How Many Here Use ReWire?
When ReWire first came out, some of the folks at Propellerheads commented that Sonar's implementation was one of the best. It certainly was rock-solid. I often used Reason as an outboard "instrument rack" for Sonar, and it still does that well. Even though I have Komplete, which has a lot of overlap, I still like Reason's virtual instruments. (I used to ReWire Live into Sonar, but that became less important with the arrival of the Matrix view.) So I was wondering how prevalent ReWire use was among the community here. Do you use it? Used to use it but don't any more? Want to check it out? If you use it, what do you ReWire into Sonar? Inquiring minds want to know...

I used to use it with Sonar 7 and Project 5. It was cool but kind of a pain to manage everything, like all the routing of in/outs between the program. Then later when I would go back to the project I would always find something missing, like one of the plugins I no longer had or even worse, I couldn't find the corresponding Project 5 project that went with the particular song in Sonar. If I find myself using in the future I will definitely quickly convert all the rewire stuff to audio in Sonar.

I use it for Notion, there is an experiment I still haven't run where you can rewire Reaper. This might be a workaround for vari-speed. Lol. ;) I hope this is Cakewalk testing out getting rid of rewire. It has it's uses. Ben

It's not Cakewalk testing out anything, I'm checking out the level of interest to see if I should write anything applications-oriented about it.

I use it with Live. It is useful I think, though I'm not always comfortable with the 'rewiring' process. I have tried to use Matrix View but while useful, it is not the same as full blown Live...so Rewire it is. Regards,

There's a way to use Sonar but mix in Mixbus. It seems complicated and a lot of work but I would like to try it once. If I like it I'll continue but MB only has 4 busses at present and 4 is not enough.

I got it working, but never actually used it in a project, when some vsti were working in an other DAW but not in Sonar X. That issue has since been fixed, so I do not use it at all.....but it was cool once I got it working and saved as template. I would be interested to see what other uses rewire has. JR

I've never used it with Sonar but I used to ReWire Reaper into Pro Tools. It was pretty rock solid and enabled me to use a lot of synths without 32-bit Amateur Tools crapping out on me. The only downside I guess was having to open and close both programs when loading a project. Other than that it worked perfectly.

Very interesting responses so far. Now that I think about it, Reason is kind of an alternative to Komplete...what with Thor, Kong, Subtractor, Malstrom, and the NN-XT, that's a pretty cool collection of instruments.

Can I do all the midi and automation in Sonar, send midi to Reason and get multi channel audio back to Sonar for processing? Basically treat Reason as a multitimbre synth plugin?

I think that's basically the point of ReWire. I don't have Reason though, and consequently very little use for ReWire. Might try it with Notion, didn't even consider that.

I use it with Notion with great results. I bought Mixbus 2 this year, but I haven't gotten a chance to try ReWire with it yet. I guess I should be thankful that I have been to busy to experiment too much this year. I had an LE version of Reason when I was doing a lot of hip-hop and rap sessions and it worked very well.

I bought Reason 2 probably ten years ago, and using it as a spare "synth rack" within SONAR via ReWire was all I ever did with it (hated the sequencer). As far as I can remember, stability was great and the features worked like they should. A bit of a hassle having to run two different apps and load/save two different session files though.
I've since found VST alternatives to all my favorite Reason synths/patches, so I don't even keep it installed anymore.

I tried using rewire with notation software...both Sibelius and Notion4. I had various levels of success with each. I work with picture and everyone in my work chain is setting things 48K. Last I tried Notion I had to use 44.1. Little things like that make Rewire, for me, more trouble than its worth. Shuttling back and forth between notation and DAWs requires way more labor than it should. (We are dealing with computers). Perhaps if you did an article on Rewire I might pick up a trick or two that would make a difference. Thanks!

So can I do this? (I've tried but can't get it to work) Rewire Notion to Send midi into Sonar. For example: I compose for a string Orchestra with Notion, set it up so that the midi out of Notion (say Violins 1) is inputted into a midi track in Sonar that triggers my corresponding Cinematic String's Kontact Violin 1 Patch. It would be really cool 'cause I could record key switching and CC midi data on the Sonar track and my notation would look right. Best of both worlds. I've tried with LoopBe Midi patching to no avail. Thanks!!!!
