At first I was WTH???  Then I saw the string gauges and realized I was used to seeing the strings in the opposite direction!  LOL.  The top six strings are simply tuned a half-step down from the normal EADGBE then you have two lower strings, right?  So why is the 8th string (lowest) not tuned to F# as well?  I could understand it being E (down a full step like a drop-D on a normal six-string), but F?  Weird.

Still, that's one sharp guitar you've got there!  (Pun intended and not.  )

Re: Just recently got my first 8 string Guitar 2016/07/11 20:06:22 (permalink)
Jarsve , that is one very nice looking guitar you have there How's she play ?
Yes , its a 27 scale , that's exactly what I thought .
My 8 string guitar is a striped down Rat Rod version along similar lines of yours ...Yet, it's another gtr company , non EMG pick ups and a fixed bridge ...
I love the 28 inch scale ...lots of room on the fingerboard . The fixed bridge has enough room to get proper intonation on all the strings , also with the longer scale , the string tension feels right ( too me ) ...
Hey , thanks for sharing your axe ...

Craig , the tuning specs listed on the Ibanez page are the equivalent of what standard 8 string guitar is tuned to when using an 8 string A 440 tuning ...
Ibanez just lists it down a half step ...it's just like tuning all the strings of 6 string guitar to an Eb half step down tuning ....lots of 6 string players have done that ...
Ibanez low to high tuning .....F , Bb , Eb, Ab, Db , Gb, Bb, Eb, = an a 440 8 string tuning tuned down one semitone
8 string guitar a 440 standard tuning low to high ....F#, B , E, A, D, G, B, E, ( my current tuning )
With the longer scale lengths on most of the current crop of extended rage guitars , you may notice that most of the extended range guitars wind up using much lighter strings  .....
The longer scale gives the lighter strings more tension in all aspects of how they feel when you play ..
For example , my 7 string guitar is a 25 1/2 Fender style scale length ....
I have to use heavier strings just to keep things from flopping around when I'm playing it ....
On the 8 string I get the same type of feel that I'm used to running a set of strings 2 gauges down .The guitar still feels tight and spongy ...I'm using 9's ..while I have to use 10's or 11's on my 7 ......

anyway , nice talking with you guys,

Kenny

I had to set fix the neck after going to E, H, E, A, D, G, H, E. It didn't change much but the tension is higher so I wanted to be sure. And I like low strings. Low action that is.

The guitar is sounding metal. You can play other styles on it, but you wont get a clean, clean sound. One thing that it does really good is 80s thrash metal. Better than my 7 strings with same pickups and same brand, but with a Ibanez locks and floating tremolo bridge system.

I have short fingers so this is my limit for the neck. It would be cool just to own a 9 strings someday, but I don’t think I could play on the lowest and the highest at the same time. This neck feels good and nice to use.

To be honest I should practice more. I am too lazy to practice for long. And I often skip. So I guess you are a much better guitarist than me. Only light in the tunnel is that I am playing. But should do much more.

Sure I get where your coming from

I happen too think "we all should practice the guitar " a lot more  .
IMHO,  20 hrs a day just don't cut it anymore couldn't resist ..he he he ..

Ibanez makes some Bad @$$ed guitars ..The one I have I got in 1987 & it's a keeper .
Someday when I have the money to do so , I would like to get The Ibanez 7 string Arch-top for clean solo Jazz Guitar Playing ..That's the type of Playing that sparked my interest in 7 strings way back in the day .

For now I'm very happy with learning how to play the 8 string guitar ...8 strings seems about right for where I'm at.

Yeah , 9 strings and 10 string guitars I'm also interested in .....BRING IT ON I'll be going there once I find a rich girlfriend or the day I finally get a gig ( once again )...judging by my track record I may need to get a GIG playing ..since my golden slipper got toe jam heh he ...

That was fun!  I couldn't figure out how they did the drums though...

I thought that was cool how the guitar goes so low and the bass goes so high that they changed jobs for a measure or two in the middle.

I'm now off to find music by Venturia and Adagio!  Viva Le Prog Français?

