How to Use Cakewalk DX and DXi in Studio One! Really!

I haven't tested this extensively, but so far very good! This works with the Sonitus effects, 64-bit DXi instruments, the Cakewalk Creative Suite effects, etc. As a bonus, if you have a Sony product like Vegas installed, its DX plug-ins show up too.

So here's the deal...this assumes a 64-bit OS and 64-bit Studio One Professional.

1. Go to https://www.xlutop.com/buzz/zip/
2. Download the zip file dxshell_v1.0.4b.zip
3. Extract it.
4. Copy the files dxshell.x64.dll and dxishell.64x.dll to the folder where Studio One looks for VST plug-ins.

That's pretty much it...open Studio One, and you'll see all the 64-bit DX and DXi plug-ins...this includes Groove Player, Cyclone, SFZ, Z3TA+, PSYN II, and...wait for it...the TTS-1!

This works in Samplitude Pro X3. They all show up, they all work -- except for the Sonitus Compressor. Output is garbled and distorted for that one, no idea why. But so far, the other Sonitus ones I've tested all work fine - Reverb, Phaser, Multiband, Delay...

No, these are from 2012 and are intended for any programs that work with wrappers. That included Cubase at the time, so presumably they still work.

The dx to vst wrappers have been around a long time. They are not host specific. I do not think it is a good idea to rely on this solution. It is similar to relying on bridging software to run 32bit plug-ins in 64bit hosts. It just buys time while looking for replacements.

Just an additional note to make sure you don't get tripped up. Make sure that Studio One is scanning the proper paths to the plugs (if you have any custom locations you have set up - another drive for instance). In Studio One, go to the Studio One menu, click Options, then click the Locations tab. From the popup click Instrument Library and add any paths. After you are done, click OK. You will need to restart SO to have it scan any new paths you should see them in the SO browser.
Take care,

I also like to use the Sony Volume control for track automation of gain.

From athread at K*R (https://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=177538#p2513062) :

"last updated on 08-Mar-2012
-x64 versions added

There are basically three vst plugins, dxshell.dll, dxishell.dll and mfxshell.dll, these vsts are non-standard vsts, they are so-called shell vsts like the vsts known from Waves. Unfortunately this means that only a few hosts are able to use these wrappers directly. Some hosts that are supporting shell vsts directly:

Cubase SX,
Tracktion,
Reaper,
Temper,
Renoise,
Buzz,
Aodix,
Vsthost"

I'm off to see the Wibble, the wonderful Wibble of Wobble

I tried it in Mixcraft, I followed Anderton`s procedure and copied into Mixcraft VST folder.

Most of the Sonitus fx worked fine, two of them had a distorted sound.
TTS-1 also seemed to work, but Pentagon made it crash.

This has just been a quick test.

Not sure if this is relevant to this thread, but I will mention it anyway considering the circumstances with the software.

If you use Sonar Pro, while it is not mentioned that it has following 3 plugins, by making a simple change to the folder name and .dll files you can use these in Sonar Pro. Actually a MOD posted this information a while back after there was a problem with these plugins not showing up in Sonar Platinum for a user and that's where this information comes from.

These 3 plug ins.

TL-64 Tube Leveler
VX-64 Vocal Strip
PX-64 Percussion Strip

Simply go to the folder :   C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\Shared Utilities\Internal

And rename the Folders and the .dll files in them with "Original_" without the quotes obviously.

Example Folder : Original_StPX64        DLL Contained in that folder : Original_StPX6464

Do this for : StTL64   ,   StPX64  , StVX64,  and the .DLL files in those 3 folders, just add "Original_", after doing that and scanning your VST's you will find those 3 plug ins available and fully functional in Sonar Pro.

I have no idea if they will work in another daw, but if your using Sonar pro they will work for it I know because I have Sonar Pro.

Good luck all!

Dell XPS 8700, 16GB's Ram, Sonar Platinum.

This doesn't seem to work with V-Vocal

I really have to start accepting default file locations when I'm installing stuff. It took me an hour to find all the plugin folders from five previous installations of SONAR. The good news is most of it seemed to work. At least the plugins did appear in the Studio One browser. Haven't had time to actually use them.

PS: I have almost never used V-Vocal, but when I did I kind of liked it. But so far I haven't been able to make it appear in S1. Anybody know why not?

The web page below seems to indicate that Mixcraft should work natively with DX plugins. Are you saying that DX plugins did not work in Mixcraft prior to doing the procedure that Craig posted?

Sorry, Mr. Noize. I didn't mean to point my comment at you. I was talking about getting Cakewalk bundled plugins working with other DAWs, which is what the original post was about.

No need to say Sorry, I was just letting everyone know there was a method to activate those plug ins in Sonar Pro, and the way I found out about it was here on the forums from a Mod talking about those plug ins not showing up in an earlier version of Sonar Platinum.

That forum conversation at the time was meant for Platinum users. But at the time they were having problems with that versions plug ins NOT SHOWING up in scans, so the fix was to change the name and it was posted here in the forums. I found that it worked with Sonar PRo after reading that thread, and all the sudden those 3 plug in's work with Sonar Pro.

Thought I would mention it, because if your still using Sonar Pro, considering the circumstances, it might be worth doing.

As for me, I just record my own music, I am not a pro studio, but I have the means to do so with Sonar Pro..

I will continue to use Sonar Pro as long as I can and am not abandoning ship. But I don't blame anyone for doing so, especially if they are running a pro studio using Cakewalk software because operating systems update frequently using Windows software and such things.

The fact that cakewalk started supporting Mac's, I am left to wonder if Gibson wasn't thinking that the support cost would double or maybe more because of that fact.

Oh well, those are my thoughts.

Best wishes! And happy Holidays!

Bobby
