I personally need more than one, which is why I bought the vstudio 700. The main reason I like it is that I can close my eyes and mix the move the faders for multiple tracks up and down in the mix and very quickly hear different results.

If you don't need it, don't get one, but I find it to be a massive difference.

As for automating, I have automated several tracks at once, but only for fade down to nothing. For intricate things, I usually use a single fader, or in my case, the xray T bar, and then finish it up with the mouse.

I agree, that's what I was doing when I used my VS-1880, sometimes you need to turn away from the visual and let your ears decide!

And it's a very critical point.

I'm making a conscious effort to look away from my monitor now, because I find I'm focusing too much on how my music LOOKS than how it SOUNDS.  I know that may come across as an odd statement, but it's easy to fool the brain into what it's hearing when you have pretty visuals in front of you.

Just my 1/2 cent, anyway...

As for jobs, there are quite a few research fellowships that I am interested in once I have finished my PHD or RHD and as I say Professor of Music (The Honcho) and I have seen two jobs so far this year for this kind of postistion one was 80,000 and another was 120,000 if I remember.

As for teaching jobs there have been at least 10 more advertised here in OZ and the wage was between 60,000 and 80,000.

So I will take my technobable, yes moving on from this post and study some more, mix and master a song that I have been working on, oh yea another reason to do a PHD everything is payed for!!!!  I need a copy of Cubase ok here you go sir!!!  I think I get access to a new laptop and $1500 a year for my project so la la to you (this is not the case for all uni's some are more generous and some are less).  What more can I say!!!!

Having 8 or more faders lets one move those faders at the same time if needed and that is often needed.

but why? you cannot move precisely and accurately  more then one unless you're chameleon...

just realized not everybody may know here that chameleon can look and see (focus) with each eye pointed to different direction so it could adjust 2 channels simultaneously, just like John.

Thanks Kark, beautifully summed up.

It's just a waste of bandwidth, and a great example of why I spend very little time on here now.
Lately I tend to look in for a bit of entertainment when I'm bored ... like waiting for big downloads
to finish and stuff.

And well, you do have to laugh at some of this stuff.

It is refreshing to see some of the good folks like yourself still hanging on in here helping out
the community of those with genuine needs and questions.

Keep up the good work - you are appreciated, many of your posts have helped me immensely. :-)

Cheers - Cliff

Oh yeah,

I forgot to mention, since I'm here.

I've got 9 faders, but only 8 fingers and two big thumbs.

Fortunately one of those faders is the master, so I can fade everything once - it's really cool.

I struggle with the other 8, but if I concentrate really hard I can manage more than one at a time.

Having only two ears hasn't been a real problem, they're both working fine, I cleaned them out this
morning so I back to hearing in full stereo again.

I hope that was helpful to the OP :-)

Cheers - Cliff

Thanks for the props Cliff. I wonder if we're related in some distant way?

It does get a little weary sometimes, and I'm trying to keep my nose out of some of the more controversial threads nowadays.

As long as I keep having fun making my racket music I'll keep on trying to help, and learn of course. That's the good thing about this community what someone doesn't know someone else will.

Hey Karl, we're all supposed to be related in a distant way :-)

It's quite possible, I really don't know much about my family tree.

My Mum just had a trip to the U.K. end of last year and met up with some of the rellies.
There's a family 'Bible' that she was given and supposed to be bringing home, but apparently it was
soo huge and heavy she had to leave it behind.

There were some really interesting and funny stories she brought home to tell though.
Now I'm just laughing like heel thinking about it.

See ... it IS good to come here at time !.

Take care and I'll see you 'round here :-)

Cheers - Cliff

By the way, I was going to say that my MCU Pro is away for servicing at the moment (the 'scribble strip' died). You really do appreciate the benefit of multiple faders when you suddenly lose them!

I love faders.... the more the better... It's probably something I like from working on huge mixing consoles in live venues. If I had the money I'd buy a huge control surface setup with as many faders as I could throw in there. With one glance you see everything you need to know, it's easier to discover weird behavior and you can control multiple channels at the same time. And that goes without being an octopus chameleon or something else. But that's me. Each to their own I guess;)

Oh, and you can do stuff without looking at the screen and just use your ears. Now that's mixing for ya!

Oh stop it for Dog's sake!

You say you're "cutting edge" and "high end" (in another post) yet you mix on bloody Beyerdynamic phones!

Unbelievable. This thread must be one of the all time lows!! Credits to the starter, who galantly sabotaged every effort of making some sense out of this..

One thing that got totally forgotten is (at least I did not see it mentioned) you don't mix with  your eyes, but with your ears, and your fingers have a sense of feel.

And bringing in the touch screen pushed the tractor hopelessly to the bottom of  the ditch. Using touch screens you only have your eyes, because you can't feel if your fingers are on the right sliders, nor how much you've actually moved your finger.
A hardware mixer wins a touch screen no matter how you look at it.

SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre  -  Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc.
The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

I'll happily believe he has the qualifications he says he does. What I don't grasp is why he thinks anyone here should care or be impressed. Lots of people go through higher education. It's really not that remarkable.

You don't fool me, and I suspect you don't fool a lot of the other forum members

What? You suspect he's not a Dr. with several degrees, and a fountain of knowledge all things audio?

Tell me it isn't so................

I'll happily believe he has the qualifications he says he does. What I don't grasp is why he thinks anyone here should care or be impressed. Lots of people go through higher education. It's really not that remarkable.

Exactly! Myself included (not music related though), does it make me important or special? No more so than anyone else. What impresses people more? An amazing live performance of musicians, a beautifully written and performed piece of classical music, or a couple of letters after someone's name?

Albert Einstein: "Imagination is more important than knowledge"

The guy who started Dell was a college dropout.

What's this mean?

Walk > Talk
Action > words
Wisdom in practice trumps head knowledge,
Good ideas, creativity and excellent products of human creative effort trump dry theory

People will appreciate a work of art more than the paint brush that was used
