The police throughout Washington tend to only do revenue-producing tasks. An rarely known fact is that some of the judges (at least down here in Clark County) own some of the jails so it's in their best interest to put people into them and get the federal benefit for themselves. DUI's (including false ones) are very high around here. Even though I had all the evidence in the world that a renter I evicted stole things, destroyed things and vandalized several other items, the police did next-to-nothing. Cost me a lot of money I really couldn't afford.

lol. I know you are going through too much right now but I couldn't help but laugh at that one... It is unfortunate that it is so true! Congrats on the Kronos. Any particular reason for that one? I ask because I'm looking at getting something similar and Yamaha has been bombarding me with Montage spam. Other than youtube videos I know little about either or how they compare.

Why the Kronos? I am attempting to replace two instruments with one. Kronos has great pianos and electric pianos, the primary role my MO8 played. It also includes the CX-3 engine for organ. When I play out live, it's 50% organ and 50% acoustic and electric pianos. My hope is that the Kronos can fill both roles, as it's quite versatile. Sound-wise, that'll be no problem. What I'll miss is the light-touch waterfall keys of a dedicated organ. Kronos is the newest incarnation of the OASYS, which in turn grew out of the Triton Extreme. The OASYS was one of those super-synths you'd read about some overpaid rock star buying two of, but most of us could never justify the $8K price tag. Kronos does everything OASYS did and more, but sells for far less. I got the 73-key version, which was about $3800 after adding pedals and case. Still expensive, but it's replacing two instruments that together cost about the same. Kronos is many synths in one. Nine, to be exact. Pretty much every synth that Korg has ever made is in there, so the range of sounds is extraordinary, from bread 'n butter pianos and strings to rich pads, synth leads and out-there SFX. It's also a sampler, sequencer, audio interface and DAW. I can't imagine any features they might have left out. Unlike similar instruments, e.g. the Nord Stage 2, it has a large storage capacity (62 GB), making large sample libraries feasible. The main piano patch is individually sampled for each key, 8 velocity layers, and no looping (each note naturally decays for up to 20 seconds). It sounds better than anything I had for Kontakt. But I could import a Kontakt library if I wanted to. Some users have imported Omnisphere patches. It has a great UI for live performance (yay!). An 8" color LCD touchscreen with a set list / song list view lets you define 16 instruments/combis/sequences per page (up to 128 set lists total), and include notes/lyrics for each one. Finally, something I can work on a darkened stage without a flashlight! The Kronos was not a frivolous choice. Sitting here with zero musical instruments to my name, I've had nothing to do but research. I made a long list of potential replacements, watched a lot of YouTube demos and read synth-oriented forums. I won't know for sure until later today, but I'm fairly confident I made the best possible choice.

On a cheerier note, my Kronos arrived last Saturday and I have spent the past 3 days learning how to program the thing. Sheesh, it's pretty deep. The organ is good enough to put off replacing my Hammond, although the Leslie emulation isn't in the same league as my Ventilator was, so I'll be getting another Vent. Still waiting for the new door, which had to be custom made. I put a padlock on the old one in hopes that would at least require more noise to break in. I have the security camera going again, which means I wake up several times a night and feel compelled to check it! The motion-sensor alarms are also working now, which means I often get blasted when I come in after forgetting about them. I have access to some non-working cameras. I'll mount those around the house until I can afford real ones. I also plan to install a driveway sensor and add an opener to my gate plus a light down there. That means laying 150' of underground conduit, a major chore. Jeez, I'm getting pissed off all over again, thinking about what this is going to cost me.

Not to fan paranoia, but you might consider not posting too many details of your security systems on line. I come from the school that it's better to just say that I've taken a number of measures - some quite obvious, but some not so obvious - to protect myself. [EDIT: removed something I dumbly quoted ]

Consider UF (underground feeder) cable. You still have to trench but it does not need conduit. May save you some bucks...

I could use underground cable, but I need to run extra wires for sensors, gate opener, camera and intercom, in addition to power. So I'd planned on renting a trencher and laying 1" gray PVC about 18" down. That way I can pull twisted pairs for the other stuff, even throw in a few extra pairs for anything I think of down the road. And some CAT-5 for the camera. Some good news today: the insurance company is sending me a check! Only $6,800 on $15,000 worth of stuff after depreciation and deductible. But I can later amend the claim after I've replaced the gear, send them receipts for the new stuff and they'll pay the difference. So in the end, it looks like I'll be able to replace nearly everything if I'm a prudent shopper. I just have to convince them that the Korg Kronos is replacing two keyboards. So I'll be going to the music store for a couple amplifiers today. The same ones I had before, Roland KC-350s. They're reasonably light and two of them will handle most venues I play in. Those and some cables and I'm makin' noise again!

