Jim Roseberry I think people have a bloody nerve and shows the state of their arrogance to point the finger at a person cos the software that they are using doesnt work for them. How arrogant can you be to say that it is their fault. Come of your arrogant high horse... similar to buying a pair of shoes and saying that the shoes are hurting your foot the sales person says it not your shoes but its your feet..stop complaining and know how to walk in them. Arrogant small minded and quite frankly dumb! Some of you have good reputations but the mindset shows that your knowledge in one field doesnt give you credentials...continue to be a big fish in a small pond and stop speaking out on behalve of others if you know you are small minded... If you never knew you was small minded now you can thank me for opening your eyes to the fact that you have delusions of grandeur. You can thank me by replying or send a check via paypal! The arrogance of some people.... Not arrogant at all... (trouble-shoot the problem without emotion) X2 isn't constantly crashing for the vast majority of users. If the app *is* working well for the vast majority of users, what explains the difference? The differences are hardware/configuration... and the way the application is used. The X2 code is identical in all cases. If you're having major stability issues with X2, they *can* be resolved or worked around. Might mean rebuilding/reconfiguring your machine... might mean changing workflow or plugin choice. I've read this thread and I haven't seen much "arrogance" from anyone. One thing I have learned over the years that I've been here is its very hard for this forum to diagnose a system at a distance when the responders don't see those same problems. Those few that have offer no solution. Trying to help a member is to me a very selfless thing to do. Its time taken out of ones own life that could be used in other ways. Yet often we get the poster criticizing us for offering help. What did Flywheel offer in the form of advice or a solution? Just a condemnation of those here trying to help our fellow member. No, you are not arrogant Flywheel but your post is full of sophistry.

Wormsen, thank you for your reply. I do not expect anyone to keep up with over 100 posts thread and remember all the details, so I will repeat myself. If the audience is not familiar with Dell Precisions- this is the most expensive, supposedly highest quality Dell workstations from business section. There should not be 2nd class parts. I had a budget of $4000 for this system. Ok, I did not have it but I bought any way (which I regret). In 2004, 3.6 clock speed processors were only available by special order on workstations. Yes, I understand, it is not a big deal today. The SCSI drives cost $900 each then. It was new thing like SSD couple years ago. The SCSIs are 15,000 rpm and should be able to handle audio engine playback- that was the purpose. About starting over: I did start over. I had some kind of problem with the system (it might be power supply). 2 out of 3 hard drives failed, so as CD/DVD drive, so as all memory modules and at the end- the motherboard. While the configuration idea is 2004, so as Pentium 4 processor, it is high speed processor and should be able to handle Sonar. I changed motherboard, 2 hard drives, all memory and DVD drive, so all the parts are around 2010- couple years old. I do not have any junk software on it. I reinstalled Windows XP SP3. I also have Logic Platinum on it, Nero 9 and Norton. I had Norton 360 for years on this system- I do not think this is the problem. I will change the power supply. Rebuilding this system from ground up cost me another $1500, as hard drives at that time cost $400. I would give up but this machine has all new parts. I am a single mother who is paying for school tuition- I do not have that much money to throw around. Plus- all my music is on this system, I would like it to work. I can go back to Sonar X1 if I have to.

Vladasyn, Get rid of Norton and you really can't run X2a on XP. I'll bet if you update your OS to at least Win 7 things will go a lot easier for you. What concerns me is your CPU. Its way too old. Also about your large number of keyboards and modules a mixer may be a solution for them. One that has the ability to send multi outs to the computer will be helpful I think. If you do go to Win 7 you wont need Norton anyway.

Is there a reason you won't upgrade to Win 7? If are worried about old programs 7 Pro has an XP mode for them. X2 was NOT designed to work with XP and that is likely a huge source of your current problems.

If you do go to Win 7 you wont need Norton anyway. How so? I had to install MSE separately. But yes... Norton is also another likely culprit. If you are dead set on using disconnect your computer from the internet when you intend to work on your DAW then disable Norton. Remember to turn it back on before going back online. MSE however is a much better option both for not interfering with audio tasks and security.

With Windows 8 Windows Defender is built in and replaces Microsoft Security Essentials. It works the same way though.

