How are you doing with X1?
Hello. I am a SONAR 5 user in Japan. I am reasonably satisfied with SONAR 5 but thinking upgrade from 5 English version to X1 Japanese version. According to a famous Japanese SONAR web site "ACTIVE SONAR", X1's reputation is very bad. "Unstable", "User Interface are completely different from 8/8.5 and difficult use", "Especially, MIDI tweaking is unusable" etc. I wonder how you feel about X1. It's a great innovation of SONAR or just a mistake. Sincerely, Jun Yamamoto http://homepage2.nifty.com/yamamoto_jun/e/

Hi Jun, I'm doing fairly well with X1. I do mostly audio, but I do use a lot of plugins and although I've had to deal with some annoying behavior from X1 (known bugs), for the most part I'm satisfied. I like the new interface a lot and love the ProChannel. Hopefully the X1b patch will be a big improvement. Do I feel that Cakewalk/Roland dropped the ball by releasing the program when they did? Absolutely! Hopefully they've learned their lesson. One thing I've noticed (although I'm not 100% sure) is that it seems like I can run more tracks and more plugins than with 8.5. Not sure if anyone else has experienced this. Sayonara

Thank you very much, pinguinotuerto. I am glad to hear you are fine with X1. Certainly I took note that it was not a perfectly successful leap from 8.5 to X1. I think I'd better wait X1b to see how they got the user responses to their recent launch. And also I must touch and feel the MIDI tweaking tricks of X1 at shops. Sincerely, Jun Yamamoto

I think if you're going from V5 to X1 you'll notice a huge difference. I find X1 great. Yes there are bugs, some that should never have made it through beta but that aside I like the new tools/workflow especially screensets. I'm not a fan of the new tool bar but it can be hidden instantly. TBH if you want to upgrade and stay with Sonar you haven't a lot of choice really. V8.5 is now as 'unsupported' as V5 in that there won't be any more updates. Might be worth waiting for a trial/demo version and trying it to see what you think, but the real question if you want to upgrade from V5 is - stay with Sonar or move to another DAW? simply going from V5 to V8.5 (assuming you can still buy it) is buying into a dead end. Having said that you'll notice a big difference betwenn V5 & V8.5 in the audio engine dept alone.

If you have been using S5 and are relatively happy I'd suggest you wait and see the feedback for X1b patch. Personally X1 is great for me, but obviously not everyone's experience is the same. Depending on your hardware you might get some instability, and it's probably a bit difficult to guess if you are one of the lucky ones or not. I am willing to bet that X1 will end up as reliable as any of the previous versions of Sonar though. Cakewalk has got a good history of fixing most of those kinds of issues - although some of the minor bugs hang over to new releases at times.

I'm running Sonar Producer 8.5 and based on what I've seen here, I'll be holding off until Sonar X2 to upgrade (even though the pro-channel is very tempting!).

...Good... yet less powerful than v8.5... ...a huge step back in terms of tools and features accessibility.... unfortunately, almost everything is now hidden in tons of menus and a silly Control Bar which cannot display tools all at once... unless you have a Movie Theater screen... in short, it was a powerhouse which actually stood out of the DAWs crowd, now it's (almost) just one among the "others"... I love SONAR "in itself", but X1 (in some ways...) betrayed my deep love... Hope things will change soon...

I like it alot. The new workflow suits how I work, and I haven't encountered any stability issues on my setup. I am however looking forward to X1b, as there are numerous bugs that are annoying. It's not enough to stop me from working - but it will be nice when they are fixed.

So far, so good. I'm a singer, so I probably don't push it as hard as a lot of users, but this weekend, from Friday til Sunday midnight, did about 18 hours on Sonar doing probably 200 takes of vocals, mostly me plus some other singers on harmonies, for a tribute album project. Never crashed, and people in New Jersey and Cali recieving files for approval/mixing/mastering thought it sounded great. So I'm happy with it for my needs. Michael Lee

I'm pretty satisfied with X1. Coming from 8.5, there was some change to get used to but it all feels natural now. I am never looking back. I run 20+ tracks (mostly soft-synths) and audio without any trouble. I've experienced bugs like everyone else but I know Cakewalk is onto it and I'm Looking forward to X1b. I love alot of the new features and the ones I used to miss, I've learned to live w/o them now (set nodes to selection for ex.) There is nothing that would keep me from using X1 or continue being a loyal Cakewalk client. It does everything I need to make incredible tracks, what more can I ask for? BTW, I am using a color theme from Sonarmods which I don't think I'll ever be able to live without. It makes the X1 experience just that much better!
