If I recall correctly one can buy an "invisible" marker pen. You use it to write your post code etc. on your stuff. This shows up under ultraviolet light. I will have to look onto it.

Yep.  I remember having one for use on my car about 25 years ago.

The system I would like is one where the cameras don't look like cameras (preferably something like smoke alarms), have battery backup (but can be hardwired too) and send their images over WiFi to an address I can view from any internet connected computer.  They usually only record when movement is detected so it doesn't chew up a lot of dead air and disk space.  Used in conjunction with a motion operated light should be pretty effective and not something easily dealt with by thieves.   Heck, I might put up a cheap, fake camera so they can get a good laugh and relax thinking that was my entire security system.  Makes it easier to identify the perps because they probably won't try to hide then.

Another thought. Did you mention this at your gig. If not it may be worth doing so at the next. Someone may have heard of persons offering instruments on the cheap.

At the glacial rate the insurance company is moving, it could be a month before the claim gets settled. Meanwhile, I have commitments with 2 bands to keep, so I took a leap of faith and ordered a new synth. The good news it's a frickin' awesome instrument. Bad news is I don't know where I'll store it when it gets here.

bit,
find someone you trust that works at a musical instrument sales company,
pay them a small fee to write up a list of your equipment and their replacement worth.
even finished transactions on ebay is legit.

i had to do this when i lost a bunch of stuff in a house flood back in '08.

When I bought my last instrument the dealer sent me a value of worth to give to my insurance company as a rider on my main policy. They should do this for you. It's a little extra but probably worth it to get it replaced in the event of a fire or break in.
I've got cameras all around my property and  cameras inside. I told myself that it might be overkill since the take on my place wouldn't make anyone rich, but after reading this I'm glad I did it.

Re: I've been robbed 2016/05/10 13:17:56 (permalink)
Much of the stuff came from Sweetwater, which lets you download PDFs for everything you ever bought there. Musician's Friend has no such feature, and I never created an account at Zzounds, so I'm going through old credit card statements for proof of purchase. The local music store was able to print receipts for recently-bought amplifiers and is digging out files for me on things I bought before they had a proper database.

Sadly, the company I bought my ADAMs from has gone out of business. I have tracked down one of its principals who now works for another store and emailed him to see if the owners still have sales records. Sheesh. Then there's the stuff I bought off Craigslist - those will be writeoffs.

Just trying to remember everything that was in my cord bag, and where I got them, is a daunting task. Pedals, stompboxes, a MIDI merger, microphone, gobs of cables.

Let this be a lesson to you all. Take photos of ALL your gear and serial numbers, dig out your receipts and stash all that information somewhere secure. Do it now.

Just curious if you have checked with the police to see if they have made any progress (stay on them to try to get them to do something)?

That's a bit concerning about needing receipts now.  While in the past they have requested receipts if I had them, they did not require them. Luckily, it's been some years since I had to go through that process though.

I have left voicemail messages and sent emails to the local PD. They have not responded. Next step, I guess, is to march into the police station and make a nuisance of myself. I haven't done that yet because I don't want to come across as a crank. But dammit, this past week I HAVE been feeling extremely cranky. And I'm old enough to get away with it.

Sure, they've got more important things to do than chase down my SONAR projects. But sheesh, I showed them where the crooks live, showed them the evidence. You'd think they'd deal with it just to add an easy win to their scorecard.

Now the insurance company is a whole 'nother source of frustration. I've been dutifully paying my premiums for 40 years. Now, for them to demand receipts for everything is effectively saying thanks for all the money, now f*ck off. It doesn't look like I'll be able to find a receipt for the most-expensive items on the list, my studio monitors.

Cranky, indeed.

I have heard it said that often taking just one crim off the streets can reduce a town's crime rate by a major amount as most of the crime is committed by the same small group of people. So you would think going for the easy one would really pay off. They catch them for one thing and many others come to light. If US law enforcement is driven by statistics, targets and metrics like it is in the UK you would think this would gee them up a bit.

In English law a defendant can ask "for other crimes to be taken into consideration" when being tried, it’s not uncommon to see reports where there a very large number of these. They have to be the same type of offence, they escape prosecution for the offences but they are considered in sentencing saving an awful lot of time for the courts.

