Thanks, Craig. These DLLs opened up the instruments and FX you listed in 3 of my other DAWs. Studio One isn't one of them.

I went and looked at the wrapper website and it looks kind of half baked.

I think I will just discard all of my Dx stuff. Very reluctantly.

I can't handle half done freeware stuff any more, but that's just me.

But I will also keep an eye on this because I will really miss my old plug ins

Cakewalk user since DOS3. Currently Platinum on a ASUS Z97 Sabertooth Mark 1 USB 3.1, i4790 3.6, 16 gigs memory, Windows 10 64, RME UCX using firewire.

There obviously are many factors to consider when deciding a long term approach to the ultimate demise of Sonar, but if DX plugins and instruments are important to you and you don't want to depend on questionable third party software, Reaper is one of the few DAWs that supports them natively.

A couple of questions to help clarify the method.  My DX effects and DXi instruments are in two different Cakewalk folders.

Did you put the two shells in both the Cakewalk Shared Plugins folder and also in the Shared DXi folder or just in one?  And then you just point the DAW scanner to both of them?

When I tried this, the Sonnitus effects showed up in Cubase, but not the DXi instruments?

Thanks yet again, Craig. I checked a few in Studio One. Sonitus:Compressor was the only so far not to work (though as a Robotizing FX it might have some use ).

“Beer is proof God loves us and wants us to be happy” is attributed to Benjamin Franklin perhaps in error, but the thought remains a worthy sentiment nonetheless.

I had the exact same result in Samplitude. I wonder why only the compressor does that...the rest work great, including the multiband compressor.

Sonitus didn't turn up in Mixcraft when i started, but now with these dll's in place it seems all but the compressor (distorted) work fine...

Thanks. They will be handy... too bad about the compressor...

Oh man! The Sonitus Compressor is a favorite go-to for transparent sweetening. Was so hopeful till I read that part. But still, thanks Mr. Anderton for the great tips!

I can confirm the wrapper works in Studio One.  However, as with others, the Sonitus Compressor did not work (just a buzzing noise that ends when the limiter button is turned off), and the Gate did not work either.  The rest worked fine.  Not all of the instrument-related ones worked through (one of the Strum ones, and some keyboard ones -- keyboard activity is shown but no movement on the plugin keyboards and their midi lights stay dark; not a major loss considering the other instruments I have).

I've managed to use the LP EQ and various Sonar effects in Studio one. But not the overloud plugins unfortunately nor the BT plugs.

Yeah, they're locked to SONAR, as is Breverb, Adaptive Limiter, ProChannel, and maybe one or two more I'm forgetting.

I got them working in Studio One 3.  Cubase is acting a little more stuburn, but I did get it also to work the DX effects okay.
Thanks for this thread!

@ ptheisen.
When i remove the dx wrappers, the dx plugins disappears from the plugin list, so it seems that  they are needed.

Re: How to Use Cakewalk DX and DXi in Studio One! Really! 2017/11/28 15:46:59 (permalink)
My guess about the compressor and gate not working via the wrapper is that these are the two plugins that have potential side-chaining functionality, and the wrapper does not deal with it gracefully.

Interestingly, these same two plugins do NOT appear in Reaper, which does handle all the other DX plugins "natively". I'm now thinking that Reaper is also using the same (or a very similar) wrapper behind the scenes, and adds a little bit of logic to filter out the two plugins that it knows won't work properly.

Re: How to Use Cakewalk DX and DXi in Studio One! Really! 2017/11/28 18:28:01 (permalink)
This thread got me to thinking - the xlutop stuff was associated with a product they used to make called Chainer, the guts of which they eventually gave away. That triggered a memory of other FX chain tools that could host DX(i) plugs and then themselves appear as VST(i) plugs. I never got too far into that, as SONAR supports DX(i) natively and has great routing already, not to mention how they later introduced FX chains of their own. But it could be worth trying other wrappers/routers/racks to see if they work better with rogue DX plugs like Sonitus Compressor & Gate (and/or others).

I did some digging and found these, though there may be others:

vb-audio DxRack
http://vb-audio.pagesperso-orange.fr/us/products/dxrack/dxrack.htm

Patchwork (Blue Cat Audio)
https://www.bluecataudio.com/Products/Product_PatchWork/
(do not explicitly say that DX is hosted, but it is listed as one of the contained technology standards)

Console
http://console.jp/en/index.html

Not sure of the current state of these... some are a bit long in the tooth, but may still work, at least as well as the xlutop stuff.

I still need to get around to obtaining a license of SO and getting up to speed on it. But in the meantime if anyone has the time & energy to try any of these please have at it and let us all know!!

Will those files to download work on Sonar X3?  Because I loved TTS and I could never use it since X1 I think.  Somebody told me it does't work with 88,2 sample rate...

This works in Samplitude Pro X3. They all show up, they all work -- except for the Sonitus Compressor. Output is garbled and distorted for that one, no idea why.

Yep, for me too. That's the one I use the most. Oh well...

By the way, MIDI FX work too. If you copy the mfxshell.x64.dll as well, you can insert Sonar's midi fx. In Studio One the patcher didn't seem to have a midi-out mapping, so the only useful one was Chord Analyzer (which, by the way, I am shocked I only just discovered!!!)

And in FL Studio as well

Where I could get most of the others working too, although the seemed a bit fragile:

1. install mfxshell.x64.dll
2. open plugin manager and rescan
3. filter plugins by "cakewalk" and check the check boxes for each plugin. Close the manager.
4. now, when you open the plugin picker (F8) you should see them all.

When you insert them into a patcher, the first thing you need to do is go to the plugin properties (for the MFX, not the patcher) and set the midi input and output channels to 0. It is only then that the green input button will appear. Otherwise, you won't be able to route to them.
