Ryan, one word
Ryan, you really must come up with better ideas to stop these people from starting these same threads about X2b, etc. than just telling them to stop or locking the thread. You don't want to waste your time explaining the same things again and again, do you? When there's a problem, there must be a solution, too. All you need to do is rack your brain and find out what the real solution is. I frequently use your tech support, feature request and problem reporter and appreciate the systems very much. And I love X2. I look forward to the next update/version of the great software. Thanks

It's a damned if you do, damned if you don't scenario. I have seen Ryan, Brandon and others attempt to respond to these threads and be greeted by a virtual lynch mob that starts by screaming "no communication" and then moves to " I'm going to get more belligerent with my whining since your response is not what I want to hear". There are very few software products that I have 100 percent satisfaction with, even among my favorite and most reliable programs. Yes, there are things about X2 that annoy me, but overall I am satisfied enough to stick with it. Demanding an X2b repeatedly indicates a sense of entitlement brought on by us taking for granted these official, named bug fix/ feature enhancement releases. Perhaps if Cakewalk just simply released small updates with no fanfare like most companies seem to do, there would not be such an expectation. It's simple to me. If one feels so strongly that Cakewalk is not serving your needs, there are plenty of other products to choose from. To expect any company to magically address every problem of every user to the point of 100% of customers having 100% satisfaction 100% of the time is absurd. This forum is a microcosm of the Cakewalk user world. We have no clue what percentage of actual customers frequent this forum and if they represent the average customer or just simply the average customer who would take the time to post. It's a statistical fact that unsatisfied customers are more likely to make any comment at all regarding a product so I expect this forum to have a higher complaint rate than the general public and I don't have access to a fraction of the user data Cakewalk has. The fact that this forum has quite a few borderline trolls who don't even use X2 or even Sonar among those most vocal about seizing any opportunity to slam Cakewalk. It's not even constructive most of the time. Ryan, seriously...just ignore these kinds of threads. It's a no win situation unless you are prepared to personally kiss the rear of every respondent and pepper the thread with a bunch of lies for the sake of appeasement. Stick to helping people who actually need help. Your time spent repeating yourself is better spent there.

Hello, Thanks for sharing. This maybe would have been better of as a private message, but to share my thoughts with everyone since I'm sort of being called out here ;) (Dubdisciple, you're right. After this I really do need to move on. I hate to say it but things suffer when focusing on replying to difficult subjects like this sometimes.) Help from the community would be nice. By community, I mean the users here who participate regularly and are well aware of the systems we have in place and that we're working on things internally. By help, I mean sharing this knowledge with others. I'm not asking the community to fix issues for us... but sharing with customers how issues can get fixed is helpful for everyone. Tell them about the systems we have in place. I see some members doing this and I love them for it. We do have a lot of incredibly helpful and generous people here. Thank you! You guys know who you are. Unfortunately, many others are not being helpful and are focusing their efforts on threads like what we've been seeing. They're zeroing in on these things that push their agenda to make us look bad in some cases. They don't share how to find help and instead focus on negative topics, many of which are based off hearsay or are the result of major assumptions. I've had to ban some people for doing this. People who weren't even posting publicly, but through private messages to new members trying to sway them to buy other products instead. People I've personally spent a lot of time supporting. I care a lot about what I do, so that's a pretty big stab in the back for genuine effort myself and my colleagues put in. If someone comes in here claiming they want fixes or people fired from Cakewalk without any context of what their experience even is, it would be nice if long-time members wouldn't use this as an opportunity to try to poke holes in everything Cakewalk related (software, business practices, staffing changes, etc.). It would be nice if we'd just try to help out instead... maybe try to remind others that Cakewalk isn't some gigantic corporation and that there are real human beings behind the scenes working long hours to make what we believe to be one of the best products on the market for an extremely fair cost. The folks that constantly try to poke holes are most like either worried about our future, or are trying to hurt our future. I can't see it any other way. If you're legitimately concerned, don't worry, we're not new to this. We've been here for quite some time, we have a game plan, and SONAR isn't going anywhere but up. In personal interactions I have with customers, people often times tell me I brought them back from the edge right when they were about to give up on SONAR. I'm not doing anything special, I'm just helping answer questions about what I've learned about troubleshooting computers over the years and how to get music software to achieve what you're looking to do. Sometimes the solutions are so easy (a single setting) that I'm amazed people were ready to move on. I get this same type of response at Berklee where students tell me they're fed up with Logic, Pro Tools, Digital Performer. Maybe I personally just have a lot of patience. What I'm getting at, is it's so much more helpful to just work through problems together versus treating it like "Company X needs to fix issue Y". Yes, companies do need to fix issues and make better products, but it's a lot easier to achieve those results with professionalism and not by trying to bring that company down directly on their own website. Anyhow, quite frankly I think we have some people that should know a little better at this stage in the game. They repeat these habits every year and push the envelope. It forces us to lock threads despite giving second, third, fourth... fiftieth chances in some cases. I don't personally understand visiting the forum every day and focusing on trying to hurt the company you're asking for better products from. It's completely counterproductive. This is why I keep requesting people work with us versus against us. Anyhow, it's impossible to address human behavior. Many might read these words and agree, many will not. I'll probably receive some private messages telling me I'm missing the point or something similar. If anyone is worried about me missing the point, I guess what I'd like to say is this: I'm not. I see a lot of legitimate concerns as well and am thankful that people share what they think needs to be improved upon. The only solution to the big tickets at the moment is time. We're working on some things internally that are going to address a lot of the feedback we've been getting throughout this entire release, the things we agree on with customers that are important. Obviously I can't announce what those plans are yet, but I will be excited when Cakewalk shares the news about some of the future enhancements to SONAR and other products. One of the things I saw recently caused the entire company to applaud and applaud loudly. I think it's the first time I've seen that at Cakewalk. Usually we're all very focused on what we're doing and to be honest it's hard to impress people who are extremely critical of their own work... so to see people loosen up for a moment with genuinely major smiles on their faces was a breath of fresh air. Thanks for the message by the way. I'm looking forward to interacting with you guys again when we have some announcements.

