Is there an easy and reproducible recipe for a crash, preferably starting from a blank project?

For me, it's easy and reproducible. All I have to do is 1) reboot the machine and 2) insert CA-2A into an FX bin (or open a project that already contains CA-2A in an FX bin).

Not everyone's experiencing the same symptoms, though. For example, I have no problem doing a scan.

I'm at my workstation and have just followed the above steps but no crash.

could the analytics be helpful here? identify differences between the crashes and crash-nots?

(FWIW) Plugin count significantly increased after update.  Discovered the "C:\Program Files (x86)\Cakewalk\Vstplugins" had been added to VST scan path after update.  Deleted path, rescanned, plug count as expected.

this came in with the newbie feature which "helps" defining first settings. on the machine where I did not click it away, it messed with my VST paths and brought back all excluded 32 bit plugs.

I don't like that at all - and it's certainly not going to do any good to improve newbie Sonar stability worldwide.

So I'm up at the studio and this rig crashed as soon as I tried to open a project. When I restart Sonar immediately after the crash, no reboot, it tells me I don't have audio devices. On second attempt (after a reboot) I checked that the audio devices were there before attempting to open a project - I picked a random project unrelated to the first and it crashed as well, then as before it would start but tell me I didn't have audio devices. This computer is on 2016.10 since its non-early release and has had the latest windows update since 11/9/2016. So strange this all happened at once and this computer is rarely online.
Could it be an interface update? Roland doesn't really tell you when it updates apparently

So I rebooted and start sonar, check for audio devices, everything looks fine. start a new blank project and it does let me. First thing I masochistically do is open the pro channel and insert ca-2a and crash! I think I'm going to devote this week to practicing instruments and keep an eye on the forum...

I've had several problems since the update.

1. In one project, I was using Session Drummer for a click track (don't want to argue about the Metronome right now). After the update, Session Drummer started playing back one of its canned MIDI sequences along with the click when I started to track, at very high volume. (This was compounded by my not being able to find the Synth Rack, but that's my fault for not reading the e-zine.)

2. While opening a project containing Rapture Pro, I got a message reading "Failed to locate resource", then a MS crash message (0xc...05). I uninstalled and reinstalled Rapture Pro, which seemed to fix it.

3. Trying to open some projects from the Start Menu or from the File menu led to "SONAR.PLT has stopped working". They opened OK from Windows Explorer, and behaved normally after saving.

I'm sure all this is going to get worked out.

So, mine has been working for a couple days, and I am working on old projects that I have to insert Pro Channel and CA-2A, EQ etc on (all predate that) and I am having no issues. I didn't do anything either. .....like more than give up and go have dinner! LOL

I also am experiencing very odd behaviour. The odd thing is that I don't keep my music computer connected to the Internet. Yet when I turned it on Sonar was behaving with almost all the problems listed in previous threads.

Sonar claims that I must re authorize plug ins and that others don't exist. It is very weird. I hope they have a fix soon.

I just checked a project that has no plug ins and it loads and plays fine. So I presume, as has previously been said that it is caused by the plug in manager.

I was also having real issues with 2016.11; Crashing on opening projects, crashing on inserting a synth, crashing when doing Edit >> Undo insert synth, crashing inserting CA-2A etc.

Restarting Sonar seemed to give a temporary fix but after a reboot the issues returned.

It also caused major issues with my Novation Impulse midi keyboard/controller; anything output from the keyboard on midi channel 1 would not play or register in Sonar. Also, the faders in the control surface stopped working. The keyboard still worked OK in Sonar X3.

Tried rolling back to 2016.10 and then 2016.09 neither of which worked.

I only managed to fix the issues by doing a complete C drive restore (Sonar is installed on the C drive) from the day before the update to 2016.11.

I am also getting crashes. I have no instances of CA-2A but I loaded a previous project that I need to add a part in and it would crash after about 60 seconds every time I restarted it.  Reboots didn't seem to help. I rolled back then and still had the same problems.

I still have Pro installed (as I did an upgrade and didn't really need the SPLAT features last night) and it didn't crash but the audio engine stopped every 40 seconds or so without fail even after a reboot.

So what should have been about half an hour of adding a part I spent most of the time fighting with the crashes in the DAW.

Yes.

I've narrowed down to 4 CW VSTs in a project with a single audio track and bus.

Did an uninstall, registry cleanup, reinstall and VST Scan for the CA2A.

> Seeing intermittent issues with VST Scan. Will sometimes hang, need to be restarted, will eventually complete the scan after a couple of tries.

I am then able to load and run the simple test project as well as client projects with the CA2A.

However restarting the PC (i.e. power down when done working or soft boot) will undo everything and I'm right back to ground zero.  I've gone through this cycle 12-15 times over the last day or so.

I can fix the problem, but in my case at least, something goes wrong after a PC Restart.

Noting the exact same symptoms and issues, all very repeatable with the simplest of projects.

I can get things working, but they only last until the PC gets restarted.

I dug into the VST Scan issue. SONARPLT.exe was no longer set to "Run as Admin" (who knows why, possible either a Sonar rolling update or Win10 update issue?) I reset it and VST Scan ran much smoother ... for a while.

As I continue to trouble shoot this, I'm seeing it starting to hang again on the same CW VSTs.

trying to pick out the red herrings in this one.

Noel.

I was using 2016.10 quite successfully.

I tend to believe the problems are most likely coincidental, but it's proving to be a bit of challenge to identify the root cause and correct them.

