Thank you so much Warren. :) I sure hope you get back to good health real soon! To anyone still paying attention to this thread, Reece that he doesn't like the cymbals. I'm not sure how to change them though. If you have an idea, I'd love to hear it. Thanks!

in particular I think the cymbals sound "fake" but I don't know how to tell her to fix it because I am not an expert at MIDI orchestration. from my perspective I think it's a problem with the decay of the cymbals or reverb, or a combination of both. they seem to decay too quickly to my ears.

Hmm. I don't know that it's so much a mater of the cymbal sounding fake. After all, these are samples of real cymbals, right? I think it's more a mismatch with the mental image that the cymbal conjures. When it hits, I get gently breaking surf. This kind of wave tends to have a sort of slightly heavy sound, with a long, foamy afterglide to it. But the cymbal is fairly bright and thin, with a short ride. Maybe not the perfect selection for this particular spot. Something a little meatier, with a naturally longer ride might be the ticket. I didn't really notice it before, but now that it's been brought to my attention, I can hear where Reece is coming from. There are hundreds of different cymbals with wildly different characteristics. You know, this is the sort of thing that breeds grey hairs.

That's very nice - good job! Did you do it all in Sonar? Strings too?

This is a very nicely done piece Janet. Great job to all involved. I was expecting something more like reggae music or something but this was a pleasant surprise. Great playing.

Bob...gray hairs...you're right. :( Fortunately, they're mostly in the back so far...and blend in nicely with brown hair. :) Anyway, thanks for those ideas. I'll keep trying other ones. So far they all sorta sound alike to me but maybe I can change the reverb or eq or something. Thanks again! Thank you, Chuck! Thank you, Ruben. Yes, it's all Sonar. I used EWQL strings. Well, if you listened to my mix, that's what you heard. Jonas used something else. Anyway, to me, Ivory (piano) and EWQL are well worth the investment and I know I could have saved a lot of time monkeying around with other stuff before I finally dove in and bought them. Thank you, Steve! :) Thanks, Tim. Yeah, I think most people expected something different. Even I expected something different...but once that opening measure wormed its way into my head I had to go with it or go crazy. Maybe I can still try to write the one I meant to write. But it won't be reggae I imagine. Someone else will have to write that one. :)

Nice work Janet! This is really nice "pictoral" music... this musical work should accompany a video of some sort because it paints a nice picture in itself. I really like the wind-down too... nicely done! Wish I could play piano like that gosh darn it! Kiki

Thank you very much, Kiki. I appreciate that. :) And I with I could play the piano 4 times as well, darn it! :) Thank you, Thal, and you're welcome. :) Reece and Bob--I changed the cymbals. Well, I added more reverb to them. It's a start anyway. Does it help?

that actually sounds a LOT better! I guess it was just the reverb (or lack thereof) causing the problem. well, except maybe now they're a little too loud in the mix? maybe drop them back a little in volume?
