Frontier Alpha Track

Having an issue with my surface controller. The slider control on Alpha Track will move when I move it onscreen with mouse. But when I move the slider on AT it will not respond on screen. all the other input seems to work but not slider. I've tried resetting everything and recalibrating unit but to no avail. Any help would be welcome.

Thanks

You probably already checked this, but I was just wondering if you had "channel aftertouch" enabled in the preferences.

also, check the configuration of the controller in preferences to ensure you have midi checked both input and output.

All of the above, AND make sure you've selected the control surface in and out port under the Control Surfaces section of Preferences/Midi.

I've only recently set my Alphatrack up again after a few years of dust collection!

BTW, my AlphaTrack works fine with all the versions of Sonar back a lot of versions. I'm not sure exactly how far back. Was it designed to work with 8.5 and the Sonitus EQ? Maybe that was it.

Thanks for your suggestions unfortunately none of those solutions work. It's sending out a signal as I can start, stop, go thru tracks, But the slider and also the touch pad do not respond. Very frustrating.

Funny think I hooked AT to my lap top and it worked fine. Thought it was a USB issue but tried some other ports on Studio Computer and same problem. :-(

Perhaps you need to delete drivers for AT and re-install?

Sorry to hear that!!!!!!
Maybe there's something within Sonar related to the AT that has to be removed manually also?

Yes I did check Channel Aftertouch and that still didn't help. Seems everything works except manually moving the slider  to effect whats on the screen. And the touch pad doesn't respond either. If I try to write it will show where I have touched the slider and even write a perimeter but just leave s straight line.

Re: Frontier Alpha Track 2014/07/29 21:11:27 (permalink)
Ok. Let's get to the basics. When you install the Alpha Track you can install a driver for Cakewalk/Sonar.

When you are in Preferences and you add the device > Clicking the yellow star > you must select Frontier Alpha Track under Controller/Surface and Input and output ports as the alpha track.

You want both ACT and WAI (Where Am I) checked.
Control Strips visible in All Strips dotted.

Click Apply + OK (to be sure).

From there when you click on a track, you should see the track name on the alpha track screen...
Do you see it?

In track view, show the track inspector and move the fader.

Still no luck?

You are using a USB2 port, yes? I believe that is required. (but I would expect system crashes if you are not).

** Yes, Leadfoot, Ryan helped me out and modified my account so I could upgrade it. It was very nice of him. :-)

Yes Geoff I did all that you listed, nothing changed. Unistalled driver again. Did a reg clean installed driver again. Still same problem. A couple of things though during the install it wanted me to look for FW-1884 in device manager and update driver. Couldn't find that. It also told me to look for Program Files/FW1884-instal folder that I could not find either. Not sure what that is all about. Now I just double check and hooked it up on my Lap Top and again everything worked fine. I then plug in to a direct USB in the front of my PC (I use a hub) still same problem with Slider and touch pad not sending signal out to puter. This is really weird

Just for the hell of it, have you tried a different USB cable going from the AT into your computer?

Could it be a power management issue with your USB ports?

Power issue? hmmm just never had this problem until recently. I don't think it's a cable but wroth a try I suppose. Also not much support from the Frontier Group guys. Not even sure their still in business anymore are they. You would think they have some updates.  I wrote but never got a response.

Not the cable, but go into Control Panel in Windows, and go into the Device Manager. I believe it's under system devices you'll see a few instances of USB root hub. In each instance go into power management and make sure it's unchecked. I don't know if it's got anything to do with your problem, but it's worth looking at.

You have nothing to lose by switching cables. You never know.  Yeah, I think Frontier is dead. My AT works well for what I need (a remote for controlling Sonar a few feet away from the laptop while playing drums or guitar, and the punch in feature with the foot switch is a huge plus!!!).

Re: Frontier Alpha Track 2014/07/30 06:19:25 (permalink)
I would try bypassing the Hub. I have some ports on my monitor that I cannot use for the Alpha Track. I never looked into why, but I know it doesn't work. I have to plug it into the port on the front of the PC in my rack.

