IMHO Melody is king. Learning as many as possible teaches you everything. How many melodies do you know? How many ways can you play one?  Listening to you play a blazing Govan solo will bore your girl but performing a heartfelt melody can put her between you and that guitar and on the way to paradise. Having that skill can and will do the same with a crowd

don't assume every chick is dumb
or cannot recognize high level melody
other than a simple country tune

i guess what i was trying to say, is that someone like guthrie operates at such a high level, what casual listeners would deem as just 'shredding' is actually his extremely high level take on melody.

i try to play nothing but melodies...
but i'm sure to some folks, they hear scale practice.

i'm still  trying to wrap my head around some of john coltrane's melodies, some of them take a real long time to develop, and even i do not have the patience to get there some times....

Pretty much there are tons of youtube videos out there on speed guitar some of which are from well known artists. Most of them tell you the same types of speed exercises though like hammer on/pull off exercises, boring scales with a metronome, etc.. However, one thing nobody mentions that works great is to pick a few of your favorite songs and play along with them, but don't work on matching the instrumentals but match the vocals. This will help give your techniques a bit of speed and improve phrasing so you don't sound like a note spewing robot. Also, you may want to listen and practice to violin music, again excellent for technique and speed. Stay away from taking lessons from drummers who converted over to guitar, drums are a bit two dimensional and those habits are difficult to break. If all else fails, grow your hair long, put on some overly tight fitting leather pants and turn up the distortion.....
