Under the "Deliver" icon here http://www.cakewalk.com/SONAR-X2/ one can read: "NEW! MusicXML export" and "Print Notation".  The MusicXML was already included in the X1 Expanded version.  I'm intrigued about the notation printing addition.  Have they finally upgraded the notation function of Sonar?  Fingers crossed.

Nahhh, totally wishful thinking. And quite frankly, most people could care less about printing sheetmusic in Sonar.

nothing on staff view  :(

Jim- it is almost unbelieavable, but I'm afraid the sad reality. Did you notice the way CW advertises X2 on here http://www.cakewalk.com/SONAR-X2/ ?

absolutely no reference to writing/composing. Music, as some of us grew up learning and practicing it, doesn't seem to be the same anymore. I don't know what to make out of this anymore...................

Under the Deliver section I read this:

"Flexible export options
NEW! Integrated SoundCloud
NEW! MusicXML export
Export Video
Cakewalk Publisher
Print Notation
Burn CDs"

Not sure if this means anything new tho.

Well if it were being sold as writing/composing software I'd guess that it would include a rhyming dictionary...It's being marketed as MUSIC RECORDING and PRODUCTION software.

Ugh... The people who want the updated staff view want it because that is how they input their midi data as opposed to the PRV. These are generally people who have been formally trained in music. It is foolish to dismiss those folks. It has very little to do with producing sheet music. For example I am about to be putting together a bunch of recordings of traditional folk music. For the melody lines instead of slaving away for endless hours learning and then inputting the notes VIA PRV I can just take the original sheet music and input the data directly through the Staff View. It is an important feature and people have a right to express their needs/wants for it.

Well if you're writing music, you're probably writing lyrics too, hence the need for a rhyming dictionary. It's a very helpful tool.

The color table you see is part of the dev kit used to make the clips. It's on the factory side not on the user side. We thought you might like a peak at how we make the cake.

Oh. Pity.

I was going to say - X2 is going to have one HECK of a color editor - !

I agree. We should all aspire to be good enough to express our musical ideas in the same manner as Bach and Beethoven.

I fully expect an update on this in the future.

Define production. music recording, writing, and composing are often all the same process for some kinds of music. A pop music producer for example is recording, producing writing and composing at all once for example. I think this software should take on more of that pov. I personally have always felt Sonar really favored those who work with audio and want to mix and for years I rejected it but now that is exactly what I need it for but I respect that it has a lot of good midi tools too.

I can understand why Cake might let the SV sit as is. Programming and development cost quite a bit of money so maybe they don't see it as being a solid business move. What I DON'T understand is people bashing other users because of their preferences in how they create music. It's very insulting especially when discussing one of the oldest and most standard ways of creating and expressing music.

Stick around for a while most anything negative said about Cakewalk products here is taken as bashing and as someone doesn't know what they are talking about regardless of their experience with other music making tools besides Cakewalk stuff.

Oh I've seen it and even though I mostly stay on the positive side of things as I do really enjoy Sonar I've been on the receiving end of it. It's rather silly especially on what is supposed to be an educational forum.

Well if it were being sold as writing/composing software I'd guess that it would include a rhyming dictionary...It's being marketed as MUSIC RECORDING and PRODUCTION software.
Define production.

Music production... capturing a recording of a performance and translating that to a media that can be shared, such as a record, cd, or mp3. The whole idea of recording started as a way to listen to performances while not actually being there for the live performance. Editing and mastering is there to fine tune the recording in to a finished product. The end result is a cd or mp3 or wav file for video use. That's basic music production.

Now let's define writing music...That's a different topic, putting notes together played on an musical instrument to make a melody, with or without lyrics. This is usually done before the performance and/or recording of it. Most musicians have written their parts before the actual recording of it. Not always, but most of the time. Some musicians will turn on the tape recorder, let it roll, and just start jamming and go back later and pick out the parts they like the most. At this time though, the focus is on the melody, and coming up with a complete song or musical piece.

Now let's define notation...This is another seperate topic, that's the art of writing down on paper, the notes of a musical piece so that it can be communicated to other musicians, so that they all have an idea of what to play. Sort of like a road map of the song for the other musicians.

Sonar is being marketed as recording and music production software. It can also be used in the writing of music as well. It can do a limited notation job as well and can export to a more professional notation software application. Sonar's strong point though is music recording and production to a finished product which can be re-sold to the music buying public.

CD artwork and graphics are a different topic as well, Sonar does none of that.
Marketing of music is a completely different field which Sonar does not do at all, nor does Sonar collect royalties for you. Sonar will not book your live
performances, sell your concert tickets, make your t-shirts, provide concert security or handle your groupies. Sonar will however, help to produce your music.

I only hope that there's *some* enhancement coming down the pike in the near future.   I don't need a total rewrite myself, I'd just like the SV to behave more like the PRV when it comes to snap and duration.

Yes... and the whole triplet thing would be nice.
