RE: OT: Studio Photos... 2008/10/23 00:20:57 (permalink)

Top is the Isolation booth, curtains on two walls, bare drywall on two walls, so it is not a dead space, but no early reflections either. Behind one of the curtains is a full size "Do Not Pass" metal road sign, so opening that curtain will add some sharp early reflections...not quite a "plate", but effective.
Middle two are the control room desk. The desk itself is an old bar top, originally from the local VFW, it was in the house when we bought it, so it was perfect for the studio desk...many a beer has passed over this desk. The window between the studio/control room is a double pane sliding door with out the frame, and the curtains were made by my wife.
In the studio proper, There are two panels on the wall shown, one on the opposite wall to cut reflections, but no other treatment, so the room is probably not well balanced acoustically, but it serves its purpose. All mic/guitar/headphone wiring plugs into the panel in the wall, hard wired to a panel under the control room desk, no wires need to go under the door to the mixer.
Every inch of the studio was built by hand, drywall over soundboard on the walls and ceiling, 3/4" rubber isolation strips at the top and bottom of the walls between the plates and joist/floor, hard wiring from the studio and Iso booth, and still, not one paying customer. All of my recording jobs have been on line, the customer was hundreds of miles away...

Albert

Firstl welcome back Freeze1st! Get your 'studio' picture up, we're nosey here!

Albert's got the best set-up, saw the pics on his website - awesome to have that available. That's my idea of heaven.

Stevestrummer - I've been drooling over that wine-couloured electric you've got but can't make out the name - what it is?

It's a Line 6 Variax 700 - it has built-in modelling software for a range of 'classic' guitars. Not the same, I admit, as owning the real things, but much more practical!

Albert
Love the studio - very nice

Here's the updated snap with the Edirol PCR-800 in its new home - I've thoughfully put a pic of the DAW as it was before on the screen to save you having to go back to page 1 of this thread:

Sadly I need it for things like reading the liner notes on CD's, not recording contracts

Nice, Greg. I like the heavy gauge Dunlops tucked into the Squire and the Epi.
Do I see that funky little booster switch on the Epi?

The Epiphone Les Paul has no booster switch, I think you're seeing the pick-up switch. It's near the dials on the Epis. I forgot my Squire P-Bass that's been in the closet so long--out of sight-out of mind! The little Fender Champ amp has a great tone and natural distorton when turned all the way up. Maybe someday I'll use it for something. I usually play through the Crate amp.

Hey Albert and Greg, do you still use your 4 track Portastudios? Or is it like mine, just sitting there for old times sake. I keep thinking, maybe one day I'll need it as a back up.

I've used mine 3 times in the last few years: took it to a friend's house to record her granddaughter (Anna Young) singing a part for my song "New Year's Day". Took it to work to record a co-worker (Carla Cook) for a part in my song "Lost In You", and recorded the sound effects for my song "Never Going Home" on it. Hooked it up to my interface and recorded all that to MC/SHS.

The four track is set up to mix four inputs down to a stereo track that goes into the yamaha mixer, then that can be mixed down with a couple channels and out to the emu 1820, so in theory it is set up to help if I was to run into a situation were there was a drummer in the studio. Got all the patch cords (made a bunch of patch cords myself, bought three hundred foot of lo hz cable when I built the studio, most is in the walls, then made custom cords) and the routing is drawn out on paper, even did a mock up once to make sure it would work. Now, all I need is to get a drummer into the studio.
A few years back there were musicians hanging around all the time, the places I lived in had small smoke filled beer soaked rooms filled with mics and guitars and people six nights a week. Now, not so much. Yeah, I had to quit drinking and staying up all night and playing around like I was still a kid and all of that, but sometimes, I wish...I wish...
