp hiss....  You can get a crappy board, or a good one I guess and crank up the preamp to max... it will hiss away... record it and mix it to your own taste.

Have fun

Reading the posts in this thread gave me a good chuckle. A number of people talking about tubes and amps and rooms. No, I'm not skeptical. Here's why I laugh: everything I do is digital audio, but for some reason, every song I post elicits comments such as: "Great 60s vibe," or "Sounds like the 60s." Except one song which drew a 70s comparison. Now, I do not intentionally try to sound 60sish, it just turns out that way, even though I seem to avoid all the recommended methods for sounding 60sish. I don't even know what I'm doing so it ends up that way. It just ends up that way. I can't shake my past! I don't know how to mix!

A few guitars, a couple of basses, a MIDI controller, a mandolin, a banjo, a mic, PodFarm2