I'm not saying this is it, but it's something to try. I'm kinda doubtful about the USB Cable being the problem, since the same cable is used with the other computer (true?).

Here is info on USB Selective Suspend, although I don't think that is the issue here... this would be more likely to cause dropouts than a failure of the device to send data... You can change this setting under Power Options > Advanced > USB Settings > USB Selective Suspend.
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/usbcoreblog/archive/2011/05/11/demystifying-usb-selective-suspend.aspx

Does the device properly show the track name on the Alpha Track Screen when you select a track? This would indicate that power is getting to the device.

I will try some of those suggestions. To answer Geoff's question. Yes the track is displayed in the window although the window illumination is quite dim and not what it used to be. Tried adjusting that with no success. But you can still see the graphics. Did see though that the display doesn't respond to the slider up and down either. Where it does when hooked to lap Top where it works properly. Illumination still dim on Lap Top as well.

Sounds like it's not getting the right voltage. Like I said, switch cables. Also, I'm not sure if you tried a different usb port. I know you said you unplugged it from the hub, but make sure you try a usb port that isn't related/connected to the one you've been using. I had an issue with my iPhone in which it would only work on the left side of my computer, if I plugged it into any of the usb ports on the right, it wouldn't work properly.  Perhaps you have too many USB devices plugged in and the computer is not able to supply the AT with the voltage it needs to operate properly?

 Excerpt from the User Guide
Local Controls
Some AlphaTrack functions are always available, whether a computer application is running or not. For example, you can always adjust AlphaTrack’s display features. To access the local controls, hold down both the SHIFT and STOP buttons. The LCD will display the local control menu:
While holding SHIFT+STOP down, you can turn the encoders to:
• Adjust the LCD’s contrast
• Adjust the LCD backlight (Hi or Lo)• Adjust the sleep timeout (from 1 to 60 minutes, or Never)(Note: when you touch an encoder, the LCD screen changes to show more details about the corresponding parameter.)To calibrate the fader and touch sensors, press F4 (while pressing SHIFT+STOP) and then release all the buttons. While it is calibrating, do not touch any part of the AlphaTrack. (Calibration is finished when the LCD screen clears.) You should calibrate your AlphaTrack if any of the touch sensors seem to be malfunctioning, or if the fader only moves much less than its full vertical range. The sleep timer is reset whenever you touch an encoder, the fader, or the touch strip, or press a button, or receive an LCD, LED, or fader update from the computer. If none of these happen (the AlphaTrack is idle) and the sleep timeout time is reached, then the LCD back light is dimmed and all the LED’s are turned off. To wake up the unit just press a button or touch an encoder, fader, or touch strip and the unit.Note: Since any user input or computer update resets the sleep timer, any regular update from the computer, like a blinking LED, will prevent AlphaTrack from going to sleep since it is constantly being updated.
Hit F4>Calibrate LCD Light Sleep

Thanks you guys I'm baffled I've gone through everything you have suggested. The light situation is I think a burned out bulb. As that won't even light when hooked to lap top either but I can still see the screen. And it may be to many usbs connected. I've added two PCI USB cards one is dedicated to my Tascam US-1641 the others I have tried hooking directly. It use to work fine. Funny thing is I always use the mouse more anyway  But do appreciative the time you have taken to try and help. So enough time spent on this and lets make some great music! Will

Re: Frontier Alpha Track 2015/05/19 10:26:06 (permalink)
Hi, found this post cause I seem to have the very same issue (of I got it right) my AlphaTrack started, all of a sudden, to act funny. The touch stripe is dead and the Fader sends data but won't receive, thus there's no motor action.
Also the feature I use a lot: touching a control and clicking AUTO on Alphatarck enables taht control for Autom-Write on Sonar. That's broken.
How could this happen?
Any thoughts?

FWIW:
I updated to last Platinum version (Dorchester) and that kicked off this issue. But rolling back system wont solve it. X3 and X2 that used to work fuine present the same issue now...
Tried a different USB port, nothing.
Removed and updated AT drivers: nothing.
Thanks for any idea.
