MIDI problem with Fantom S

I've been using Sonar 5 for the past month or so, and it's been working great with my Fantom S, but it just stopped working today.

I had downloaded the bank/patch definitions for the Fantom S for Sonar, so I could select the channel/bank/patch in Sonar and the Fantom would play it. I had recorded several songs with all MIDI data, with several different tracks playing different patches on separate MIDI channels through the Fantom. Everything worked perfectly. No problem.

Today, I turned everything on, and it's not working any more. The MIDI connection works, because I can trigger softsynths with the Fantom keyboard (so at least the MIDI out from my keyboard into Sonar is fine), but when I try to use the Fantom as my output and select patches in Sonar, the Fantom basically crashes. It's like it doesn't know what to do with the MIDI data it's receiving and it freaks out. The sound that comes out is a muddled mess.

I'm not sure if the problem might be in Sonar's MIDI settings, or perhaps the Fantom S MIDI settings (can't remember if I changed any settings recently). Any ideas on what might be causing the problem? Could it be hardware?

Thanks for any suggestions or help anyone can provide.

difficult to answer this because don`t want to insult. You do have the local off right? If you don`t have a lot of user patches saved, you could initialize--or even if you do have a lot of patches, you could do a sysex one by one of your favorites and then load them in one by one after intitialization.

But someone might have a simpler idea.

That's funny because just last week I started having midi "issues" with my Fantom and Sonar 3.1.1.

I was trying to sync a looped sequence while recording audio from a vocal and guitar. If I had to stop Sonar, the Fantom would never resync. I don't know, maybe I have to restart from the begining of the song to resync and not stop.

I hope things work out for you. Did you call Roland or maybe a third party like Sweetwater?

I figured out how to fix it.

I went into System -> MIDI properties in the Fantom, and turned all the Transmit settings to "off".

I have the MIDI settings set to receive program data (bank/patch info), but I think the Fantom was trying to send program data to Sonar, while it was trying receive the same from Sonar. So Sonar was telling it to play one patch, and the Fantom was telling Sonar it wanted to play another.

I think that's my dumbed down way of describing what I think was happening. Once I set the Transmit settings to "off", then the Fantom was able to receive program data from Sonar and it has worked fine since then.

Thanks for all the responses. Appreciate it.

just wanted to add that using your keyboard as your main module wil always have it's downfalls and a few hoops to overcome--especially if you use for anything motor driven/arpeggiator, etc where it is actualy being triggered by an exyernal sequencing program such as Sonar. But, the sounds are worth it huh? I use my Karma sometimes.
