Thanks Dean - as you can see I am chiming in a couple of years after the active post - it however means the post is serving its purpose helping Newbies like myself. Hopefully my revival post will help other noobs that might not currently be aware of this great resource.

Thanks Again.

Thanks. I should probably update it at some point here. It could definitely be expanded upon and tweaked in places.

You don't need a game quality graphics card. You will need one that will support Vista or Windows 7 to get the best out of those OSs. Minimum amount of graphics memory is about 512 MB. The reason is you want to be able to run those OSs with Aero on. This will off load all screen updates directly to the graphics card bypassing the CPU. This is new in Vista and Win 7. It was not possible in XP.  This will give you much better graphics and will let programs such as Sonar refreach the screen as needed without using CPU cycles. Things will not bog down due to heavy graphics updates. Smoothness and responsiveness is markedly improved.

Best

Hmmm, I'm running Win 7 with an ageing graphics card but I always have the visual effects turned all the way down.

'Adjust for best performance' option I believe.

Are you saying that if my card supports it and I run at full effects then I may see an improvement over having everything turned down?

Great post indeed and leads me to a question:
I usually track vox between -12 to -6 db but then normalize to -2 db after tracking. Is this not a good idea in any way?
Thanks,
Randy

It's not so much a case of turning up or down all the settings,  it's enabling (or not disabling) the Aero Engine, which gives you all the fancy grafik FX in Win7 and Vista.

This graphics engin runs on the GPU and offloads all the screen updates from you main CPU, thus improving Sonar performance.

Probably not. Normalizing raises the noise floor along with the signal, so there's no improvement in S/N ratio, and if you subsequently needed to lower the track output to get the right mix, you'd just be working at cross purposes. If you need to raise the vocal level against other tracks at some point, the track trim and output controls work just as well, give you exactly what you need, no more and no less, and are non-destructive.