I'm well aware of the systems in place, my comment that you quoted before locking the thread was referring to user requests asking for some transparency about known bugs that cakewalk sea shy about sharing. The sarcasm reflects my frustration. That is, we the users tell you cakewalk of the bugs we find but you cakewalk don't reciprocate with similar information. We're asking for the bugs you know about and you told us aboutthe mmultiple systems you have for managing those bugs...

That is precisely what this form is for: http://www.cakewalk.com/support/contact/problemreport.aspx For finding out if what you're experiencing is a bug or not and getting official confirmation from Cakewalk about it. This is a topic I spoke at in depth in one of the many threads I'm referencing, just a few weeks ago. It probably got buried, but it was here: http://forum.cakewalk.com/FindPost/2853144

I feel the need to clarify, the point of the form isn't to waste anyone's time. It's to get customers in contact with staff who have the tools and skills to assist with identifying bugs in the application. It needs to be done via this manner, not via conversations on the forum where anything goes.

That's not how the system works. These reports often times have sensitive information (personal information from customers). We're not about to expose them to the world. The link to my previous post elaborates on what you're asking. Please take a moment to read my posts before replying. This is what made me suggest you didn't read my post in the other thread as well. In addition, obsessing over the reports is not going to be helpful for yourself or anyone in the end. A lot of the bugs aren't bugs. A lot of the ones that are, are extremely specific to certain conditions.

That means they've been automatically updated by our system. There's nothing wrong with that, it's a tool used for us to identify where reports have moved around. More information on the fault reporter in my other post on the thread you were on.

Ryan, thanks for stopping by. And yea, it can be hard on these forums. I have no problem w/ people venting - it is a user forum, so they paid for their slot. I have no problem w/ the more professional users pointing out actual problems w/ the product, exchanging solutions, work arounds or baying at the Cakewalk moon to fix a bug. And newbies - well, we've all been there and there is a lot to digest - and help them with. Helpful solutions are ... helpful. But I have less patience w/ those that want SONAR to be tailored for their method of work, or the last 100 threads about X3 or why doesn't Ryan hold my hand when their is a question (nothing personal, Ryan). We all know there are those that want staff view despite the fact that Cakewalk seems disinterested. I would have prefered P5 to be the next SONAR X, but guess what, Cakewalk didn't follow my suggestion - or those of the other P5 users. They took the Inspector and a few other tricks and incorporated them into the older code of SONAR. Foolish, in my view, but guess what - I don't think at this point Cake is going to do that. There are plenty of problems w/ SONAR X2. Pointing them out and complaining is perfectly fine, but I'd rather have Ryan etc. working on solutions rather than coming here to answer the same old tired questions - or not answering them as the case ususally is. @

