Upcoming New Start Screen - thinking...[Good Answer!]

Hi Gang...

I just saw the new start screen coming this month...

It looks very interesting and I won't really know if it's good for me until I actually get to work with it...

I'm just wondering and hoping the Bakers were wise enough to allow it to be bypassed...?

Anyone have more info on this?

One mouse click ought to bypass it.

Just like the close button bypasses the existing start screen.

Or did you mean something else?

Looks like the bakers have put some nice thought into this and it will serve a purpose for some. For me I'll bypass it instantly. I always start from double clicking a next revision (a copy) of a file, since I work off of fresh versions of files and never start from an existing file or template from the Sonar icon.

I work off of new versions since I know I can creatively go down a wrong path and I can easily go back to a previous point in a song development. Or, if there is an unexpected event like a crash I can always get back to a reasonable previous version without losing much work.

Two internal 2TB SSDs laptop stuffed with Larry's deals and awesome tools. Studio One is the cat's meow as a DAW now that I've migrated off of Sonar. Using BandLab Cakewalk just to grab old files when migrating songs.

Re: Upcoming New Start Screen - thinking... 2015/08/22 13:24:48 (permalink)
I'd imagine it could totally be hidden (like the current one) but even still it would be easy enough to bypass by just using the Global File > Open menu.

Actually there has been a recent development on my system regarding the old Startscreen which has been annoying. I used to always rely on the "Recent Projects" option to get at whatever I've been working on. Recently I switched my main projects folder to be on the E drive. I am not 100% sure that was the cause but the result is now my "Recent Projects" option actually only goes up to the PREVIOUS saved version (penultimate) instead of the one I actually saved last. I have had to resort to using the Open Project option either in the Start Screen or via the Global File Menu. Hoping the new startscreen will resolve this little quirk.

Good news that I've gleaned from discussions about this here on the forum (and maybe this has already been implemented and not related to the new starscreen) is that we will be able to open a project without defining a folder location. So we won't have to type in a project name/path when we open a new project. This is great for a weirdo tester/noodler like me. Sometimes I get a bug in my brain and want to try something without setting up a project. I just want to open Sonar, go nuts and then kill the project (and have no trace of it on the drives). Currently I have to keep "test" projects to load up for those impromptu spazzouts but usually I end up futzing around with however I set them up previously and it sucks the life out of my moment of inspiration.

So yeah... just being able to get in and get out at the drop of a fart will be cool. Of course if the farts have some artistic merit a simple Save As would turn into an actual new project.

IDK... there are ways to do this already but I just like the idea of "PLOOF" it's open and I can futz a bit and jam without getting distracted by the Create Project crap which is a mood killer.

Cheers.

No, I mean bypass it as I do the current start screen... I disable that immediately as it is always an extra thought... I find it more comfortable to open Sonar to a blank wallpaper...

But the new start screen sounds interesting and may be better for me. I don't know yet but I'm hoping there is a way to bypass it just in case... ;-)

Interesting yes... But I typically have too many projects to see them easily... And constantly re-selecting which to be available seems like a lot of extra work...

But I do have a large screen at high resolution, so we will see...

Re: Upcoming New Start Screen - thinking... 2015/08/22 14:54:24 (permalink)
I probably have 30 or more ongoing project folders at any given time.

Some of them are parent folders to collections of an album project or client projects...

This makes for a large listing and the only way I'm comfortable dealing with it is alphabetically. So I prefer to see a simple list of projects...

But sometimes while continuing work on a project it might be handy as the current recent projects list for fast access...

But that's why I'm interested in the existence of a default bypass so it will depend on the nature of my current need for Sonar...

I'm not condemning it or anything, it may be wonderful... I'm just thinking out loud... ;-)

You can continue to get to the classic file open dialog from the start screen by clicking the "Existing project" button or you can disable it altogether if you don't wish to use it.
However its a huge upgrade from the old quickstart with some modern features like pinning of your most frequently accessed projects, templates, tutorial videos and tips. It also has a connected notification center where you will get up to date information on SONAR and other connected products that you own. No need to check email or the web for your monthly updates anymore.

I love this hugely... great job... another user commenting on the youtube vid suggested adding: "Recover last autosave"... that would be a nice addition down the line... if easy to implement!  If it takes away from an "arrange" window, forget it!

All in all, I think this is a great start screen and would use it immediately... gives all options I routinely switch between in one nice start screen... beautiful...

Thanks Noel...

I'm looking forward to checking it out... Just thinking ahead brought me to wonder about default bypass. Thanks for answering that. It does look very nice but I'm sure you understand the concerns/issues I mention earlier in this thread...

As to the update status? That's a nice addition as well for those who are always connected with a fast enough connection to make it invisible... Sadly that's not me these days... I have to download manually then add it to CCC for install and maintaining update status... I hope one day this will change so that I can enjoy the modern world! ;-)

Have a great weekend!

Thanks again...

Yes this is already here, with the ability to select sample rate etc for the project.

It looks like an improvement to me.  Even after using Sonar for 4 years (most projects start as a copy of another project, so I don't use the start screen much) I still get momentarily confused by the old start screen.  It seems like I always try to click on an inert object.

It's fine and an improvement, but I'm fairly non plussed it worked fine before sorry.

There were better things to do in my view. Drum maps UI doesn't work very well, clean audio folder does not work at all, obvious improvements and bug fixes needed with takelanes and other areas of major functionality. Most of it has been discussed to death in these forums. I wasn't seeing anybody writing 'hey we really need the start menu dialogue to be improved', I didn't see a single post or feature request (maybe there was one). In fact with recent new functionality over the last 4 months I haven't seen anybody ask for what is being delivered. The upcoming audio engine enhancements coming up is what some have been asking for however.

Just being honest, it's a nice enhancement regardless, it just isn't improving my workflow much. I suspect touch screen users will benefit more. Also it would have been nice to see some more color (heaven forbid metro style), I'll stop right here because I know that may end up being a controversial point.

You are right, of course.  There will always be substantive details that seem to deserve more resources than something like this.  However, there is a certain matter of polish.  That start screen does make a first impression to new users, and we all benefit if new users have a better experience and put their money into the development pot.  That's the big picture I think.

There were better things to do in my view. Drum maps UI doesn't work very well, clean audio folder does not work at all, obvious improvements and bug fixes needed with takelanes and other areas of major functionality.

You are right, of course.  There will always be substantive details that seem to deserve more resources than something like this.  However, there is a certain matter of polish.  That start screen does make a first impression to new users, and we all benefit if new users have a better experience and put their money into the development pot.  That's the big picture I think.

Even if the new start screen appealed to potential users, if they find bugs in basic areas such TV and PRV, they probably won't buy the software. Actually, I've heard that the demo version doesn't even allow the user to save projects. At that point many will probably just forget Sonar and try some other daw.

That's quite common behavior for demo versions (e.g., Ableton Live and Studio One Pro won't save projects; Reason won't let you open projects or export to audio). The other usual limitations are full feature but time-limited, or something annoying (random white noise bursts or silence, having to restart every 30 minutes, or whatever).
