Guitar Players---Favorite Axe?

So where's everyone's passion?  For me, even though I have like 20 guitars, there's only two that I use for pretty much everything.

My best friend (guitar-wise) is a '96 Epiphone LP-100... that's pretty much LP-100 in name only.  I've redone all of the hardware, electronics, and so on.  It's by no means high-end, but gets the job done very nicely.  I know exactly what it will do, and there are no surprises!

I have 6 guitars all together, but my go to is my 1984 Japanese Fender Strat with EMG Gold pickups.

I also have a Gibson Custom but I hate it. I only play it to get that unique sound. I only bought it because I got an incredible deal on it. $350. Can you believe that? Those are $5,000 guitars. It was a second with a crack in the finish, but who cares. Still sounds the same.

I also have a 1965 Fender Villager 12 string, but I never play it. Too hard to keep in tune. You'd think a 45 year old American made guitar would be worth something, but even in mint condition those Villager's are worth very little. Fender just re-released the Villager 12 string after many years.

Yep, I'm in the same boat as the original poster.  I've got seventeen guitars and two basses, but I usually seem to play the same three or four.

Mainly a 1971 Gibson Les Paul Deluxe with a factory custom neck, a 1984 Kramer Baretta with EMG 81/85 pickups and original Floyd Rose, a 2003 B.C. Rich ASM Platinum Assassin and a 2008 Line6 Variax 500, which is surprisingly comfortable to play and extremely versatile with it's guitar modeling technology.

    Have a great weekend, guys!

I only have a handful of guitars compared to some of you guys, but I went through a lot before I arrived at my '79 Les Paul Standard. Man, I love that thing, it just seems to fit my personality somehow.

However, to get some alternative tones I just ordered one of these, it's coming on Tuesday.

First guitar I've bought in 15 years so I'm very excited, even though it's not the real thing.

I have just one Washburn X-Series starter which is about 7 years old. I didn't even buy it, it was passed on to me.
So that's my one and only favorite axe.

I have American Strats and and an American Tele among my guitars, but my pick-up guitar for gigs and recording is my 95' Japanese White Stratocaster with whammy bar. Its as well built as any American Strat I have handled, has the classic Strat sound across all the switch selections and looks and handles like a dream. In addition it has no additional quirky 'colour' to the sound which makes it perfect to put through a variety of amps / pedals / software emulators (GR4) and still retain it's 'Strattyness' while being incredibly versatile.

I guess you've figured I love this guitar. As an edit after posting, I'll take a photo and upload via my Blackberry as my forum homage to "Pristine Christine"

    EDIT: Here she is -

This forum software frustrates me regularly, I put the cursor right at the bottom and then insert the link to my Photobucket account, but it inserts the photo link at a seemingly random point in the middle of the post !

FIXED ! But why it worked at the second attempt still puzzles me. It seems best if you leave a couple of line spaces above and below the insert point, and use Cntl-G instead of the insert photo icon, although logically this shouldn't make any difference. Mind you, we are used to "workarounds" in there 'ere parts

Just recently I fixed up my 1995 Esteve flamenco guitar, spruce top and spanish cypress back and sides . Put on new tuners and made a new bone nut and bridge sadle. Leveled and re-crowned the frets and put on a new scratchplate. This is the only guitar I've ever owned that actually sounds better with age.

The one guitar I always come back to is my hand-made neck-through 'Strat' with Bill Lawrence hot-rail pups and a single-locking (behind the nut on the headstock) Kahler tremolo system; it's probably around 30 years old now, so it's well worn in!

It was originally made for local music store owner Stew, a wonderful guitarist and member of a few bands, and also occasional session player. After a while, he found he wasn't using it much so he decided to put it up for sale in his shop for £300.

By lucky coincidence, I was in the market for spending about that sort of dosh on upgrading - I had a couple of guitars at the time: a crap Les Paul copy (a cheap and nasty Hondo II if I remember correctly) and a type of 'Frankenstein' which had a neck from one axe bolted onto the body of another.

Anywho, for that sort of money I was looking to buy a Japanese Fender Strat or similar and I'd tried a few out in Stewie's shop. One of the guys working in the shop suggested I try the guitar Stew was selling and I fell in love with it the moment I started playing it.