I must admit, as a long time professional Cakewalk user, a lot of the complaint threads I read on here are downright childish. I have gained a plethora of information here over the years, but the forum continues to harbour more and more chronic whining about the silliest "bugs". Granted, there are a few things that could use refining, but to the point of demanding results? Seriously, Sonar X2a is NOT that bad. I can honestly say that because it has been rock solid for me (despite a few minor gripes, but they in no way affect performance). If you don't like Sonar, switch over to another DAW and be done with it. And trust me, the grass isn't any greener (I also use Pro Tools, Cubase and Logic and they have thier own demons). Perhaps a lot of these so called "bugs" are system specific issues that are non Sonar related? I don't know. But I can also tell you that I've never been sluffed off by a support ticket....the staff has always communicated until an issue is resolved. So to the Cakewalk staff, keep up the good work!! I know the Bakers are hard at work, and improvements will be developed as usual. Sorry, had to get that off my chest

Ryan, Sorry if this is merely a sore subject for you guys, but I think the question, " Where can we see the list of reported problems pls?" should have been worded, "Do you have a list of known bugs?" No personal information, just something like a "Caveat" list or Unresolved list. I know it doesn't necessarily look too "good" sitting there in open air on the website, but having these issues listed with either workarounds, or "in review" etc. could help mitigate the number of support calls you guys could get for the same exact bug. If a user calls in for support with a potential bug, followed by 3 or 4 more users calling in, at some point, you'll determine the issue is more widespread. But even one issue could be justified as a bug. I'm sure you guys have an internal list of known bugs, and ones intended to be fixed. What I think lawp is really looking for is the same thing I am: A list of known bugs/issues to be addressed, so that A) We all don't call in and waste agent minutes to troubleshoot a known issue, or B) We can determine if a potential bug we found isn't already listed but should be reported. Perhaps someone like me *thought* the issue was reported, but the submitted report failed for whatever reason, or, in my case, I couldn't provide enough details to perfectly recreate the issue every time. Only replicated bugs need to be listed, and/or only those that Cakewalk intend to fix. This way, if more people are seeing an issue, but it has been dismissed by Cakewalk as unreproducible, it can be absent from the list, and others who need to report it might be more helpful to do so to help justify further investigation. Does that help any? Having such a list doesn't present a failure, but rather that Cakewalk is proactive in acknowledging such issues, and this shows good intent on the company. It also doesn't give a competitor any information they may be able to find on their own using their own tests. It sounds like a sensitive information fear, but some of the largest companies who stand to lose billions from competition do this. Albeit, this also plays heavily into incremental updates (rather, small patches), but maybe that's something coming in X3, perhaps. Anyway, I'm hoping maybe this has been discussed internally. I believe it would help calm down some of the Forum Fury. Thanks!

Thanks Brian, I touched upon that briefly here: http://forum.cakewalk.com/FindPost/2853144 I think the key is doing it the right way, something that is going to take some careful design on if we ever went that route. Trust me, a lot of the reports that come in you'd be frustrated seeing because a lot of them are extremely hard to decipher. I don't think the solution is allowing the public to see "problem reports", but more so allowing the public to know about big issues in an accessible way. This is typically what we use the Knowledge Base for actually. Identifying and reporting issues people need to be aware of. Here's the specific knowledge base for SONAR X2: http://www.cakewalk.com/Support/product.aspx/SONAR-X2 . Personally, I think a searchable, taggable, manageable knowledge base is much more effective than gigantic lists in forums. Another effort that hasn't trickled down to the SONAR user base yet is something we did for Music Creator 6 Touch. Traditionally, the Read Me files have always been offline which means they only contain relevant information at the time of release. With MC6T, I worked with our devs to add a menu function directly into the program. It's Help > View ReadMe File. My copy of MC6T for example, takes me here: http://www.cakewalk.com/support/readme/musiccreator/6.5/readme.aspx?PID=CWMC650&LID=3&Version=6.5 The cool thing about this is it allows us to always keep it active if users start reporting issues we think are important to include in the Read Me. This shortcut will make it's way into SONAR as well and we'll keep it updated and relevant. If there's something significant we feel SONAR users need to know about, we'll put it there definitely. There are some other ideas floating around that we might introduce at some point that could be helpful to the community as a whole, but that's a bit further off in the future.

