Off the top of my head

Air Music Technology gives you ( I think a month ) to download your products . Then there is  a fee to start an extended period of time / window for future downloads ( longer than  a month )

I just checked the Air Music Tech links that I received from Plugin Boutique over 6 months ago, and they still seem to be active.  But I have already downloaded everything and archived anyway.  Don't really know how long to expect them to work.  The links all point to various path names at "cdn.inmusicbrands.com/air/..."

That seems to be good news on one level . I remember looking at my receipt at the time of purchase and I saw there was a limited time frame to download all my stuff ...
That purchase tipped the scales at some crazy gigabyte number  ..
I didn't have the best download speed and I had worry's that I would never get my stuff . Downloading all of the contents of my purchase was just like trying to stuff a one hundred forty five pound woman into a one hundred and fifteen pound dress

Let's see what happens once the sale is finally over

One of the reasons I didn't buy the 0mnisphere 2 upgrade.......USB drive was a rip off and it was a large d/l that seemed prone to failure at the time IIRC, but subsequent d/l's after the first were subject to charges.

Stuff like this is why cracked software continues to be popular. But you can't blame them. Just look at bank service charges. I think they teach these tactics in business schools.

LOL!!! Thanks. that was a Friday flashback for sure, straight out of 1987 or so ...

I remember when we hooked up the first T-1 in our office in the mid-80's, and we all stood around and stared at it,  impressed that it could fit the equivalent of 24 analog lines at 56Kbps onto one set of wires.

Good thing that these days we have access to consumer broadband that is typically at least 10 times as fast as a T-1 line.  And on our private networks, our Ethernet is either 100 Mbps or maybe Gigabit, and our Wi-Fi is at least 150-300 Mbps!

The content delivery networks that major companies distribute digital content from today, have massive bandwidth pipelines connected to their server clouds.  Bandwidth should not be an issue anymore!

DAW: CbB; Sonar Platinum, and others ...

Hey, laugh all you want.  I get 4Mbps down on a good day.  THAT is the reason I triple backup large downloads.  It's NOT the $10 6 mos or more from now.

I have multiple external drives with full installer histories (I mean I have ibackups of all my installers) on these three different drives. One drive is not at my home in case of any home event.

I can sleep peacefully this way. No worries.

I don't get these sorts of things. Bandwidth is dirt cheap in general. I get that I use cheap hosting but still I pay 25 bucks a year and have order of magnitude three quarters of a million downloads a year. It just doesn't cost that much.
Of course I wonder the same about VI-control's fundraiserers. What does it cost to run a message board?

I think the download fee use to be higher like $29.  I remember if you needed to download Kirk Hunter Diamond, you could email and get the links again. Now you just go the your account.  I can download my VSL from their site. EW just keep a copy of the links.  NI you can download everything going back to Komplete 7.

I appreciate all the advice about backing up libraries, LOL. I did back everything up! Diligently. Problem is, the thieves stole the external backup drive, too.

I had been preparing against hard drive failure, which I'd deemed the most likely threat. I never considering burglary as a possibility, but I do now! The new backup drive gets locked up separately and is never left connected to the computer.

I remember. Could be worse if you lost an iLok.

ILok is for the developers. Everything gets pirated unless it is heavily protected. The dongles are much harder to crack. I'm not an ILok fan, but I do understand the reasons. Shoot even my stuff gets 'pirated' and its free.

Hi. I noticed yesterday when in "Custom Shop" that I needed to re download "The Grid", and was asked to pay 9.99$ to do it.
That's enough for me not to bother doing it just out of principal.

@Zargg
I got that notice a few weeks ago about my expansion library (can't recall which one) had expired and would cost, but it was still there and I had the zip to reinstall it, anyway.

When I posted this on the IK forum, I was told only my option to download it for free had expired. That's when I remembered that IK "got" me in the habit of saving all my exe. in 2 other drives.

I've come to think of it as "use tax"! LOL

A note regarding Spectrasonics...if you buy from a third party you'll get your library on a USB drive, but if you buy from Spectrasonics directly it'll be a download. Not only that, the third party's price will usually be $20 or so lower. Pay a little less and your backup's already done.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

I'm in the process of building a new DAW and I'm really trying to approach this from a project management perspective. I am documenting everything I have installed in my existing DAW and making notes as to whether or not I have the installers (I save them to 2 different hard drives) and what I need to address from a license perspective. Honestly, the iLok stuff is the least of my problems (as is Waves since I installed licenses on a USB key) because I just plug the iLok/USB key in the new machine. Plugin Alliance lets you release licenses as does Toontrack, so those should be the next easiest. But I have a lot of software (Ableton Live included) that are nebulous on the number of installs and may require contacting the company. However, I probably won't catch them all ahead of time and will run into issues as they come up.

I sort of like how the dongle addresses the licensing for me...
