They can also be looked at as global screensets. I opened each of my screensets, then created a new lens and saved it with the same name. You can create more lenses than you can screensets. I expect it's been explained elsewhere, but why do screensets have to be per project only, and not global?

Note: SONAR Home Studio includes a limited number of fixed Lenses that cannot be modified. So that answers that question. Interestingly, If you close a project and your view say's "advanced", any projects already saved on that computer in that version return in full glory. But any old projects created on a different version, like Splat open in a plain window with no side or bottom panes. You have to change the Lenses view and all is good. Also opening a project, do nothing but change the lenses setting and close the project and it does not ask you to save, so lenses is outside the project parameters and just global to your Sonar window. But for some reason any projects from a different computer or version do not use your lenses setting when loaded.

kennywtelejazz John , The Lenses , are they along the lines of how Samplitude handles personal work-spaces ? or are The Lenses it's own type of SONAR thing for creating personal work spaces ? Kenny
Very good question. They are a lot like the Samplitude workspaces. Samplitude is a very deep DAW with its own way of doing things. Sonar is very deep too for its core purpose. I get the notion with Samplitude that its an audio editor with multitrack audio and MIDI bolted on. I have Samplitude Pro X2. Where Sonar is a MIDI sequencer with audio bolted on. I use Sonar more than any other DAW. Its quick and simple yet still deep. I do think with very little actual time with Lenses that there is more power in them. One also has to figure in screensets too. I don't consider myself a Samplitude expert.

Using Lenses To select a Lens Do one of the following: Click the Lenses drop-down list in the application bar across the top, then select the desired Lens. Press the Lens’ assigned keyboard shortcut (if previously assigned in Edit > Preferences > Customization – Keyboard Shortcuts). The above is from the help file.

I'm definitely in the minority here, but I like my UI to stay the way I have it set up, I'm used to where everything is, and know where to find everything. When I press a preset Lens, it's like taking a finished jig-saw puzzle and scrambling all the pieces. Especially working on a dual monitor setup, it reverts everything to a single screen, with all the previous full screen sections condensed into little tiny sections. I tried it once and instantly went back to my default screen setup.
I'm sure people will find lenses useful. Photoshop has a similar feature to setup your screen for different purposes. But in Photoshop there aren't as many components and windows to deal with, so the changes aren't so jarring.
Lee Shapirowww.soundclick.com/leeshapiro Welcome BandLab and thank you for giving Cakewalk and Sonar a new lease on life.

@Leee - I agree. Maybe it's just that I'm not so ADD. I have no issue with ALL of the windows and menu items nad such being available to me when I'm doing any particular thing. I want everything at my disposal during all phases of a project. I am every bit as likely to need the Piano Roll View during mixing as I am during tracking. While I may not currently be using the Matrix View for anything, I'd like to learn to incorporate it into my workflow. The #1 way I can figure on NOT doing that is to create a Lens that takes it out of my options. I'm likely to never think of that view again. Sure, I might not "see something shiny" or be attracted to a passing squirrel, but I am at least likely to recall that the feature exists at all, where if I were to remove it from my selections entirely, it might as well not exist as a feature.

I can see how some may find them useful - particularly those that are using laptops with limited screen real estate. Then again, maybe some months down the road I may wonder how I ever did anything without them. They load almost instantly here on ~small projects.

Lenses are a brand new UI paradigm from Cakewalk that is designed to greatly improve workflow and focus. It is vastly different from screensets which just store view info (screensets are actually a small subset of Lenses). A brief description of the feature: SONAR has evolved into a complex application with hundreds of features. This can cause an information overload for both new as well as experienced users. Exposing every available feature makes SONAR complicated and difficult to use. Additionally an application should not force you to see features you don’t use, some workflows require access to many features, while other workflows benefit from a simpler and more focused UI. Using Lenses the SONAR user interface now allows for easy one click switching to different user workflows by adapting the UI to show or suggest elements that are relevant to that workflow. Most users beginner or advanced, typically use only a small subset of features depending on their workflow or experience level. Lenses solve this problem by hiding features that are not needed for a particular user or task. Feature hiding extends across all aspects of the program. The following elements can be stored and customized as part of a lens: - menu items
- keyboard accelerators
- control bar modules
- controls in tracks and buses
- features
- commands
- views
- view positioning

I think they are a very cool idea. i do wonder how well they support dual monitors? I do think they add a great advantage to laptops. One thing is for sure is, it gives us the user, options. I can't see that as anything but good.

Actually to the contrary its to REMOVE options and clutter that you don't need :) Its not only for laptops. Its for anyone who wants to avoid distractions and only see a streamlined view of the features they are actively working with. Lenses are an appropriate name. This is building on an adaptive UI paradigm which we may extend even further in the future.

I think this will be really useful. While I love how the program is evolving, at times I've felt SONAR is starting to get a bit....scattered ( for lack of better word) with the functionality increases that are coming hard and fast. Unintended consequence is a UI sometimes has a lot of stuff I don't need, but I want to get to useful views faster than I currently can. I think this addresses that issue ( actually better than screen sets). One question: it seems my "Custom" module has defaulted to other configurations within the loaded Lenses. Any way to retrieve my previous "Custom" module with the layout I had previously? I'm guessing the answer is that I need to build new ones that relate to my customized Lenses? ( if I'm getting the intended purpose here...)

I think that this is a good development! I would think that it could possibly extend to providing a distinct "Studio mode", a "Live Mode", and maybe others, such as a "Song Writers Mode", etc. I recently noticed that a few of the forum members have bought the latest release of Sonar Home Studio for their laptops. The perception of a simplified workspace, accompanied by the associated stability, is especially attractive for live performance. I have been hearing for years that Ableton Live is the only serious option for live performance. Game on!!!

If I'm not mistaken, this was already possible in previous versions. You could have just hidden those unnecessary modules via the right-click menu. But if you mean that we can now quickly show/hide CB modules by switching Lenses, I agree, it can be an advantage for some users. The biggest benefit of Lenses for me so far is that I'll be able to easily restore my custom track control presets, track control order, Preferences Display settings, etc. (let alone the control bar layout) by just importing my custom lens when I clean install SONAR. I'm hoping that track icon settings and Track view's Display menu settings will also be covered by Lenses in a future update.

Some of the features of lenses were available before but the only way of setting them was very laborious and required knowledge of custom track control manager and other display settings. I don't think most users even knew about the availability of some of these settings earlier. Also there was no way to hide features themselves. Lenses provide a simple and convenient way to control a plethora of settings, features and layout via a single preset.

Just one example: The workspace I would use for recording live sources with mics verses a session where I'm doing heavy editing/and or recording of midi parts would use a drastically different set of CB modules, track controls, Browser layouts, even choices in Custom module in Control Bar....that's where this feature really kills. Once I started really thinking that through and setting custom Lenses up, it made me go back to my Screensets and refine what THEY do on a more "project by project" basis. I think this was a much needed and brilliant call to integrate this!
