Re:LAYERS: When will Cakewalk devote time to Implementing Layers properly?

rbowser Kurtly ...there are editing tools that only work on layers... Hi, Kurtly - I know that using separate tracks isn't as convenient, and so isn't a viable alternative for a lot of people, but I can't think of editing tools that only work on layers--? What are they? RB The mute tool only works in isolation mode on one track at a time but multiple layers. I use isolation mode (ctrl+Mute tool) all the time to highlight the layer I want to use and mute all the others simultaneously. AFAIK there is no other way to do that and for me it's the only way to comp efficiently. When the tracks are clip grouped as well it is relatively quick to comp a pair of guitar tracks of which I may have 8 takes say. That's 16 'tracks' but I can highlight one using the above method and it instantly mutes 14 of them and leaves the 2 I want audible. Imagine doing that with say 8 tracks of drums and 8 takes. That's 64 tracks that without the mute tool isolation mode method in layers would all need to be muted individually. Add to that the mess that layers can get into and it soon becomes a nightmare. As I've said I don't have a great issue with the editing tools, I can work very quickly but the mute/solo arrangement on layers and layers in general need an overhaul. IMHO of course.

I use isolation mode (ctrl+Mute tool) all the time to highlight the layer I want to use and mute all the others simultaneously... Thanks for that, FBB - It's an education for me, because I don't deal with live drums, the complicated multiple takes and tracks - I'm dizzy thinking about it. When I work with layers, just using the Solo button on a layer is all I need, since that automatically mutes the other layers. --SOmewhere, on this thread maybe?--someone was talking about laboriously clicking all those tiny Mute buttons on layers - and I thought maybe that person didn't know that clicking one layer's Solo button does the same thing. Meanwhile - layers - they are messy, fer sure. Thanks again for the info. RB

Yes Randy they need a bit of TLC that's for sure. For anyone reading this thread here's a handy tip I use for quick soloing of layers, although it's probably not for everyone because it uses click lock which is a bit quirky if you're not used to it. Anyway someone may find this useful. - Set click lock to on (Windows mouse preferences) with a click lock time to suit yourself.
- Click on a solo button in the layers view and hold long enough to activate click lock.
Now when you roll over a layer (anywhere on the layer) that layer will be soloed. That behaviour will continue until you click again to deactivate the lock. It has saved me lots of frustration trying to click on the miniature solo buttons. I find it a very quick way to solo layers.

I have had the same issue with using layers with multi-drums. Although this was frustrating, I found the rebuild and editing bugs with layers more of a problem and had to change my workflow to rely less on layers.

kgarello - your sig says you're still on 8.3, if that's the case there's good news and bad news. The good news is that the quirky editing bugs have gone, the ones where huge chunks of material would auto mute when selecting smaller chunks. The bad news is rebuild layers hasn't changed.

Since this is the most popular layers thread, I figured I'd pile on with another tidbit: I have two layers filled with MIDI clips. I lasso them, drag-copy them to a later part in the song, and when I paste two things happen: 1) the original two layers collapse two one layer (the topmost) of overlapped clips 2) the new, copied clips ALSO collapse to the OTHER (bottom-most) layer Obviously this is far from ideal. I didn't even notice right away until I started doing some more arranging and realizing I've got WAY too many double notes. Why have layers always been a little buggy? They z-stack in unpredictable ways, they fail to obey where mouse drop edits should go. Blarg.

FBB I have upgraded to X1B - but haven't had the opportunity to work with layers yet. I am still getting used to the X1 interface as I left it alone until B came out. Wicked's description of layer behavior is the type of thing that I have dealt with. Ken

I beg anyone who has encountered any problems with layers, to please fill out a problem report or a feature request if layers don't do what you need them to. This has gone on for too long. Version after version of Sonar with no mention of layers and no improvements. I just saw a new post in which the Pro Channel is still having problems a "bug" just confirmed by Noel, and the answer to it slipping through the cracks was that no one ever filled out a Problem Report Form regarding the issue. I guess it's our job to do QC for Cakewalk. Then so be it! Problem Report Form Feature Request Form

BEcause I work with layers a lot I've assigned a key binding for toggle layers (on/off) to CTRL+ENTER (numpad) and rebuild layers to CTRL+ "Num PAD+". If i press CTRL+A then CTRL+ enter, I can toggle between the layer view on all tracks in the project. Its a quick time saver for me. I had it put in when I was working 8.5 and X1 brought it over when I upgraded.

It really is a shame though that they spent so much time updating the user interface when what Sonar really needs is workflow and stability enhancements and to fix current features...

I set my drums up with the routings effects gates and such and save them as a track template. I insert the drums and move them to a folder drums take 1 record the drums and then insert another set move them toe another folder drums take 2. I can hide archive each set I also do layers with multiple starts and stop then comp them together. I can hide or display the drum and use separate parts. all using Ctrl H works fast and great I also set the drum mix up with panning so the drummer gets the perspective of what we are going for on the song. . After a couple of session you will have all of your eq's basic volume levels compressions et so playback is quite awesome and immediate.
