You have to have 2 gigs to get Sonar? How bloody expensive is it? I'm working flat out as it is!

Re: HELP Enquired! I Need Ram Memory! 2014/05/15 08:34:52 (permalink)
I have a Dell Studio XPS 435MT, i7 920. I really love my machine and figured that I would upgrade the RAM from 6GB to 24GB. Loaded the RAM fine, BIOS says 24GB, ran the BIOS diagnostics with no issues. CPUZ tells me 24GB Triple channel memory. However, WIN7 Home Premuim list 16GB. Do I need to do something with WIN7 to get it to see 24GB?

Answered my own question.... The wonderful folks in Redmond (Microsoft) restrict Win7 64 Home Premium to 16G of RAM. I guess I'll have to upgrade!

I want to get more RAM memory!. I have 6 GB and need to know how much a reasonable CH Practitioner would need to properly run Sonar X-3. Please help for as you all know I need all the help I can get!

Are you having any issues with the 6GB's of RAM you have? Running a lot of softsynths or HUGE amount of plugs in your mixes?

I spoke with Dell and they told me I have to replace all the 6 single RAM modules with 6 two GB modules. They said I can't combine 3 single RAM modules I already have with say 3 two GB modules. This is pretty confusing to me

Well, if you have six slots you've got more potential than most (every MB I've had only had four slots).  I'm surprised that you can't mix one's and two's - at least in pairs - but maybe Dell just wants you to spend more money than you need to.  Heck, you should be able to pull out those six singles and replace them with two 4 GB sticks leaving the other slots available for further upgrades.

Motherboards vary, so I'd take it somewhere where knowledgeable geeks can check it out (bring your motherboard manual if you still have it - if you don't, you might be able to find an online version).

Yeah, that Dell does seem to have 6 slots for RAM, but you can install 3 matched sticks in slots 1,2,3 (white) and another matched sticks in slots 4,5,6 (black). So you can go with three matched 4GB sticks in slots 1,2,3 AND with three 2GB sticks in slots 4,5,6 (per the Manual).

They do state in NOT using or mixing any original memory sticks with the new ones as the PC may not start properly.

Seems like the Dell guys are only interested in selling me stuff. I kept bringing up my RAM upgrade and they kept talking about selling me something. They did say I need to buy from them to get the proper part. The RAM they sell is more expensive. I'm through talking to them.

Thanks for the info guys. I hurt my back a couple of days ago so I'm having problems getting around. Me having to take pain pills and muscle relaxers keeps me more confused than usual. I'll keep at it though.

Sorry to hear about your back pain Bill......get that fixed before anything else.
Yeah, I'm not surprised at Dell and the sales pitch. If you use with RAM that's compatible with your sytem, it's a very simple upgrade.

As MM pointed out (), this RAM is compatible with your sys: DDR3, 1066MHz PC3-8500/1333MHz PC3-10600, 1.5v, unbuffered........and you can go upto 24GB's of RAM (6x4GB sticks) if your version of Win7 permits it.

Get some rest first. :)

Thinking for me is dangerous. As I lay here counting cracks in the ceiling I remember that my PC is 5 years old. Maybe I should just get a new one. What would be the best PC to buy? I don't want touch tech PC 's with Win 8. I'm old and set in my ways. I want a regular desk top PC. How much can I afford? Let's say $1500. Is Packard still in business? I know Dell is.

you maybe could add a third for VST libraries  after the memory upgrad or change out the C drive for a SSD drive

You can get a pretty good PC for $1500. The only problem with "off the shelf" stuff is they generally use cheaper products on their builds and also include a lot of bloatware.

For just a little more than that ($400), I built my gaming/DAW machine last june......I got a fairly good graphics card (for gaming) + a new  monitor which boosted up the price to about $1900. The good thing about putting a PC together is YOU get to choose all the (quality) parts that YOU want, and not settle for a standardized unit with inferior parts.

Of course, if you don't like to put it together, you can always contact Jim Roseberry or Scott from ADK and see what they can do for your budget. You'll have a peace of mind that it's done properly AND suited to your needs.

Since my PC is getting old like me I decided to go with 6 two GB for 12 GB total. I figure I have a few years on this PC. and if I need to spend any more money I'll get a new PC. 12 GB should be fine

My PC tried to upgrade my memory, but it wasn't compatible with me. Now, I beep loudly when I wake up.

At least, that's what I'm told. I don't remember it, though.
