jm24 There is still a need to tweek computers. No matter how fast they are, the imbeciles managing software development continue to add crap without permission doing stuff that is not needed. A couple of years ago, at 1am on a wednesday, during a session, the defragger started. Lots of crap like that is run from the taskscheduler.
I think am not alone who is tired with all that endless residents, services and tasks in modern Windows versions. Back in XP time, to play online game i was using a kind of KillEmAll process killed. And that was doing the trick. I wish there is a small "smart" program whith can TEMPORARILY kill all unneeded processes, services and tasks. I can do this manually but: (a) many reappear after updates (b) in general I want the system is completely functional with all background services, so I do not want have them off permanently. I am looking for such software but I have not found it yet.

Thanks, but I will not risk to run it on Win10. The first and the only version is from 2012. Also Sourceforge without the source and from the description it does not deal with Tasks (from my view most problematic part, that is what triggering services...).

You can tell it what to kill. Essentially it sets up military script and runs a dos session. It uses the service id and pauses programs runtime assignents you choose. Alas no changes are permanent. Disabling the BITS service and Windows update through a couple of command lines will also speed up things.

Yes - just Remove and Add your machine in XLN Online Installer and that should do it.

kevinwal I have the creator's update installed on all my machines now, no bumps, no crashes, no corruption. It went very smoothly. As a previous poster pointed out, it will re-enable devices that you may prefer to be off, and you will have to re-authorize some plug-ins, but it was all in all a very smooth update experience for me.
We are about half way through the grace period until we see this forced upon us (even with feature updates deferred) ... so is above in line with what most of you observed with the Creators update? Did you have the reinstall drivers? How about win8 drivers that required driver signing to be turned off to get it to install ... do they still work / require reinstall / don't work?

The update hit my laptop yesterday. I run loopbe virtual midi ports and there were some issues with that. Just had to recheck how many virtual ports I wanted and reboot. Had 2 screensaver programs that needed reinstall. I run dual monitors - found my desktop icons on secondary monitor so I dragged them back to primary monitor. Had to reauth AD2 but was easy. Found Windows.old containing 20G which is probably for backing out the update, if that's possible. Not planning on backing out though since I do regular image backups. So I ran disk cleanup and blew away the 20G. Found Game Mode on and turned it off. The entire update took about 2 hours. Now it seems to be ok, at least until I check other things.

Just migrated the first machine after having an endless battle with stuck updates before ...
I had to reinstall VS-700R drivers with the driver signing off trick (interestingly VS-700C worked without reinstallation), reauthorize AD2, reinstall WAVES about 3 times to get rid of VST scan errors and reinstall the driver for ESI M4U XT MIDI boxes which were behaving really funny after the update ... now seems up to date and properly recognized by win10 ... hopefully nothing serious will pop up now when get down to business ...
... and game mode is of course disabled ..

my desktop was updated to Creator's. Game mode was turned ON when I went to check. Also 'One Drive' is back after I had disabled last year. A few other things are added which I dont need. Also, my Yamaha Motif midi driver was corrupted, and just needed to be reinstalled. And, of course, I had to reregister my AD2 to my 'new' computer. I will see what else comes up. There was a link to an article that detailed turning off unwanted MS programs that I thought was very helpful. Does any one know if there is an updated article that discusses turning off the same sort of background services now that this 'Creators' edition is up us?

I had to roll back, I was having wifi problems of it seeing networks then magically all would disappear. And in Sonar I had to crank my latency buffers so high they were practically maxed out so I could mix. Rolled back and all is good with the world again, well kinda . Hope it gets figured out.

of course no one is going yo turn on Game Mode in both DAW or even CAS. But anyway 1703 sounds really good, much better, sounds like the OS clock and HAL CPU interruption has been improved a lot, much more stable, even 0 jitters for me already, even when no any default services and drivers are disabled, perfect sound! I love that, I'm going to keep using 1703 until the fall update! With load-balancing audio softwares and MMCSS that is the heaven! I'm afraid if it even sounds much better than Mac OS........

