Windows 10 - I Was Afraid of This

I came home from out of town and my studio PC had a big blue Welcome to Windows 10 screen.  There was not way to back out of it. First of all, is that normal?

The issue is that I now have NO AUDIO.  All audio runs through my VS-700 interface.  I have no idea how Sweetwater set that up years ago, or where to go to fix it.  But I have no audio, even when trying to play an MP3.

What should I do? (I kept declining the offers to upgrade to W10 because I thought it would screw up my studio..)

More info: I went into the VS-700 IO Editor to see if I could see how to set things up.  I just got a message that said that there may be a connection problem.

I'd be OK with going back to how things were before if I could.

the VS700 is not supported in windows 10.
your going to have to try and find a way to roll back.
I will let some other VS700 users chime in because there might be a hitch.
someway to get around it, but I don't think there is.

see this
http://forum.cakewalk.com/Bye-Bye-VS700-Console-with-Windows-10-m3275075.aspx
you might be able to use Mackie protocol but I think that's only for the surface, not the IO unti itself.
but I could be wrong.

You should have 30 days to revert back from Windows 10 if that is what you want to do.

"To access this, open the Start menu and select Settings. Click the “Update & security” icon and select “Recovery.” You should see a “Go back to Windows 7” or “Go back to Windows 8.1” option. Click the Get started button to get rid of your Windows 10 install and restore your previous Windows install."

that's why I had uninstalled and blocked that one particular win7 update that constantly reminds you of installing win10.

meanwhile I have read quite a few positive posts from users that managed to get the VS-700 up and running in win10 (see links mentioned above) that I consider giving an update a chance (when I can effort to spend hours messing with the system update and check everything).

anyway, since win10 is on your DAW now, you might as well give it a try and see if you can get the VS-700 up and running and stick with it - if not there should still be the rollback option

You can go off line.  I have a dual boot, Win 10 and Win 7.  Win 10 is my "operational" OS but I keep Win 7 for one specific application (transfer patterns to my wife's embroidery machine) that will only run on Win 7 or earlier.  I have the NIC (Ethernet controller) disabled in Win 7 so I'm not on line and thus won't get any Windows updates that could force a Win 10 upgrade.

From what you describe, you don't currently have a backup image file of the current OS install.
That would be one of the first things I'd do...
You always have a means of quickly/easily getting back to a properly functioning DAW.

Once you've got your backup image file, there's no worry about installing Win10.
You can get Win10 to work (just going to take a little extra time/effort for the VS-700).
If you get into a bind, you can always reload your backup image file.

This also happened to me the other day. I was playing a game and Windows kept minimizing the game. I didn't pay any attention what was going on in the background. I was just pissed that it kept happening. Anyways, when I went to shut down I noticed Windows 10 had been downloaded and the computer was waiting to restart to start installing. I was like WTF. I think what I did was not agreeing to the terms and it rolled back whatever it had done in the background and said Windows 10 failed to install. I'm like thanks!

...how do I block another forced upgrade?

I use a little program called "GWX Control Panel".  It's free and seems to work well for me.  There are some Youtube videos out there so you can see how it works.  Here's one example:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=itdMq-H4MbM

And the program can be downloaded here:

Edit: sorry... the links I posted didn't show up.  I must be doing something wrong (I just copied and pasted them).  I any case, it's fairly easy to find.

Edit #2: Links showed up this time.

So far what I've seen of Windows 10 it looks pretty nice. But there is a part of me that thinks nothing is free. I thought I recently saw that one of the new features in Windows 10 update is to add more start screen widgets or whatever they are called that advertise App Store programs. We are so over run with advertisements now days. The Internet has become swamped with ads. Cable tv is nothing but ads. If rather pay up front and not have to deal with that stuff inside the OS.

What I like about it is that, at least for me, any updates that have to do with Windows 10 (after running the program) show up in the "optional updates" section, and are not automatically selected.  Before using GWX Control Panel, it was a real PITA having to go through all the critical updates to see what was associated with W10 (telemetry, ect..).  I think the list may have grown to about 20 or more KB's at this point (not 100% sure though).  Will it work permanently, and do I actually need it to work permanently?  I don't know that for sure.  But it sure is making my life easier now.

Thanks for this thread. After reading it I checked my system and found 4 failed attempts at installing Win10 way back in August. Fortunately I had turned off Automatic Updates some time ago but now I'm gonna keep a closer eye on things.

They are called tiles. They are customizable. You can make them active or not selectively.  For example; a weather app will show the temp or any alerts if they are active without having to open them.  All programs can be tiled as well as apps. Program tiles have no ability to be active.

The OS is not a platform for advertising as such. An app that is free may show an ad if that is the way it is written. None of mine do. Also its generally in the description in the Windows store if an app has ads. Usually they are in app ads.
Also right now Windows 10 is free as long as you have a version that is a qualifying version. That will end in June. After that one will have to purchase Windows 10.

Best

Your can't hold onto that older version of Windows forever as software will no longer be compatible with it.  We all have to face the present and the future as sometime.

Is it possible to upgrade Windows XP to free upgrade Windows 10? On the machine this happened to it dual boots between XP and Windows 7. That way I could leave Windows 7 intact in case there are older programs not compatible with Windows 10.

I believe both OS are full version, not upgrades.

Windows 7 and Win 8.1 (not the enterprise versions) are the only ones that (legally) can upgrade to Win 10 free.  XP is not eligible.

Until I am positive I can get things working on Win 10, how do I block another forced upgrade?

Konrad - You can try Never10. If that doesn't work. PC Advisor has an article detailing various ways to block the upgrade. From all I've read, Windows 10 is pretty good and I'll be getting it soon. I hope you find a way to get your VS-700 working with it.

Thanks, everyone.  I was able to roll back and I do have audio again.

Go to "All Settings" and then "Update and Security" and turn off Automatic Updates...

Also, Windows WILL allow you to roll back updates if, for some reason,
they give you problems...