BTW - I read that Charly gets some help on his high and squealy notes from a custom pick that has metal on its edge.  Interesting.

Those 2 guys are great ....
I have noticed that most of the 8 string guitar videos  I have seen on line feature the players playing to some sort of a backing track too fill the sound out . (when they are not playing with a full on band in the videos )

Those guys sure make it look easy ....Yeah I like that pick squeal thing he is doing ...
I grabbed both of those tunes and after messing around with some of the sections they played for a few hours ..
all I can tell you is ...that $hit is hard to play even at half speed .....Whew , those 2 young dudes are certainly in their prime ..
As an Old Fart (me ) currently trying to play just like them 2 players is about the equivalent of me at my age right now trying to arm wrestle Arnold Schwarzenegger when He was Conan

Like I said ,  Those guys sure make it look easy ....

Oh well , the good news is at least this old dog is learning some new tricks ..Y'all better watch out I'm coming to get you

Congratulations!

15 years ago I worked at a music shop in Syracuse, where my friend had a Schecter Diamond Series C7 on consigment, and he had only used it a few times.  Bookmatched ash - a seriously nice instrument.  One day when I was working these guys came in, 2 of em distracted me while their friend ran off with it.  4 months later, the one guy who was talking to me came back with it, saying he sent his friend to jail and he never felt good about it.

I bought it immediately.

It is still with me today.

I immediately special ordered a jb and 59 7 string version of pickups for it from seymour duncan.

As far as getting used to it, I used to play it like a 6 string with an added friend, but I soon tired of that mentality and started forcing myself to extend all of my scale and chord routines to include the extra range of a low b.  Soon, I was sloppy on a 6!

This experience pushed me to look at the guitar differently than I did, and ultimately music.

Be the first one who thinks that you can

i guess you can easily make a metal plate for the pick. it doesn't need to cover the whole side, just a cm. something you could take of old and put on new. i'm going to dig into it.

I'm glad you wound up getting that guitar . I'm sure your 7 string  guitar is happy you got it too .

I certainly enjoyed playing the 7 string .
Yet, The 7 string had me saying to myself that I wanted to get more of the piano type of low range in my chord voices  .
I'm very happy I was able to get an 8 string guitar that was in my price range ....

My musical time and goals have always been about spending time on learning music and how it applies to being able to play it on the guitars fingerboard ...
The coolest thing I love about the 8 string is that I'm able to apply and hear much of what my actual true foundation in music is while doing my best to play it on the guitar .... the extended rage has allowed me too play things in real time that I would have had to double track . To me that is important because I can find chord voices I would have never found on a 6 or 7 string ...
It's all coming together faster than I would have guessed and it seems too be working out for me so far ....
thank you for the kind words

Jarsve
i guess you can easily make a metal plate for the pick. it doesn't need to cover the whole side, just a cm. something you could take of old and put on new. i'm going to dig into it.

Jarsve
Let us know how it comes along ....there may be a few customers here in this thread
Oh BTW , that's a nice pic shot of the plectrum ....

all the best,

Kenny

The Guitar I got is an entry level Schecter C-8 Deluxe just like this one in the stock photo .
Overall , I'm surprised how good it is in general and when I factor in the price I got it for I'm very pleased .

Man , I'm really digging it so far, even though I'm hitting some really major Hey Man I'm fricking lost all the time on this neck with all the fretboard fingering collisions

all the best ,

Kenny

Congrats Kenny !

I've got my 9 strings Ibanez RG9 about 9 months ago and loving it, comes with a huge learning curve too! My picking hand kept telling me the string gab is smaller compared to the regular 6 strings till I have to measure it.. which is not! That puts me back to practicing it more

Always wanted to compare the Schecter C-x series with the RG9 but my local supplier would not want to bring in unless I'm willing to buy it.

I'm using the factory tuning : 1st to 9th ( E/B/G/D/A/E/B/F#/C# ) but changed the gauge to suite my finger style playing :

1 - 6  : 11 - 54 (Ernie Ball Beefy Slinry pack)
7,8 and 9 : Regular bass strings - 65, 80 and 100 (4-strings pack, not using the '45' string).