I updated to 1703 in May and it's been running very well. As other's have noticed, Game mode was defaulted to ON and several other settings had been reset to defaults. Interestingly, I had to lower my ASIO buffer or it would have significant drop-outs. So there is definitely something fundamentally different about the task scheduler and IO.

The "Creators" update went smoothly for me. It took a long time. It's always nerve-wracking but there seem to be no problems other than file associations had been reset (easy but annoying to fix). Control Panel has been removed from the Start button (a shock) but you can type "Control Panel" into run and locate it then add it to your start menu - it's still there. You can unpin the mail link they add to your taskbar. Gaming Mode was ON by default after the upgrade so I would recommend checking that first and disabling it. I had removed my sound card and am using a Focusrite USB interface so that had to be reset as the default sound. All in all not bad but it was a mildly tense afternoon of waiting and reconfiguration.

I just realized that "Creators" update also re-enabled Windows Sounds so I had to shut those off. Also when I powered up my USB MIDI keyboard I received the message that it was installing "additional configuration". I have no idea what that means. Everything works okay (so far), however.

A couple of clients lost their printers again this past month. Happened in January as well. And the updates this past month reset some privacy settings, added new ones, changed MS feedback/telemetry, and other such auto stuff. Including changing the store to auto download updates for store crap. Annoying.

What do you mean it's not a game? It sure played a game with me this weekend. I was upstairs connected to the daw over RDP. I am running the initial release of Win10 as I like it to just work without the "Getting Windows Ready..." - when it was ready yesterday. Rant aside, I have had some weird issues with windows 10 that I could only hope were caused by me running a DOT 0 version. So via remote RDP, I downloaded the Windows 10 1511 update to bump me just a little from the dot 0 version to see if the crazy things I was seeing would clear up. Upon installing 1511 offline installer, I was alerted to the fact that it would not proceed without Windows Corrupdates on. So I turned them on to satisfy? the 1511 offline installer. It went about it business installing 1511 and wanted to reboot. It did and everything seemed pretty groovy. So I stopped and disabled the Windows Update Service and restarted it. When it came back up it was "Configuring Updates don't you dare turn it off" >:( What? Well guess what. when I was installing 1511 with the internet connected because I was watching baseball and RDPed into the DAW, Creators update was pushed to me. So whn the daw came back I went from 1511 -> creator update. I thought, Oh well onward and upward. I launched Sonar , Did the "This is not a game business," but all the audio stuff was wrong. I fixed all that then Sonar audio engine would not start no matter what as if I had no timing master, so I deleted aud.ini for Splat and retried it. Everything was reset again so I did a "Go back to the previous build" Which seemed to put me back to the dot 0 version (but it could have been 1511). Anyway then Sonar won't start at all. When I click it I got a windows wait cursor for a second then nothing. If seen a lot of failure modes with Sonar thought the years but not that one. I googled it and did all the gratuitous stuff the the Cakewalk Knowledge base has to offer, though about calling like the profile folder redo and all that. Uninstalling Splat and reinstalling it fixed it not. I thought about calling Cakewalk for about a picosecond then so you know what I did? Restored the whole C: drive from an Acronis image file I created Friday before all this this game ensued. Life is back to normal but I am afraid to update Windows 10 more than ever! I hope I never have to.

That method of avoiding updates is and always was only temporary, a bit like turning off Windows Defender from within Windows, it will come back on, only after a longer period, and unless you are continually looking, it will sneak up on you and . . . well you know first hand . There are few methods of disabling updates with the same result, just differing time frames, I find the easiest is just disabling the Windows Update service, the only way it will update then is if you so choose and re enable it purposely. I have found no issues staying well behind the pack, until not long ago I remained on 1511 without issue, now I'm on 1607 and will remain there indefinitely. Everything is rock solid.