Dave, I'm just catching up to this. So sorry for your loss man! I had this happen to me about 3 and a half years ago. People upstairs robbed me as they were being evicted. I came home after working a long day (was working long shifts all that week) and everything was gone. I had to borrow my work laptop to finish a paper for my college class, but they actually left my 12" speakers (I guess they couldn't carry them) and didn't touch my back ups. Took everything right through the window. I didn't have renters insurance or anything. THAT was tough... I also understand how frustrating the police can be (they were virtually nonexistent for my situation). To this day, nothing. Thank God I've been able to start over. And it looks like you are (however slow it may be) as well. Stay strong friend.

Yeah, it's really hard to stay positive about the police... I once had a truck stolen. They never recovered it, no convictions or anything. About 3 months after reporting it stolen, the police called asking if I had found it. True story! Unfortunately, it was a total loss as I only had liability insurance.

Well, if they were to recover it now, I'd be subject to a double-whammy, because I'd have to reimburse the insurance company for the replacement gear. It's a no-win situation, and I don't recommend it. That said, I have to say it's been inspiring musically. I think about how I once took all this stuff for granted, how many times I plopped onto the couch and watched TV when I could have been making music. Go without any musical instruments for a while, and no DAW - makes you appreciate how important those things are to a happy life. But the emotional scars will not heal as quickly. I had to leave the house today for a dental appointment, and was so stressed I considered cancelling. I still wake up several times a night and obsessively watch my security camera. And I am still angry. I'm not an angry person, and it's an unpleasantly strange feeling. Trying to stay positive, looking forward to this weekend's gig, the first with my new synth. Also, I have a new stage mike that doesn't smell like last year's spit, so that's good.

I had a small taste of that after Hurricane Sandy when I was without power for a week. I'd sit reading books by candlelight fantasizing about how great it was to able to sit in front of Sonar and make music. When the power came back on the first thing I did was fire Sonar up and get cracking on the project I'd been thinking about all week. Just sitting there for that first hour, with two screens blazing and lots of plugins open and every light in the apartment on and a nice hot steaming cup of home brewed coffee - wow. I felt like I'd been transported into the future. Of course the novelty wore off after the first hour and I was cursing X2 again

So... as you replace your gear.... scan the receipts and take video of the gear including close up of the serial numbers..... save the files in the cloud.... post them into a dropbox folder that is private. That way, you have the proof, and it's in a safe place..... just don't forget your access codes to the file.

I am documenting everything, photographing everything and keeping that information separate from the office/studio. I'll be much better prepared next time - assuming I can still afford insurance after this. All my preparation had been geared toward equipment failure. Software and projects were diligently backed up regularly, usually several times a day. I was more concerned about hard drive failure than theft. Priorities have changed. I'm planning on covering the whole house and yard with security cameras. A month ago, that would have been an unjustifiable expense. It's still money I can't spare, but it has to be done. I've even taken a step I never thought I would: I have invited my daughter and her two kids to move in with me. They'll pay rent and utilities so I can better afford things like cameras and alarms. Did I want to sacrifice my peace and quiet? Hell, no. Those burglars have no idea the extent to which they've changed my life. Happy thoughts, happy thoughts...I'll pick up my keyboard amplifiers today. That will bring total expenditures to $5,500 so far, leaving just $1,300 from the settlement and still no computer, monitors, effects, cables or microphones. All those things will be paid for out of pocket. Then I'll repeat the claims process in hopes the insurance will make up the difference. By the time I'm fully re-equipped I'll be out a few grand, not counting security expenses. So my 2003 vehicle will have to keep running for awhile longer, as well as my refrigerator that constantly blinks an over-temp warning. Happy thoughts...first gig with the new keyboard this Friday! I'll earn a whole 50 dollars for it, enough to cover two instrument cables. But it's not about the money, as you all know. As the old joke goes, a musician is defined as somebody who loads $5,000 worth of equipment into a $500 car to go to a $50 gig. We do it to nourish the soul, not to make money.

Meanwhile, I have commitments with 2 bands to keep, so I took a leap of faith and ordered a new synth. The good news it's a frickin' awesome instrument. Bad news is I don't know where I'll store it when it gets here.