Hi Albert,

It sounds too me that you have a pretty Awesome guitar there . Yeah , 9 stings Wow ....congrats
One of these days I will have to sit down and cop a feel on a 9 string guitar . I would be able to know pretty fast if getting myself a 9 string would be a good future move or not ...
Having the Low F# on the 8 string is pretty good useful range . I do miss the Low E since I'm tuned to an 8 string  typical tuning ...
I need to keep it there so I can stay consistent in my learning and playing , Everything I learn and play in one key gets put through a few keys regardless of how soon I have played it ...
If I can play it clean after figuring in out in 5 min's , in about 20 min's I will play the idea or riff in at least 4 or 5 different Keys ....or chromatically .....
That approach is something I have been doing for many years  regardless of what type of guitar I'm playing ...
I doesn't matter that I may only have it down correctly in only a few Keys and that I may soon forget how to finger the parts with fluency and correct fret board habits  in other keys ...
What matters to me is that I can soon catch up with my familiarity of being able to express musical Ideas  and I have multiplied an idea I can play in numerous keys ...

Right about now I'm sure someone who  may be reading this may be asking Why is Kenny going here ?
That would be a logical question to ask .....I'm going there for a couple of reasons ...

From what I have seen and heard so far , a lot of these guitar players that have impressive speed and chops on the whole extended range/  school of  guitar playing do indeed have admirable attributes and quality's in their guitar playing .....there is absolutely no doubt about that ....

I mean no disrespect to any of them when I say this ....
I could probably stop 99 % of them dead in their tracks cold with out doing anything more than asking them to play what they have just played in a different Key ..
If the tune was in E , play that $hit in Eb or F for starters and if you can do that at the same tempo cool , then we can go from E to Bb or Ab ....BTW, this is not a rant ..just an observation ...
I want so much more out of my playing and this is the standard I hold my self accountable too   ...

thinking about your 9 string and the range ,
Yeah , I would Love the ability too be able to get down to a Low D or Low C ...very usable range of low end in all forms of music

all the best ,

Kenny

Craig ,
I sure hope you can and do get something to play on that will bring you that type of enjoyment ....

This question goes out to a few of the fellas here that have and use extended range guitars ...

thedukewestern, Jarsve , and Albert,

do any of you guys use a string dampener over by the nut area where the strings may resonate ?
after giving myself some time in the woodshed I have gotten serous and recently started recording a lot of my ideas  ...
I'm noticing that I'm getting a little bit of low end rumble possibly due to sympathetic vibrations of sorts happening with both ends of the strings VIA both ends of the nut letting things ring  through  .
I may have to figure something out since I'm playing my parts as cleanly as humanly possible technique wise...

all the best ,

Kenny

i use a sweatband. i use it to damper stings when soloing and it dampers resonance. its easy to move from just the head to both head and neck.

The song I'm working on is not fully ready for prime time ..yet I could post a clip if a few people are interested.
let me know ...

(I'm still trying to figure out how wearing a sweatband helps Jarsve play guitar; maybe he doesn't drip all over the place?  )

Hi James , Hi Craig , thank you guys for being interested

OK here we go .

http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_songInfo.cfm?bandID=614531&songID=13423074

A couple of things off the top of my head so people know what they are listening to ...
The song itself is a work in progress . Jazz Fusion Type of Groove
The guitar and Bass part you are hearing were all played at once ...
This was recorded as one track in real time over a drum part ...no tempo trickery's involved  ..tempo is 86 BPM
I punched in a couple of spots . the sections that are chords only are where the punch ins took place ...
i did that because I'm building up the song and coming up with sections ....
The trickiest thing about doing this was not the playing at all ...it turns out that I had to clone the guitar part and Eq the bass and the higher end separately ....still dialing it in ...

I honestly do appreciate your interest , please forgive me if I haven't reverb ed or bussed any hip sounds in the tunes mix yet ...I've only been working on this for song for 2 days ...

I hope some one enjoys the guitar playing ....

all the best ,

Kenny

Love it! That's some sweet stuff Kenny. Great bass groove hooked me right in. That 8-string sounds really nice.
