After a bit more playing with GPO5, I can say that most of my hopes were realized, though not spectacularly. As for Garritan Orchestral Strings, the pizzicato (i.e. plucked strings) is better than the regular GPO strings, but there's not a lot of difference otherwise, aside from more articulations. The brass is quite a bit better, and will allow me to shelve Vienna Sp. Ed., which just is too problematic for me. I liked their trumpet and Eng Horn, but now I think I can get by without them. And I can use EWSO pizzicato, especially if I run Reaper or upgrade my Sonar 8.5. (Otherwise the EW basses will crash Sonar if I'm not careful to not stop the music suddenly while they are playing. A real problem if you haven't saved lately).

Download is only 4,5 GB for 16 GB of samples.
Edith says: that's some heavy compression.

Haven't used 5 yet but threw it into some projects to swap out with GPO 4. I must say the results so far are stellar! While it is not EastWest quality, it stands on its own.  The GOS content really fills in the void of what 4 should have had all along. Now to decide between the 4 or 5 libraies I have. It has crossed my mind to just stack all of them together! Who wouldn't love to be at the conductors podium in front of a 500 piece orchestra? SHEESH!!!!!!!!

I got mine installed just now and checked out a few samples. This'll be fun to explore. It's working when I open it in Sonar, but the sounds in stand alone, must be playing at the wrong rate. They sound half speed/pixelated. The interface (18i20) was correctly set at 44.1khz for either mode.....
Anyone?
I'm recovering from food poisoning yesterday, and am very "fuzzy", so any help would be appreciated. I'll figure it out, but my thought processes seem to be off....way off! LOL

It's an awesome product. I once got a hold of some classical midi's - did the whole Nutcracker Suite in GPO4 - darn thing has over 500 DL's on SoundCloud - it's that good. Not bad for an amateur.

FWIW, the standalone version seemed to be OK here when I tried it last night.    I'm using an 18i6 so a very similar interface.     I hadn't updated the Aria player in quite some time and there were settings I hadn't noticed before.... I would poke around the interface settings  and Aria Player settings to see if anything jumps out.

Although I've only had about an hour to play around with it I do think it was well worth the $50 upgrade.   But what I'm really curious to do is a side-by-side comparison between GPO4 and GPO5 since both now display.   The drag n' drop from list to slot is really nice...

Yeah, I thought that too, while I was playing around with it(the drag and drop).
I figured there must be some settings off and will mess around with it, when I'm feeling more able to tackle it.
I'd it was a no brainer upgrade, especially for the price.

Spent most of the day dropping GPO5 in to older projects that had 4. I'm not noticing much difference when using the 5 string sections. Pretty much no difference. BUT, I have been using the Garritan Orchestra Strings library and there are tons of articulations that are going to prove very useful! I can't really comment on the woodwinds and brass, etc., because I have not gotten around to any projects that use them yet but I will say that the GOS new versions are really well done. They are worth the $50 upgrade on their own.

Believe the main brass, strings and woodwinds are the same. A lot of it is the same samples as before, but the new stuff they added is really good. The extra project SAM brass is a nice addition. The GOS strings sound much better than the old ones, although the small section violins have way too much vibrato. I don't know why they did that. The harps are a nice addition and new pianos sound good too. I was really surprised at how good the new choirs sound. One disappointment however the fact that we can't control the vibrato on the new solo strings. It's a simple feature to add, I wish they would just throw that in there instead of having the baked in vibrato. Although at least it is usable unlike the small section violins. Otherwise this is a great upgrade. Definitely worth the $50.

I agree, many of the sounds are the same, but they sound better to my ears, smoother, cleaner, purer. Esp. the woodwinds, always GPO's greatest strength.

+1 on the GPO woodwinds, as EW Hollywood woodwinds are not the best.

I have SO Gold, and only use their flute. As for their brass, it's good, as are the strings and perc. I find that the two libraries compliment  each other well. I was also using Vienna Sp. Ed. but the problems outweigh the benefits. Their Eng Horn and Trumpet are wonderful, but all their instruments have a lag that is very hard to adjust, and get them to be in sync with other libraries. It also takes forever to load, and when I create a midi1 file to export, and I want to delete all the synths except GPO, my system crashes repeatedly when I try to delete their's. I have found you first have to delete every inst. And even then it takes several tries. So I've given up on it. Not worth it for just a few good sounds.

Just another thumbs up for GPO 5.
Significant upgrade from 4. Upgrade price of $50 is a no brainer for anyone still sitting on the fence. Even the full entry price is probably worth it.

I did not feel that Garritan 3 or 4 were worth the full price but still filled the bill well enough that I jumped on it. GPO 5 is definitely worth every penny now! Although, Miroslav 2 is still ahead but the full price is what you may expect for their asking price.
It is now very hard to pick between those two. And I still have Peter Szeidlaczak and DSF St. Thomas HD strings for DimPro sitting around.

I use several Dim Pro sounds. I have a theory that some of them are really souped-up GPO insts. If you listen to the flute, oboe, clarinet and bassoon "in the venue," they sound like better versions of the GPO solos for those insts. As for DP strings, I occasionally use some as well, esp very high and very low. Their Horn solo is also very nice, and also sounds like its really GPO. When you say Thomas HD strings, are those the DP strings, or an expansion pac?

I got the HD strings for DP(those are the St Thomas?), but realized I haven't used them yet, nor done much of anything with Siedlaczek, either.
Too focused on other stuff, I suppose.....

Yes, the DSF HD Strings are the St. Thomas orchestra strings. They are an expansion pack for DimPro. There are better librarys out there but for the money and the ease of getting good strings in DimPro they are worth a look. As anything else they take some editing to get great results with. The presets are a little over the top but you can get good results.
And, Yes, I did get the free harps for Miroslav 2. Very Nice!

I didn't remove GPO4. However, it does not show up as a selection in the new Aria browser. Haven't had the time to open a project that used GPO4. Should I expect any issues?

Hello,
I just downloaded GPO5 to my F external drive. When I right click to extract the files My task Manager says Not Responding. Any ideas? Once extracted and the installation came up I was planning to have Garritan installed on my main C drive. This won't work if I can't extract the files first. I am not very knowlegable with computer stuff. I would appreciate any suggestions.

I have heard it is best to keep 4 on your drive because the Solo Strings that are Stradavarius and other priceless stringed solo instruments are not included in 5. I really haven't had time to look.
GPO4 comes up on my Aria browser as simply GPO.
Mack, I would move the installer to the C drive. I have GPO 4 and 5 on my C drive but I custom installed and put the samples in a folder on my secondary drive. GPO seems to really like that setup. I think it will probably install once on the C drive but there is a possibility the download is corrupt.

Mack,

Don't want to lead you down a wrong road, but a couple possibilities.

The file is so big, the not responding may be just that it takes excess time to read everything in processa of unpacking it.

You could download a trial of WinZip which handles larger files than some of the windows managers.

If winzip can't open it, good possibility that the download file is corrupt. I had problems on a win 7 rig with weird messages that the installer wasn't compatible with the operating system.  That was trying to install from an external drive. Had to retransfer the file a second time to the C drive. So try copying the zip file to your C drive and extract from there.

Try two and everything went smooth. Program is rock solid and everything works the way it is supposed to. Really a welcome addition to the orchestral stuff.
