I'd also point out that whenever a "sow's ear" has required a makeover, it's never been the choice of equalizer that made the difference. No, that's all about which compressor you use!

For coloring asignal I like the Waves SSL E- channelstrip and Slate VMR.
For neutral sound and finetuning Fab ProQ and DMG Equl......

Best coloring eq sound I ever had in my studio
was of a friends AMS Neve 8803 stereoequalizer.(Hardware)

I'm  a big fan of Pultec emulations and flexible eq's like Waves F6, VSL Suite: Master EQ, UAD Precison Equaliser. Transparency has it's place, so anything with Large Q values is good.

My faves are the Fab Filter Pro-Q2 and Eiosis AirEQ.  Sure I like some others for more color (mostly my UA Neve, Harrison, Pultec).

And yeah this may be a Zombie thread, but it's always a popular and on-going topic.  Look at how long this has gone on over at Gearslutz:

The one that comes up a lot there that hasn't been discussed much here is the Acustica-Audio EQ's, mostly Nebula, but Pink gets some mention too. Supposedly the latest versions are much less CPU intensive than previous versions.

That zombie looks like Hugh Laurie.

And, a vote for DMG Equilibrium. Here's a few reasons. 1) Just run an audio track through it, make no eq cuts or adds - it has a volume slider and you can boost or lower the track's volume, and it's really really musical what it does to the audio - again, with no eq applied.

2. It has a piano keyboard at the bottom so you can see on a piano where you are making eq cuts or boosts. Simple.

3. It can be really simple to use and make sound great. OR, you can open up the hood and be utterly lost in permutations of settings which easily run into the trillions. It has two modes, offering different levels of cpu usage, but they both sound great.

I demoed the Fab but went the other way. It's a great plug-in as well.

I think there are other plugins that excel at "character" so if you are just getting one EQ, make it a surgical tool.

What eq did the zombie prefer??

The one that was super "notch" ural.

The Air band is part of why I like the Eiosis AirEQ, although Maag did come up with it first.  I have come very close to getting the Maag (have seen some good deals from both UA and Plugin Alliance) - then I look in my plugin folder and see how many EQ's I already have....

Scoot
Years ago (late 90's) a friend used to make downbeat breakbeat tunes, he was pretty good at finding little loops from his record collection. He had the same spirit folio mixer as me. He played me a mix, and I looked at his gain structure and asked If I could have a go at setting up the mix. He left me to it, when he came back he exclaimed 'what did you do' and I couldn't tell if he meant in a good way or not. I asked him how he meant 'where did the noise go?' he asked. He didn't appreciate the effect of setting his gains accumilating ofer 12 tracks so much. He was chuffed to bits to find out his equipment was much better than he'd realised.

I remember you!

Yes , suffering GAS is like an epidemic.

Next step for me is to get a hardware eq ,
the elysia hardware ( Elysia xfilter ) is a steel compared to
the Neve a.o. eq´s .
Have to do the first step to save money by not bying software fx
anymore.

Re: Hands Down Best EQ 2017/07/19 17:49:31 (permalink)
Over the years I've gotten to know my EQ's to the point where I recognize that some of them are better than others at certain tasks. For example I use the Waves SSL E-Channel because of how sweet it's high shelf is on hats and because it sounds great when boosting the mids of a bass, but when I want to boost low end I'll use the Native Instruments Enhanced EQ because it's low end is an absolute beast compared to the SSL. I don't know why and I don't care - I just like the sound of certain EQ's on certain things. Sometimes if I want to boost the 1kHz region I'll use the Soundtoys Sie-Q because it's just awesome in that frequency range, even with huge boosts that would sound odd on other EQ's.

For basic/surgical work (i.e. high/low filtering and cuts) I use the Quadcurve EQ because it's so convenient and easy to use. Any time I need to boost I'm thinking about character and reaching for one of my fancier EQ's.

i like the IK Neve and API character eqs (which have mid/side options) , the quadcurve, and the awesome new cakewalk LPEQ(which doesn't need to be used in linear phase mode and also has mid/side options) for ultra precision.

will probably spring for the overloud and sonimus EQs if they are bundled or put on special as I like the elegance/low dsp usage philosophy of those companies

Just two days I thought I'd (again) compare the prochannel EQ to the Izotope's Neutron EQ.
I tried a couple of simple  examples, e.g. 2000 Hz, Q=2, -6db with one active filter. To my ears, Neutron EQ sounded clearer and achieved the EQ with less overall "muffling". So for me, Neutron stays on all buses and tracks.

I'm not sure Neutron is "the best", but it's the best I have.

I tend to think you only need a few EQ's.  For me the bundled Pro EQ in Studio One nearly does it all for me.  It has varied levels of quality, has all the features you need to get any EQ exercise done and sounds great.  I back that up with a Pultec emulation from Nomad which sounds really great in a different way and adds quite a different vibe to the sound.  Requires careful setup to get the best out of it too.  I also have a Boz tilt EQ too which is another quick form of EQ which works well in many places.  To add to that I use Waves Scheps Parallel Particles which is loverly form of parallel EQ processing.  Plus some channel strips for me too such as SSL and Studio One are offering really nice channel strips as well now standard. With choice of multiple emulation types.

In mastering it is nice to have a mastering grade EQ such as the one in Harrison Mixbus. There are many others too. Some really nice VST's out there for that sort of thing.

I don't know if you are aware of this but the L-Phase EQ from Cakewalk has up to 20 independent band settings. Amazing what you find out when you are not looking.

I have Schepss 73 which is a subtle touch but very nice analogue grit to add to a mix or synth, guitar or vocal.

Love this article: http://www.joemeekpage.info/essay_03_E.htm (part of a bigger one)

As a thought most of us are (sadly) preconditioned by what we have heard so we expect and accept the colouration that some of the modelled (character) EQs add preferring them to the more "accurate" ones that are available to us. The next "break through" in sound could be someone's creative use of an EQ that is not any anyone's list of favourites.

This one has been resurrected, but I'm glad since I wanted to give an update.

Some things change and some things never change. When I purchased the Melda Mautodynamic EQ. It was my go to EQ for hard to mix tracks. Since then I have updated my copy of Ozone to version 7 advanced. It includes Ozone's dynamic Eq. Very similar to the Melda product. In a nutshell, Melda is more complicated. The Ozone version is very effective at the basic chore, so I found myself using it more mainly for the simplicity when I didn't have lots of time to play with the GUI in the Melda product.
More recently I've purchased Neutron which wasn't available when I started this thread. It's very effective with the added ability to learn a frequency and look for frequency clashes. So far, it seems to work best on a few key parts of a mix, like comparing a bass drum and bass guitar. Might not be best for drenching the entire mix. I say this from some inexperience. Give me some more time on that one.

Can't continue without mentioning the great EQ plugs Cakewalk recently developed coming as standard in Platinum.
Great EQ's! Probably all someone without GAS would likely need.
I don't believe we have anyone here like that though

right now, with code N3WS10 at Time Space
you can make the jump to Advanced from Neutron Standard

About $55 with exchange...

I might have to do this just for the Value, and the
ability to use the EQ standalone would be a bonus.
I don't need 7.1 (that I know of) but I think it would
probably be a good investment, if only for "Resale Value"

Don't have Alloy anymore...redundant with Neutron (not to mention it's no longer supported)
And O7A doesn't have the Track Assistant, which has proven to
be quite beneficial for getting quick "starting points", nor does
it have the "Masking Meter" ability for "Crash zones" (which
standard already has I know).

Do I NEED it?  NO.  But it makes the package"More valuable" if
