Sonar 8: How to record from a Bus in realtime?

Ok, I just got my S8PE. I thought I remember reading about being able to record from busses in realtime. Can someone walk me through this? I'm trying to send the audio metronome to a bus, then record it to an input without having to physically route an output to an input on my interface. I thought this was possible, but maybe I'm wrong.

The output of a buss can be another buss or a physical output on your sound card, but not an input on your sound card.

The input of a track needs to be a digital source on your sound card. A buss is going to be going to an output.

They are two completely different streams.

You could, however run a patch cable between the (unique) hardware out chosen by the metronome (or it's buss) to an input on your hardware and have your armed track aimed at that.

You can basically do this by using realtime bounce and source category set to buses. Not sure what you mean exactly by "record from buses in realtime" but if you want to capture live inputs, check the live inputs box in the bounce dialog.

By "record buses in realtime" I mean, as the click is playing, I want to send the output of the click to a new track (like Pro Tools) and record it so I can have "printed" click track. I was trying to avoid routing a physical output to an input since that wastes an input. Looks like this can't be done. Bummer.

You can its called real time bounce and it allows you to print to disc what you here including fx.

    hello noel!

are there any plans to implement a direct routing of a vsti as input for an audiochannel? being able to just record it with all its fx and automation without having to use the bounce dialogue?
actually with all the respect i think that the way that "realtime" recording of vstis is done now in sp8 is very quirky..

    thanks

Whatever you might call it, its basically a bounce operation since you are playing back track data and capturing the rendered VST output. Could this process be streamlined to have fewer clicks and not use the bounce dialog, of course. But it wouldn't buy you anything that you cant accomplish today in SONAR.

Yes you can most certainly print the output of the metronome click to a track. Just assign the metronome to a bus, set source category to buses and then bounce that specific bus to a track. You don't even require realtime bounce for this if all you want is the metronome click.

    thanks for your reply:

actually i have discussed the benefit of such a feature in some threads and there are quite a few fellow sonarians who would like it and think that it would be an enhancement. (also others dont...)
by the actual imlementation its not spontaneous at all .. you have to select tracks - you must deteremin the lenght befor starting .. you have to open the bounce dialogue.. etc..etc..
what i would love to have would be just the ability to play directly from an vsti to an audiochannel like i would play an external synth into an audiochannel...just by arming the audiotrack....(one single operation)
often i prefer the sponatneous approach for recording plugins - away from the temptation of later quantisation and editing...
since sonar has so many routing possibilities i just wonder why that one isnt there too (as you know that most other big sequencers can do this)
any chance to see this in the future?

    thanks

Yes its possible. As I said its primarily a rework of the GUI to do this and workflow improvements. The functionality and capability is already there.

Oh...sorry about that, I misunderstood. Clicking heels is a reference to a famous American classic television show called "The Wizard of Oz". In the show the main character falls into a dream which becomes the set for the show. Throughout the show she is attempting to leave the dreamland (not realizing it is a dream) to go back home. In the end she is told to click the heels of her shoes together and chant "There's no place like home" to magically be returned home (at which point she wakes up from her dream).

I am doing a project where I had a drummer playing to a click on a number of songs. I used session drummer 2 to program a click with the step sequencer because I like the range of sounds I have available and it is familiar to me. I then bounced the session drummer track and corresponding midi track to a new track, then archived the SD2 original in a folder for any changes that might need to be made. I did this for each track in advance and had a good sounding click track using almost no resources that I could route any place. Maybe not the most streamlined method, but it sure worked for me.

Thank you. That definitely helps. I would like to see bus recording implemented the way tomflair speaks of. This is how it's done in Pro Tools and it's very helpful because it allows you to record from several different busses at the same time very quickly.

The thing that's not possible right now with realtime bounce is fiddling controls on the screen. As far as I can see, Sonar doesn't take mouse input while a bounce is in progress - MIDI input yes, but not mouse. Some synths have parameters that cannot be automated or MIDI-controlled, but can yield interesting results when tweaked while recording.

There are some cases where a "real-time" recording of ANY sound would be VERY helpfull!

Lots of times I get to use a VSTi plug with poor implementation of automation-midi control! In other words you can tweak with your mouse various knobs-sliders of the plug in but not with automation as some of those parameters are not exposed to DAW automation! This of course is a weakness-bad design of the plug in and NOT Sonar BUT if Sonar COULD have a "R" button on VST synth audio tracks (currently audio tracks have "R" buttons but not an audio track that gets its INput from a VST synth) or EVEN busses this would be VERY helpfull! For such cases as this one, bounce is not of any help!

Another great reason for such a feature would be that some users have specifically asked for a way to record their INs WITH FXbin applied!

I think a "R" button on busses or in other words the ability to "record" into an audio track REAL-time not only physical INputs of your audio interface BUT also ANY source of sound (VST synths, multiple other tracks into busses etc etc) would REALLY satisfy LOTS of users requests!

    my 2 cents

You can route your output back to Sonar's input with any mixer. The problem with analog mixers, or any mixer that's not "in the box" is latency. There's going to be a 12ms or more delay between your playing and recording, which can be troubling with you're trying to play along with other recorded tracks.

But, using a pro level digital audio device (like the one Sonar Power Studio or V700 package), you route through the digital mixer without latency.

Thanks. I already understand this. You see, using Pro Tools, I can do it without wasting an physical input. In Pro Tools, the click IS a bus, so I tell track 1 to record from bus 1 and I record this click in realtime and still have 16 inputs available for mics. So I can record: 12 tracks of drums+Bass+GTR1+GTR2+Voc+ Click. If I have to waste an input for the click, then sometimes I can't record the entire band without creating the click first or sacrificing my drum mic setup. I guess I will just have to do Noel's method and create the click first. I like to have the click as a visual reference. Also, I chop up the printed click track so I can make it pop in on parts of the song where the drums drop out.

yes but since the audiostream is already in the system its not very logical to send it out to record it again...
actually i have an rme card that (as many other cards) has optical adat i/o so i coild route it like that...avoiding conversion (still adat is "only" 24 bit...
but again thats not the point: its not that we dont know workarounds- its the fact that those workarounds should NOT be necessary since all this is an easy going thing in other sequencers and since even noel already said "...As I said its primarily a rework of the GUI to do this and workflow improvements. This is why I route my metronome to a buss. A little volume automation on the bus will bring the metronome in and out as needed.

Right. You can however do this via a control surface with ACT during a realtime bounce.

You can print the output of multiple buses to a single track in SONAR very easily. Just solo the buses you want and do a bounce to track with the default options. No realtime bounce is required.

RE: Sonar 8: How to record from a Bus in realtime? February 02, 09 3:24 PM (permalink)
You already do. See my last post.

    ORIGINAL: Lay In Wait

You see, using Pro Tools, I can do it without wasting an physical input. In Pro Tools, the click IS a bus, so I tell track 1 to record from bus 1 and I record this click in realtime and still have 16 inputs available for mics.

I would love to have this function in Sonar.
