Putting on my Nitpicker's Hat for the moment... Re: #16 (Andie MacDowell in Four Weddings and a Funeral), it's been awhile since I've seen it, but I'm fairly sure she's playing an American. Strange how Cleese perceived her genuine Southern accent as badly done British! Otherwise, enjoyed the post! JD

ORIGINAL: daveny5 At least we have good dentists! Maybe some truth in that, I don't have a dentist at all. But then again I have no teeth either... Was it John Cleese too that asked what the difference was between a 'Yank' and a 'Jerk'?... We have all the 'nanny' stuff relating to fireworks that Bitflipper was referring to as well, but we do our fireworks on Nov 5 to celebrate somebody blowing up parliament. A far more worldly unified cause for glee than getting one over on yer best pals IMO. Seriously though, have a Happy Holiday guys and gals...

Strange how Cleese perceived her genuine Southern accent as badly done British! I'd love to hear what he thinks of the Maine accent! I swear it's half British and half redneck. Perhaps it's left over from Benedict Arnold coming through on his way to Nova Scotia!!!! Oh, by the way, for you fellow Americans, you turn Right at Maine, which is in the Northeastern part of the United States—the country where you live—and travel north east . . . .

England should be glad there's a country with well intentioned people with some sort of strenght and honor like the United States. Although we may not be capable of electing intelligent people to run our country and our idiot in a position of major power basically ruined our reputation around the world, most Americans are decent people. Besides... We had to bail England in both world wars. Funny you should mention German cars. You could have been driving German cars and speaking German... since the US probably stopped Hitler from invading Britian in the second World War. He came very close to invading the majority of Europe.

Twig...funny stuff...received in the humorous spirit in which it was sent...Now two items posted for you viewing pleasure is my feeble attempt to insult everyone in the forum who is from "over there"... "European Threat Levels" The English are feeling the pinch in relation to recent terrorist threats and have raised their security level from "Miffed" to "Peeved." Soon, though, security levels may be raised yet again to "Irritated" or even "A Bit Cross." Londoners have not been "A Bit Cross" since the blitz in 1940 when tea supplies all but ran out. Terrorists have been re-categorised from "Tiresome" to a "Bloody Nuisance." The last time the British issued a "Bloody Nuisance" warning level was during the great fire of 1666 which left London in rubble. Also, the French government announced yesterday in Paris that it has raised its terror alert level from "Run" to "Hide." The only two higher levels in France are "Surrender" and "Collaborate." The rise was precipitated by a recent fire that destroyed France's white flag factory, effectively paralyzing the country's military capability. It's not only the English and French who are on a heightened level of alert. Italy has increased the alert level from "Shout Loudly and Excitedly" to "Elaborate Military Posturing." Two more levels remain: "Ineffective Combat Operations" and "Change Sides." The Germans also increased their alert state from "Disdainful Arrogance" to "Dress in Excellent Uniforms and Sing Marching Songs." They also have two higher levels: "Invade a Neighbour" and "Bite Off more than you can chew." Belgians, on the other hand, are all on holiday as usual, and the only threat they are worried about is NATO pulling out of Brussels. In further news, the Spanish are all excited to see their new submarines ready to deploy. These beautifully designed subs have glass bottoms so the new Spanish navy can get a really good look at the old Spanish navy. ..... ------- And now some thoughts on heaven and hell from a national perspective... Heaven is where the police are British, the cooks are French, the mechanics are German, the lovers are Italian and it's all organized by the Swiss. Hell is where the police are German, the cooks are English, the mechanics are French, the lovers are Swiss, and it's all organized by the Italians.

ORIGINAL: DonaldDuck We had to bail England in both world wars. Funny you should mention German cars. You could have been driving German cars and speaking German... since the US probably stopped Hitler from invading Britian in the second World War. Here we go. Both times late, remember both Wars the US saw what was happening and was quite happy not getting involved allowing the tyrrany to prevail, albeit they were quicker off the mark in the 2nd one it only took them two years to get the point in '42 (after Pearl Harbor). Actually Hitler's plan to invade England (operation Sea Lion) was foiled in 1940, two years before any American involvement largely by the RAF (which included a few foresighted American volunteers.) Later though we came to owe the US a huge debt of men and material when we fought side by side to counter the scourge of National Socialism. No one to my knowledge in the UK will ever lose the sense of gratitude for that. Now can we go back to the good humour that the thread was intended to bring to YOUR holiday?

As we're plunging inevitably into nationalism and cliche'... ''I knew this woman once, her father was Russian, her mother was a Swiss-Arab. Brilliant cook, but he couldn't reach the stove.'' Apologies to The Fast Show

It's no accident that obesity is less of a problem here than it is in the US... HEALTH NEWS England Heading for Obesity Crisis Contributed by Tom Harrison| 26 August, 2006 21:36 GMT England is heading toward a health crisis that could see as many as 12 million adults and 1 million children categorized as obese by 2010 unless steps to reverse the current trend are successful. By 2010, 13 million men, women and children in England will be obese, a new report predicts. Of that number, an estimated 1 million will be 15 years of age and younger. The projected 2010 rates are similar to those already found in the US today, where an obesity crisis is acknowledged. An estimated 30 percent of US adults aged 20 years and older -- over 60 million people -- are obese, while an estimated 65 percent of US adults aged 20 years and older are either overweight or obese, defined as having a BMI of 25 or higher, according to the Centers for Disease Control. http://health.dailynewscentral.com/content/view/0002397/63/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I don't know why Americans are picked on about this so much . . . Just another misguided stereotype, I think.
