How about a mix/remix competition?
Is this the kind of thing that would interest the members? Is it the kind of thing that Cakewalk would be interested in sponsoring for a prize or 2 or 3? Maybe in connection with Gibson/ Tascam. Craig A. Would you be interested in contributing material for remixing? Who would judge the competition? It would have to be by representatives from those contributing prizes? Maybe? These are just some of the points for consideration. I'm sure there's plenty more. Come on let's get some positive stuff happening. Even if Cakewalk can't do it maybe we could do it. Surely we have the resources in material and personnel here. Prizes don't have to be of huge value. Maybe Cakewalk could offer an increasing tier of member ship extension for 3rd to 1st place. It could either be a small thing confined to this forum - my preference or maybe a much bigger scale if Gibson / Tascam / KRK etc got involved. I just want to see something positive happening. The daily grind of dealing with problems needs a little refocus from time to time. Now don't take my previous comment as negative. Just want to be enthused about something. I need a project.

I like the idea! It would give me a project to hone my skills on and try out all the different tools. I think it would be best if Cakewalk sponsored it though. . . maybe they could give away some Prochannel modules or synths as the prizes. For me the main interest is just practicing something new.

I don't particularly want to do a remix at all. I want to do something to bring this community together a bit. Having a community that is always involved in problem solving is great but there are other things that can be done to create a greater sense of community. To a lot of people this place is a stop over on the way to somewhere else. For others it's an important social outlet. Some of us enjoy coming here, helping others and keeping the place going by our contributions. We've done it before and it was run through the Coffee House. I enjoy trying to create some enthusiasm.

What about a group track upload page where people donate tracks to the group page... the result could be many different mixes picking and choosing from a bunch of tracks.

Not really the purpose of this thread. I'm looking for a locally created and sponsored competition/project to get our local community enthused and involved. An individual can go and do whatever they want. But I'm not currently interested in promoting something on another website/forum.

I think this is an awesome idea as well. I checked out that ratethemix website and it has piqued my interest. It's definitely something I would consider doing as well. Remix, mix, one synth, stock plug-in contests would be awesome. I think it would add a lot to this forum.

Maybe you can ask whoever runs the Cakewalk blog to post info rather than setting up a new site? I say we go forward with discussing the details of it... For sure there will be interest once it's kicked off. Obviously it must be remixed in Sonar. To make it interesting I'd say limit it only to the instruments and effects bundled with Sonar.

Me too. I'd actually would try to complete it too.... Using only stock DAW/w plugins would really be interesting and might be educational. I would have to actually figure out how to not use tools like Fabfilter and Soundtoys. Maybe do like they have for cooking competitions, one category using only stock plug-ins, the 2nd category, anything goes....

This is similar to the informal one Dan posted on the blog around X-mas which required only use Blue Tubes stuff. I'd would really be interested in this, even if its not a full competition. A "community mix" would be cool as well - someone submits a project and the community mixes it together. Not sure exactly how it would work, but that could generate the community involvement mudgel is after.

I have zero problem with contributing tracks from one of my songs to see what people do with it. I collaborate a lot with a friend in England named Mark Longworth and it's always fun. We could make it a "flash mix" - I could post something using hightail.com, where you can download for a week or a certain number of downloads, whichever happens first. Make it quick, and keep moving along - then it's someone else's turn. I think only SONAR plug-ins is a good idea, but I think it might be best to strip out as much stuff as possible other than the tracks themselves. What would be even cooler is if people could replace/remove/add parts, not just remix. If anyone wants to take this further, people could go to my YouTube site and we could get a consensus on what people wanted to remix ("Hey, that song sucks, but I could make it really good!"). There are 15 pieces of original music in addition to the covers. Let's see what ideas other people have.

The remix idea I proposed was just a generic template for a way to describe some form musical communication between members. The main parts being involvement by numerous people to use their Sonar mixing skills for some sort of competetive purpose. It could be a central musical theme to which people contribute parts. Whatever.
I think there's a need to continue feeding a good vibe. It keeps the negativity at bay. I'm just keen to see things happening. We've had as many as 8 utilities developed by our members in the last year or so, yet a thread where all the information is posted with a single link for downloading them, has had barely 200 views and only a handful of comments.
Come on folks let's get with it.

What kind of remix contest? One in which all stems are provided and the contestant tries their hand at applying their own mix settings, or one in which a bare vocal part is provided and the contestant composes and arranges the rest of the music? Personally I find the latter far more interesting as it's a stronger judge of musical talent, not just engineering skills.

I'ed love to help out anyway I could, Not that this would meaning anything , But I own a small , very small , in fact tiny , almost non existent record label , but I have world wide distribution , And if the community likes I can press EDM or any type of genre music for release for FREE. although Ied love to be on the rmx end ..But I would sit out .. If this throws out any incentive I have no problem uploading the track and paying for it. And I would for go any profit and give the artist 100% of all sales. Would be nice to have a popular label but if you like you got me NP.. Throwing out some Ideas.. John