What bothers me is that CW has to deal with those that seem to want to shut down CW. Yet true requests for real improvements have to get sidetracked just to answer the ones that have a nasty agenda. How much effort is being spent to track down the ones that want to hurt CW? I must say I am depressed to hear that anyone would PM to advise people to switch DAWs. We don't need the membership to become actively involved in policing the forum but I think we do need to be a little more on guard.

I think what were seeing more and more of lately is when someone starts a thread "unusable" im seeing a lot of the same users joining in on those threads and it turns in to a huge pile on. there some good people who reply to those threads with real concerns, but then there are those same people over and over again. it wouldn't hurt to just walk away once in a while. there are plenty of yahoo's out there that use other DAW's that come here just to mess around with people here. try not to get caught up in that. And Ryan and others from CW have stated and re-stated these processes to cretins who keep on posting the same sh#@t all the time. They (Ryan et al) cannot give these people ANY answer they will be content with so I reckon it is better to just let them have at it. The rest of us know who they are so why not simply put them on ignore and when they start to realise they get no attention to these puerile posts ( remind anyone of a certain age group ) they will get bored and go and play in the sandpit instead, which will ultimately benefit us all. I take my hat off to all the staff at CW who must have the patience of the Saints. To Ryan and Brandon and others, please just ignore these people, don't worry, I am sure the rest of us will not think any less of you, you really are on a hiding to nothing by even attempting to try and explain anything to them. I for one appreciate everything you guys write about, whenever you get the time to do so I don't post a lot here, but I have been using Cakewalk since version 5 (pre-audio days) and it has never let me down - EVER! Ryan, The Readme direction is definitely a good start. For example, we've seen the crashing issue with Waves plug-ins used with Sonar where Sonar can "see" both 32 and 64-bit plug-ins, but there have been crashes as a result. Waves had the solution that worked for me, and Cakewalk had a suggestion to take as well, but having directions like this in an online Readme would have saved even me extended frustration earlier on. That's more in line of what I mean. A list of re-worded, but articulated bugs that others can see in a Readme is perfect. That's about all I could personally ask for. Thanks!

I agree there's a lot of unproductive negativity and folks going to paranoid extremes about the future of the company, but I will also say that this is the longest I remember waiting for a Sonar update (we had 4 updates at this point relative to the release of X1) and for a number of months there had been next-to-no Cakewalk presence on the forum. I'm grateful that Ryan and others have been stopping by more frequently lately. We got pretty spoiled with Brandon and Seth and I think the absence concerned people - especially after Seth was so abruptly let go. I can't speak for others, but my own frustration with the present lack of an X2b comes out of my love for the product (I feel like it's almost there), not a disdain for those who create it.

this is the longest I remember waiting for a Sonar update (we had 4 updates at this point relative to the release of X1) You're right of course - but this does also stem from the fact the the X1 release was significantly less mature than the X2 release, even my system didn't become anything like stable until X1c - I was working in 8.5.3 until the c release - working with X1a & b almost had me in tears of frustration when trying to do some very simple tasks. X2, for an awful lot of users, has simply worked right out of the box [download] and this is because X2 is a refinement and augmentation of the existing X1 code, whereas a lot of X1 was freshly written and not tested with the user base.

Bristol_Jonesey You're right of course - but this does also stem from the fact the the X1 release was significantly less mature than the X2 release, even my system didn't become anything like stable until X1c - I was working in 8.5.3 until the c release - working with X1a & b almost had me in tears of frustration when trying to do some very simple tasks. X2, for an awful lot of users, has simply worked right out of the box [download] and this is because X2 is a refinement and augmentation of the existing X1 code, whereas a lot of X1 was freshly written and not tested with the user base.
Agreed. X1 was much less solid than X2 upon initial release. I didn't use it regularly till X1c either. I'm not among the crowd who refers to X2 as unusable. I use it every day and happily so. I'm just itching for the kinks to get ironed out.

Mr. Munnis maybe try to remind others that Cakewalk isn't some gigantic corporation and that there are real human beings behind the scenes working long hours to make what we believe to be one of the best products on the market for an extremely fair cost. +1 Chuckebaby I wish everyone here happiness and joy. +1 I would add that my purpose for participating in the forum isn't just to get personal fixes. I put my oar in and try to help some folks so I can rub elbows with the serious talent in town. I'm grateful for all I've learned here, both when I was actively trying to solve my own problem or when I was trying to solve someone else's problem.