The symptoms that can be repeatably observed on my PC are:
1. CA2A will crash any project with it in it. (AS will trying to insert RaptureSession. LP 64 EQ or MB)
2. Uninstalling and reinstalling seems to restore usability until the PC is restarted.
3. VST Scan will hang on CA2A, RaptureSession and throw "Runtime Errors?" on the older LP 64 EQ and MB

Rolling back to 2016.10 did NOT solve the problem.

System Restore did NOT solve the problem.

There are several posts with very similar reports.

Please feel free to take a look at CWBRN-61566 or suggest something to try.

It would be appreciated.

Roland drivers do not appear to be the most robust and in my case I need to restart the PC to get them back after "SONARPLT.exe has stopped working".

I've reinstalled the drivers a number of times as part of troubleshooting issues, and nothing has changed. Still need to reboot after a crash.

Yes John this update has caused more problems than anything I've seen since the dark days of X1a/b.

They all seem to be related to the Plugin Manager so I just hope the Bakers have enough information to work out what went wrong and issue a fix.

There are zero changes to the vst scanner or plugin manager in the 2016.11 update. Which version were you using prior to this update? Your problems are most likely coincidental and caused by something else.

Given the plethora of VST related issues being reported across the forum, it would appear that something has definitely borked the scanner or the PI manager.

Interesting Stevesweat and Jackson white...

I have the Roland Octacapture and am seeing the same thing.  Any Sonar crash (CA2A or Melodyne, or anything else) causes ASIO drivers to vanish from my machine.  The only way to get them back is to restart DAW.

Now a days I always check a standalone VST like EZkeys to make sure my ASIO drivers are alive on the machine.

I have disabled and reinstalled the drivers a few times and it seems to help for a little while.

Do you also have super slow project loading times ?  I sometimes have 7 - 10 minute times loading projects.  Not sure if it is Roland ASIO driver related ?

I will start a new thread and see how many others are seeing issues with their Roland ASIO cards in the last little while.

Try as I may, without going to extremes, as I may not be considered an extreme user, I'm still not having any operational issues with this update.
Although Im not a computer guru by any means, following this and other threads it is somewhat reminiscent of behaviours Ive seen caused by virus's? Although Im thinking this has already been considered ruled out as a possible cause, I guess it only takes one common download, email or file shared.

Anyway hope for all you affected (or infected) someone finds the solution soon, and you all can get back to producing music.

@auto-da-fe

My experience strongly suggests the driver "disappearance" is a Roland issue and not a SONAR issue. Losing the drivers happens every time I get a "SONARPLT.exe has stopped working" and has been the case since X2/X3. More of an inconvenience than a showstopper, because the recovery has been very consistent. Similar issues have been noted in other threads well before the latest SONAR update.

I've been looking into updating the interface for this project studio but don't believe it has anything to do with the latest CW VST problems. That sounds more like a Win10 update or some core SONAR cfg issue. I've noted some changes in the registry during my multiple attempts to troubleshoot the problem.

I'm reaching way out on a limb here, but is there a pattern in common to a specific brand of audio interface and their ASIO drivers, that is now having issues with the plugins?  I ask this because not everyone has seen the issues in 2016.11.

Just wondering, because several folks have said that Sonar crashes for them upon inserting certain VST plugins, or starting up an existing project that contains them.

Noel mentioned that nothing has changed specifically relating to VST handling.

But, is it possible that the changes in 2016.11 to enhance the WASAPI drivers could be at play here?  I believe that some VST's interact with the Sonar audio engine as soon as they are inserted into a project.

I have had the Roland drivers for my 2 Studio-Captures disappearing consistently since late X2 updates!!! I can't even get the hacked driver installation trick to work to re-install without going online everytime to re-download and re-install. This seems to be just the ASIO driver problem because anything running on the Windows drivers still works!!! I have been tempted to go back to my MOTU 24io!!!
As for the new update, crashes I have never experienced on any other update. Staying where I am for now but bothers me that rolling back is not going to fix the issues!! How about a QuickFix patch?

@abacab

The Roland xCapture drivers have always been a bit shaky in my experience but only a minor inconvenience for some time. Easily recoverable with a PC restart, which in my case trashes any "fixes" I made to get the CW VSTs working.

@klauslix reported what sounds like identical symptoms and issues as mine but with a different interface (Steinberg) so I suspect the driver is likely more of a red herring.

However, I am wondering about the recent WASAPI drivers feature as my CPU core balancing now looks considerably more unbalanced than with the previous update. Certainly a "core enough" change to consider the potential impact on any drivers. I've also noted CW very recently updated two of the FX suites with the problematic VSTs before the latest update.

IME, it has only, but very consistently, been the same select CW VSTs that can be associated with the problem. Noel Borthwick stated in another thread that no changes were made to the VST Scan and I believe him, -but- something must have corrupted/changed with the noted CW VSTs to crash Cakewalk VST Scan.

I will try looking into system cfg, Win10 changes, VST3? this Thursday for additional clues.

I don't think this is driver-related or dependent or the brand of interface you use. Audio drivers should not come into play when you simply insert a plugin, and definitely don't come into play when you're scanning VSTs. I get the same behavior regardless of the driver mode (I've tested ASIO, WASAPI Exclusive and MME).

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Agreed on the driver comments, believe it's a bit of a red herring.

Mine were remarkably low and well balanced -until- the latest update. I've only had to time to run a few  larger projects since the latest issues but noting large discrepancies across the cores with #1 spiking considerably higher than all the rest.