A glimmer of light...my insurance company says they will accept my estimates in lieu of receipts. They will apply depreciation, but I can submit receipts for the replacement gear and they'll cover the difference. So I am no longer bad-mouthing USAA...at least not yet. And I'll now go ahead and pay my premium, which just happens to be sitting here on my desk.

Tomorrow I'll go to the police station and try to interest someone - anyone - in my case.

In other good news, I got my security camera working again. Turns out their software was not compatible with 64-bit operating systems, but I was able to find third-party software that worked.

Next up, replacing my door. Unfortunately, it's an odd size that had to be special-ordered and will take 18 days to arrive. In the meantime the first of my replacement gear will have arrived, so I will be sleeping with it as suggested by Craig.

Good to hear about the insurance. That is the same process they had me do. I listed all the model#'s and the serials I had, along with the estimates, and then submitted receipts for equipment that was replaced.

As someone said, perhaps the police are acting but just keeping it quiet. At least, I hope so...

Dave I'm so sorry to hear about this.

I can only imagine the devastation you're feeling and I just hope they catch the goddam scumbags!

Gear is gear and can be replaced with relative ease, but to lose all your project data. Ah, it doesn't bear thinking about.

It's certainly focussed my mind on my own security/backup arrangements.

The empathy from this thread has been a welcome consolation, so a sincere thanks goes out to everybody who offered advice, sympathy, encouragement, and even offers of equipment. This kind of tragedy strikes a chord (not Am, I think it's D#dim) among musicians, any of whom can imagine themselves in my position.

Think of all the times you momentarily left your van unattended while packing out from a gig. Or how many times you trusted a venue to keep your gear overnight, or checked an instrument into airline baggage, or left your stuff at home when you left town. Or left your gear in your car while you went to eat at some sketchy truckstop diner en route to a gig. How many times have you lucked out?

If I sound paranoid, it's because I am. Paranoid and angry.

Fortunately, nobody has crossed me during this past week; I genuinely fear hurting someone. Me, the easy-going pacifist. Those asshats next door have undone a decade of self-prescribed LSD therapy in the 60's. Love thy neighbor? Ain't happenin' this week.

I've been on a weekly routine of swapping out rotational hard disk backups at my local bank's safety deposit box for quite some time. I had thought I was somewhat crazy doing that. I'm glad that's my established routine after hearing of Dave's awful situation. I had been motivated more out of fear of something like fire. Or just, you never know what could happen.

Two internal 2TB SSDs laptop stuffed with Larry's deals and awesome tools. Studio One is the cat's meow as a DAW now that I've migrated off of Sonar. Using BandLab Cakewalk just to grab old files when migrating songs.

I still would have contacted a news crew (they love this type of story - sick bastages).  With everyone around you hearing about the theft it might give the police more motivation to resolve the case.  I'd also let the police know that you're not a guy who has lost some "possessions" that are easily replaced with insurance money.  Make them realize that most of your life over the last ten years as well as many items that insurance won't replace were lost.

I agree, it's the classic "human interest" story that local news loves. Artist loses life's work in burglary. It's just the kind of publicity you need to get people looking out for your gear.

Or the kind of publicity that draws more miscreants to my doorstep! One of the reasons I'd become complacent is that few people knew what I did in my garage. Unfortunately, those few included my immediate neighbors.

Two days ago I left yet another message with the PD, but this time I actually got a call back. It wasn't a detective or a supervisor. Just a guy sitting at a desk, but to his credit he did everything he could without actually getting up from his chair. He found the neighbor's address via Google Earth. But he did promise to update the case file with the new information.

When I feel bummed, I just pull up one of the many YouTube videos on the Kronos and let the G.A.S. symptoms overwhelm my rotten attitude. It arrives tomorrow. I have no amps, but the thieves did leave me some headphones. There's got to be a pony in here somewhere!

man, it's really a sick world when thieves can do this and the police can't/won't do anything about it because it's not high priority for them.

Hoping you find a little peace tomorrow when your Kronos arrives!
