paulo Well, If the very definition of curmudgeon is ...." a person thinks that LOTR is a load of unnecessarily long-winded fairytale bollocks " then yes, yes I am and that's no bad thing IMO.
I'd say one of the definitions is someone who almost always appears on a forum thread to tell someone else that what they like is bollocks, especially if it's popular... Out of interest, what DO you like?
I like plenty of stuff and I've also contributed to threads about such things, but if people choose to overlook that because sometimes my opinion of something they like is not the same as theirs, then what can you do? Unfortunately, I keep forgetting that only agreeing with everyone is allowed these days. You know that popular doesn't always equal good, right ?

See that VHS boxed set of all the Police Academy movies? That's your favourite thing, that is.

jamesg1213 Love GoT. 'Battle of The Bastards' from the last season was jaw dropping.
One of the best battle scenes I've ever seen. Big screen movie battles aren't as dramatic, intense and visual as the Battle of the Bastards.
bitflipper I guess I'm gonna have to buy the DVD set after this season. There are so many characters I've lost the thread of the story and have to watch it again with a guide to tell me who's who. "What?!? he's dead?" "Oh, he came back to life?!? WTF?" Still, even if there isn't enough nudity for you it's got frickin' DRAGONS, man!
Yeah, that's my only issue with the story...bringing select folks back from the dead. Kind of ruins the drama around the story and characters when you know, if the author simply wants to, they can arrange for a witch or someone nearby to do a silly ritual and bring them back. Unnecessary and mostly stupid. It proves the writer had no imagination left. I love GRRM, but come on...he can do better than writing himself into a corner and then pulling a zombie card. But what the hell, right? It's a great show anyways, and nothing like it on TV or the movies. Martin truly does believe in the concept that villains are merely heroes to the other side, and vice versa. He's written a clinic on it, here.
The whole resurrection of JS was kinda lame, but considering the makeup of the hordes marching down from the north it's not that far-fetched in the context of the story.

It's hard to predict, but it might turn out to have been a necessary plot element from the standpoint of his claim to the throne.

Could be, I suppose. I wish we had a spoiler tag ... I could end the whole thing in four episodes: - Cersei and Dany get married to join forces - Cersei and Dany consummate the marriage - Cersei and Dany defeat the north-of-the-wall horde - Cersei and Dany rule forever more

Hi, All in all, the first episode this season is merely a pickup of all the stories so far, and in the next few chapters we will find which stories live or die. In many ways, the opening gave in to try and help the audience see/find the many stories that otherwise might not have made too much sense on their own. Personally, like the previous seasons, I did not need to see a whole reason for it all on this episode other than the "delicious" take of Aria's on the episode, up to and including her telling her new friends ... "to kill a queen" ... that got all of them a big laugh! Best moment of the whole thing! The whole thing makes a whole lot more sense if you get to watch it from the start. Since it is 6 seasons, and a good 60 hours ... you might have to look at things later, since the new ones are here, but watching the new stuff without knowing the background, is a bit of an empty story ... for my tastes. If anything, watch all 10 episodes of the 6th Season, so you get a fairly good primer to the new season, although the story that follows ARIA goes all the way back to the very first SEASON of the show, and her involvement on what she does now. When we see her in that opening scene ... which had me going ... WHAT? ... until she pulled her mask off! Some things in this episode. Jorah is still alive (hand in the jail cell), and my guess is that Samm might try and find a cure for him? The whole of Dany going up to the castle was overblown, and makes us think that she will be the Queen of the 7 kingdoms. Jon Snow is trying to sound like a great leader, not sure it will hold. Too many doubts around. Cersei looks kinda lost and alone, and it might be a hint that she will become even more fierce, though she has lost way too much along the way to be able to take it to a finish line. Little finger is still hoping to be a part of the story ... good luck! Sansa, is still a "stupid little girl" and her comments to Snow are petulant, even though she makes a good point ... but she misses on the bigger point of it all! I'm hoping that the whole season is not wasted on one war or two ... the whole thing with the undead on the north is getting boring and pathetic ... and not necessary, though it makes a suggestion that Jon Snow and his folks can not possibly fight for anything ... else, other than the Winter enemies they already have. Do make some time to watch the early stuff ... the first season is quite good all the way through. I do not have a special favorite of the 6 previous seasons, but do think that the mis-use of the Red Woman in the whole story (someone could have gained better insight into her history and abilities ... instead of wasting her on superstition!) All in all ... a very good show. Btw, do a search on the net for the characters for GoT ... and check out the listing and the quality ... almost all of the top ten, are top actors that have won a heck of a lot of accolades all over England, and it shows ... their show has outstanding acting all the way through it.

Right on. You have good taste! I'm pretty much the exact same way. If it's popular, I back away and give it some time and let it prove itself before I give it a try. I resisted GoT for three seasons, then gave it a shot because I had heard what happens to some major characters at the end of the first season and how the story takes off. Hey, if an author - and major cable network - is willing to do that, then you know you're in honest hands. A good, rich, epic story that feels relatively organic and fills you with dread every time one of your favorite characters faces danger.

The GoT crew certainly isn't afraid of killing off popular characters. And MoD's hair gets better every season too!