As a complete newcomer to Sonar, I've been uneasy when I hear about bugs that have been present for years. I've also noticed a total lack of acknowledgement about the existence of theses bugs by Cakewalk representatives (the latest batch of threads like this one are proof of this). I love this forum, I think I like Sonar's functionality (but I'm still low in the learning curve and fear hitting issues when I get around to doing serious work), but I don't understand a software company that doesn't get around to fixing obvious bugs even years later. I've worked in software development and I'd want to clean things up once in a while before going forward. Either fix the bug or cut out the function.

Paul unless the poster lists exactly what bug/s they are talking about the notion that bugs have been in Sonar and are still there is not creditable. Keep in mind that X1 and X2 were rewritten. For example take lanes v layers many view the differences as bugs. Its easy to toss out unproved allegations and get away with it. I'm not saying that X2 is bug free. I am saying that a lot of what is said is either exaggerated or is knowingly wrong. Believe it or not there are people with a very nasty agenda.

Paul..don't confuse the refusal to respond to strawman type arguments with lack of acknowledgement. Many of the complaints are not so much about bugs but the inevitable differences that occur from everyone having different configurations and skill levels. Then there's the badgering they recieve when they do respond. Imagine volunteering to man a 24 hour complaint line for a company when it's not your job and being told you don't care because you are not subjecting yourself to enough abuse? No matter how Ryan answers either the op will come back with a rebuttal and/or a line of others will gang up on him with more and sometimes unrelated issues.

I appreciate the input from the "company people." I'm a user of Cakewalk software from the last century (literally), and now that it's finally time for me to upgrade my system, it is personal interaction like Ryan's and others' that help reaffirm my decision to stay with Cakewalk. Being a new guy here, imagine my surprise when the CTO himself responded to my question about software optimization.
Not sure where I'm going with this, but I just want to say thanks to the Cakewalk people for their personal interaction on this forum. It's not like I can just call tech support or product development just to say "thanks for being there!" So I'll just say it here. Thanks guys. rock on.

John What bothers me is that CW has to deal with those that seem to want to shut down CW. Yet true requests for real improvements have to get sidetracked just to answer the ones that have a nasty agenda. How much effort is being spent to track down the ones that want to hurt CW?
I'm sorry, but I don't buy this at all John - it doesn't make any sense. Why would anyone, who lays out hundreds of dollars/pounds for a software product, then want to "hurt" the company that made it, or want them to "shut down"? Unless, of course (and this is the 400lb gorilla in the room) they are dissatisfied with the product, and/or they get the feeling that nothing is being done to address their issues. Who are these people? I've seen quite a few guys expressing genuine concerns about SONAR, but they're not criticising Cakewalk and their products on a whim. Or for a bit of mindless fun, if you will. If, as has already been mentioned, they have not followed the correct/official procedure for reporting bugs and/or contacting technical support, then they should receive little sympathy. But most of the people who have been critical have followed these procedures - to the letter. They end up being so frustrated when they perceive that nothing is being done (or can be done, short of an update) that I believe their venting is justified to some extent. Sure, if there are spies in the camp from other DAWs who are deliberately spreading malicious falsehoods then yes, weed them out and send them packing. But I know for a fact there are a couple of guys - one specifically who got banned for what he said in a Private Message (some "Privacy" eh?) - who all they ever wanted was for the software they paid for to work for them. John I must say I am depressed to hear that anyone would PM to advise people to switch DAWs. We don't need the membership to become actively involved in policing the forum but I think we do need to be a little more on guard.
I thought Private Messages were er..... 'Private'? And yes, I fully realise that the PM system is a privilege of this forum - but what next, is somebody going to get banned because someone reports the contents of an email they get sent? That's a slippery slope for sure.

This is directed at nobody in particular, whatsoever. I would like to see the level of energy taken to post so much negativity and nonsense in some of the posts that are out there channeled into HELPING folks - helping each other. WE are our best and most available resource for learning to work with the software, and balancing all of the pieces of hardware and other software that goes with it. Please, let's collectively be adults, and interact in a civil and supportive manner, toward the common goal of using whatever tools we individually have to make/produce music. Bob Bone

What I don't get is people who haven't used Sonar for years popping up here and talking about their new DAW and how they wish they had switched years ago. Everyone knows who I'm talking about- the Logic guy, the Studio One guys , the Cubase guys. It's tragic.