When I strap it on now, I get the same familiarity as you would putting on a comfy pair of shoes, or a favourite jumper - you guys know what I mean

I have some cheap guitars, being poor, but they work pretty well.

Squire Strat, actually my brother's, part of a Squire Strat Pack I bought for him back when he was axeless. Epiphone Les Paul, bought used for $100. It's my main electric, sounds great and plays pretty good, too. Epiphone PR200, bought at a lien sale for $40. Fender 12-string, $200 at Sam Ash a few years ago. The last is my brother's Johnson acoustic, pawn shop purchase by him. Plus I have a Squire P-Bass.
My favorite was a 1977 re-issue of a 1955 Les Paul. Black on blond. I hated to sell that thing.

    Greg
I am selling my MIM Fender Stratocaster HSS, red and black. PM for more details.

Music Creator 2003, MC Pro 24, SONAR Home Studio 6 XL, SONAR  X3e, CbB, Focusrite Saffire, not enough space.
    Everything is better with pie.

Beautiful Steve. ( you don't like knobs? )

Out of 8 Strats and other electrics including a LP my fave is the Strat style I built.
    next, a Tele.
then a Cordoba Fusion 14 RS. (nylon)
    Geddy Less bass.
For midi stuff I really like the Roland equipped Strat
Acoustic fav is a Guild DC 5 NT
Lap Steel fav...one I built. ( can't play worth nothin' but it's fun when I get a chance)

I could get rid of everything else and be happy with just these.

    I have a 69SG.

It was originally Red.... until it was stolen and dinged up pretty bad in the process..... then it was stripped and painted White.... huge mistake.... stripped again and I went back natural ... as you see it below.
I have an Ibenez acoustic as well.... but the SG is the one.

Les Paul with Gibson 57' Classic and 57' Classic Plus pickups.

Self made Strat style, with Seymour Duncan Hot Rail, Cool Rail, Vintage Rail pickups, Original Floyd Rose Tremolo.

I love all of these guitars, and figure if I can't get the tone I'm looking for out of them it's probably not out there.

Yari Alvarez acoustic, with LR Baggs pickup.

Oh, and they are all left handed, so they are like really freakin rare!

    Favorite guitar?

The correct answer is always "the next one".

In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.

I dunno Michael, John T ain't so bad

Truth is, I never take the tone pots off full, and my chubby little hand and fingers were constantly moving the volume pot around accidentally! Easiest thing to do was to remove the knobs altogether.

    Thanks mate

I just googled imaged and found this pic of the exact model of Hondo I had - a Les Paul 'Gold Top' copy:

In all fairness, it didn't play too bad at all and had quite a reasonable tone. The only problem was the pick-ups, they were so bad you couldn't even hear the separate strings when you played a chord through a clean setting!

And once you cranked the gain up even just a little, them buggers would squeal like Pistolpete with his knackers caught in a box of AC97's

On the whole, I think my experience with Hondo was reasonably good. I recall a mate of mine at school had a Hondo II Precision bass copy which was truly dreadful - it didn't matter how you set up the action on it, the E and A strings were always out of tune from about the fourth fret upward!

As long as we're sharing pictures...

And, forgot to mention my classical guitar.  It's a Washburn model I discovered almost by accident in a shop about 20 years ago.  I'd never heard of Washburn making this variety of guitar and was curious - the shop wanted to move it, so I got a great price.  It's a sweet little guitar, I have never been disappointed.

Only electric I have is my early PRS.

I got it in 88 or 89 and mistreated it no case, always getting knocked off the stand. It ended up getting a huge crack in the body where the neck bolts on. I lived with it for years glued it the best I could, then luckily I found a great replacement body on e-bay. I'm mailing Spacey the old one so he can use as a template and to show why it should be illegal for me to go anywhere near a piece of wood with tools, paints or any type of adhesives.

Awesome stories and pics. Love those Strats, I had the same problem turning down the volume on a Kramer ,I had ages ago, set up like a Strat. when palm muting  Strummy, I removed and bypassed the volume. Though I don't think they are a good looking guitar, I played a Mexican Tele  my neighbor had and just couldn't get over the tone. I love my PRS and will always keep it but I'm 99.993% sure my next guitar is going to be a Tele.
