Export Sustain?
I seem to remember somewhere we have a setting that allows us to set a time value as to how long to process sound after the last audio plays for example to allow for the delay or reverb tail to finish... I can't seem to find it? Can anyone point me in the right direction? I hate having to specify the time ruler setting everytime I do an export... Thanks... Keni

Audio will render to the end of the selection; just extend the selected time range.

You can also extend the end of a clip to where you want the file, or song, to end.

The setting to allow reverb tails to finish playing is in Preferences Audio somewhere but it's a checkbox not a time value.

Hi Keni In the preferences you have Audio/playback and recording/ you have a fade option for beginning and end of the song that you can set the milliseconds you want to fade at the end of the song. Maybe this will help.

I usually just drag the end of another clip to wherever I want the cut off point to be.

The first thing I do before starting a final mix is determine (by listening) exactly where I want playback/export to stop, and drop a marker there named "End". I also place one where I want the song to begin and label it "Start". If necessary, I slip-edit a track (any track) to make sure playback doesn't stop before the End marker. Then, before exporting, I press CTL-A to select all tracks, jump to the Start marker and press F9, jump to the End marker and press F10. This method assures that reverb tails and fadeouts aren't truncated, that no external trimming will be needed, and that every export will produce identical results.

Thanks everybody...
Though nobody mentioned the option I distinctly remember... I've used all of the above at various times but as a default, I was usually able to do the export without having to set anything... It would default to the 1:01 for the start and finish as many seconds beyond the last event as I had set...
So if none of you (who are well more versed in Sonar than I) know of it, it must be a thing of the past... Lost recently as I had been using the default for so long....
Thanks for all the reminders and ideas... Bitflipper... I totally forgot the from/to shortcut, that will be handy...
I'll still look for the setting I was referring to and post if/when I find it...

Hi Dan... I haven't looked at the link yet, but I just realized that the setting I was thinking of is for the Freeze options... Not related to export... So I guess I've been lucky having either an extended envelope or hidden track or such that allowed the export's time range to default longer than I needed.... I don't typically set such at mix time as I like to do my fades and such during mastering... tho sometimes I must do some fading in the original mix of course... In Freeze Options we have a checkbox and related value box for Freeze Tail Duration.... But I guess as long as I remember to set a start and end point, I can use the F9/F10 (Thanks bf) and quickly establish the time range... ...bit of a pain as I must also select the tracks... not a big deal, but I have so often simply been able to allow a default range/track selection and do my exports... I kept thinking of this Freeze option thinking it might be related to export as I've recently had a few songs that forced me to create the export setting... ;-) Thanks Everybody... Keni

Hi bitflipper... I forgot that X remaps those commands (F9/F10) to tool selections... I can't remember the "name" of those tools so I'm having some trouble locating them in X3 (if they still exist???)... Could you please tell me the official name of those shortcuts? I haven't used 8.5.3 for much since X2 or so... Thanks... Keni

Just one of the reasons I still run 8.5 - didn't like the randomized keyboard shortcuts that have been standard since Cakewalk for DOS 1.0.

I'm with you on this, but in their defense, they're not randomized, but grouped differently... I just opened 8.5.3 and found that F9/F10 are not assigned by default... So you may have long ago assigned them yourself? Could you please check to see which commands they are mapped to? Good chance I can assign them to some keys here... Thanks... Keni

In X1 they didn't just change those keys, they re-assigned them to new functions. That was a WTF moment. My understanding, though, is that there is a simple way to restore the classic keybindings. Look in the Keybindings section in Preferences for an Import function. I've uninstalled X1 and never bothered trying X2 or X3, so I'm just remembering from 2 years ago (hopefully not a wishful-thinking false memory).

F9 > Edit | Select | From = Now F10 > Edit | Select| Thru = Now These were default accelerator assignments in all versions before X1. I re-assigned them right away in X1. Just search on "now" in Global bindings, and these options will be the first two listed. You'll probably also want to re-assign: Ctrl+F9 > Edit | Select | From = Start Ctrl+F10 > Edit | Select| Thru = End and F7 > Go to From F8 > Go to Thru

Thanks bf & bf! I'm not sure about re-assigning the F7/F8, but I did just assign the Ctrl-F9/F10 series to the select from/thru... that should make my life a little easier... Much thanks! Keni