I can go back to Sonar X1 if I have to. Couple of questions for you, Vlada. 1. As I understand it, you have only music software on this computer, plus projects and other data. What besides Sonar is on the computer? 2. I had Norton a long time ago, and found the program to be a bit disruptive, plus I thought their support sucked and it had a big footprint on the computer. I am not asking you you to eliminate it, but would like to know - is it COMPLETELY disabled during audio sessions with Sonar? Many times there are background services that run even if you think these kinds of programs are not running. So, can you detail what you do with Norton as you prepare to do a session with Sonar? 3. Are all of your projects and critical data backed up? This would include any custom presets, patterns, drum kits, etc. I believe that the slowness of the computer would hamper performance, but would not result in the level of instability you have on your computer. I had mentioned the power supply as a potential problem, and while I understand you will replace is (really easy to mount, rest is just connectors), I am hoping that there are some other things that could be done to stabilize things. So - you have a bunch of folks here pulling for you, and maybe between everybody some positive adjustments can be made to tide you over until you get your new dream machine. Lastly - kudos for the level of what you are going through to not only participate in creating music, but for doing that while making sure you are taking care of things like tuition for your wee ones. Good stuff. Bob Bone

With Windows 8 Windows Defender is built in hmm... I hope they allow you to use other AVs if you wanted. MSE is fine for my DAW but Avast has been on my surfing computers for years and barring any major downfall likely always will be. Also... Windows Defender is on my 7 systems but I think it's more of a firewall thingy. I'm a little confused. Is the Defender/MSE on 8 a special version of MSE or something? Surely it's not the standard MSE release if they changed the name.

Beep I have MSE on Vista. Thats where I found out about it. It is not a firewall. Its a very powerful anti-virus that does not interfere with your programs. It keeps a very low profile but is very effective. The firewall was built into Vista. Windows Defender is the anti-virus part. In Windows 8 you can turn it off if you want or remove it. I have no reason to use another anti virus so I can't comment on that. Windows 8 adds Smart Screen which wont allow a program to start unless you let it. Its further UAC control that is not an imposition like the UAC in Vista was. I turned mine off in Vista because it got in the way. In Windows 8 I have all the security working. Once you let a program run Windows 8 wont stop it again. Vista had a bad habit of always stopping programs and asking if it was OK to run. That got old quickly. Really MS has made great strides in security. The OS is very difficult to infect. Not that is can't be but its no where as easy as it used to be. The core system and kernel are nicely protected too.

IMHO: If you don't like Sonar, don't go to another PC-based DAW. Get dedicated DAW hardware. Otherwise, history will repeat itself.

Mr Jim well put I guess you may just react in a way that will rub people up the wrong way sometimes. Especially, if things have been said before and it seems to be the same old same old age old problems. It's like having car trouble and someone else has the same model as you and theirs tuns like a peach.... If i don't need new equipment or the latest mod bod then I just don't need it. However, if I have the money or I accumulate within a time period then yes I may think about upgrading. If I upgrade to X2 I will update all my equipment it wouldnt be profitable for me to tak half measures.

Danny Danzi At times it reminds me of a chick that you have to tread softly with. Watch every little thing you say or she will explode on you. Yeah, but what a chick...reminds me of my ex... I have had my share of Cakewalk/Sonar issues on occasion and have always managed to get them sorted out by methodically working through the problem. Honestly, I miss the old days where we could explicitly tell Windows which IRQ was to be used for what device. Now that we have limited/no control, it can be a crapshoot when booting as to whether an interface will be stable or not. Regards, Dan

Key word "methodically". Another one "document". Key phrase "level set". All essential to basic troubleshooting of any type of problem from your car to Sonar. Scatter shoot round and round and after a while it becomes a confused mess of he said she said and so forth. I think the OP is on track towards getting to the bottom of it so let's start from scratch and see what we as a group can come up with to help her. Some good suggestions (dump Norton) have been made already.

I have no idea what the difference between MSE and Defender is, all I know is that the whole shebang was preinstalled with Windows 7 when I upgraded, certainly don't recall having to download anything extra. Maybe I'm wrong though. Like you, I too used Avast for years because it seemed to be the best freeware AV out there. However, once I started to read about MSE being just as good as any other AV, I ditched Avast purely because it seemed wasteful to have it installed when a more OS-integrated AV was already there. To date, nothing has happened to make me think that Avast was a better AV. There's an article here which stacks Avast against MSE in terms of computer impact, and the both scored almost the same, so I don't think there's going to be any kind of performance advantage with one over the other. http://dottech.org/14151/...vs-avast-vs-avg/
