The reviews were about all I read last time, aside from titles, and a welcome break,
Not that I don't appreciate the Russian updates (LOL), new toys, themes and under the hood fixes, but I'm still working on understanding Sonitus plugin's, LOL.
But more seriously, having Ozone Id like to see Maximizer (and Exciter) reviewed, since they can be used as VST's in Sonar, I've been looking at getting a midi integrated guitar also, so yes also.
Some things to learn about, EUCON enabled?  PT-S3 interface with Sonar?
Keep up the reviews,
Cheers

Re: [Market Research] Just Wondering...Does Anyone Read the Product Reviews in the eZine? 2016/08/16 17:10:13 (permalink)
Anderton
The past two issues have had product reviews of SONAR-friendly products - the Xkey 25 keyboard controller and MIDIMATE II USB MIDI interface. My intention was to give an extra goodie to members, as well as provide something in the eZine that would be useful to people who hadn't upgraded to SONAR 2015.

I'd be interested in thoughts/suggestions about whether having reviews is helpful, and if so, the type of products you'd like to see covered. For example, I feel one important plug-in SONAR doesn't have is a really good multiband "maximizer." I've traditionally used the Waves L3 Multimaximizer but have been playing around with the Maximizer in Ozone and it's exceptional...might be worth reviewing. I also plan to review hardware controllers, like Jamstix and the You Rock Guitar for those who want to do MIDI guitar inexpensively.

Thoughts?

Hi there Anderton,
I definitely read and enjoy your reviews.......
For us musicians, I think more reviews focused along the lines of say, speakers, audio interfaces(both firewire and usb), and definitely mics....

So...this thread is over a year old (I posted it after doing the first two reviews to see if it was worth taking the time to continue writing them), but someone who considered reviews "insulting" resurrected it. I wasn't really expecting any further response, but thanks for User Feedback, Round 2.

Anyway, the same problem keeps persisting...to find the eZine, you need to know the Secret Handshake, as well as have the Cakewalk Special eZine Decoder Ring, which is available only from certain unannounced locations between the hours of 9:17 and 10:43 PM on alternate Tuesdays following Groundhog Day. However, there is a lesser-known alternative: you can go to the Rolling Updates page in the products section, where you'll see a tiny link to the eZine as part of the update description.

There has been sporadic talk of having it downloadable from the Command Center, but it never happens so the method listed above is the only way to find it if you don't open the newsletter. Sometimes there's a link in the forum sticky announcing the latest update, but I don't think it's been happening recently. Frankly, Cakewalk needs to keep the eZine a secret because the material in there could threaten national security if it falls into the wrong hands...especially the Top 10 lists.

I followed all of your instructions, evening locating the un-locatable locations, and all I could find was a special edition Star Wars Bluetooth light sabre, the Rick Moranis signature edition with ludicrous mode, with no sign whatsoever of the Decoder Ring, let alone anyone to shake hands with.

I've had it with all these Gibson tactics at making me go to PT, which they must own too.

Despite your best efforts, I will remain, and read the ezine on the rolling updates page, even read your product reviews if I want.....discarding emails at my whim....

Product reviews are great when you are young and in acquisition mode. At this point I'm usually thinking about what I can get rid of to simplify my life. I'm sure there are many folks that just drool over well written product reviews, so you do have an audience.

If you get any insight into technology that may be phased out please write about it. Tape, ADAT, compact optical are examples of things that have had different life cycles, each shorter than the other. Tech change is something that everyone should read about. No sense reviewing the latest fire wire device. Maybe reviewing the changing world of DAW platforms would be worthwhile.

Very interesting comment. I guess you've figured out that I want the eZine to appeal to more than just SONAR update users, so what you're suggesting supports that goal. Totally agree about not reviewing technology in its twilight, but hadn't thought of putting reviews in more context as a general theme, although I did do that with the MixChecker review...it seemed relevant because of the bewildering array of playback media these days.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Totally agree  . . . as suggested by Craig's Ezine reviews, I'm now the proud owner of some KRK headphones, and an iLoud speaker, that I probably wouldn't have even known about when I went out shopping if I hadn't read them in the Ezines. Also, the fact that he's used the products, and they usually relate somehow to Sonar, extra bonus. I certainly trust his opinion a lot more that any music store salesmen who are usually motivated by trying to merely move their overstocked items.

Thanks for noticing . However, it's only fair to point out there is a downside...because I write only about products I've used for a while (or used intensively for a shorter time), you're not going to be reading reviews about hot new products. The iLoud you mention has been around for over 2.5 years! But because I found it so useful in so many ways, I thought SONARians would want to know about it. Ditto the KNS 8400 headphones. The only reason I checked them out was because Phil O'Keefe has been using them forever, and he recommended that I try them. I thought they were really exceptional, hence the review.

Anyway, I think I got more feedback from the necro aspect than the original iteration, and my sense is enough people find the reviews worth reading to justify my time writing them. Those who don't like them don't have to read them so they're covered too.

However, I really, really liked Ampfixer's suggestion, and as much as possible in the future, will use products not just as items to review, but as springboards for a more general discussion that will hopefully have an educational component. I already see great potential for this in the product I'll be reviewing for August.

Once again, the forum feedback is intelligent and invaluable.

I always read the ezine... sometimes I skip the reviews of things that aren't included that I don't think I need.

I make some videos. This one shows how to do a physical loopback on the RME UCX to get many more equalizer nodes.

That already exists independent of the eZine, click on What's New in the online help. But the eZine is constructed so all the SONAR-specific stuff is in the first pages. The "features" happen afterward.

i want to see the CWBR numbers that have been fixed

That may be possible for the eZine, I'll check into it.

It's nice to be reminded that these ezines exist.  I remember and read the first one, then promptly forgot they existed, and couldn't even figure out where to find them until i got the the middle of page two of this thread.  A reminder every time a new issue is out will help readership...or multiple reminders...or sticky at the reserved top section of this forum...

Forgetfulness is the bane of all man's endeavors.

Any products you want to review is fine with me.  Any advertising revenue you care to generate is fine with me.  That eZine is a lot of work.  Just looked through them all.  I saw nothing that was not very valuable.

It's particularly useful when you hit creative blocks - I speak from personal experience. I offered it to Cakewalk to include in a membership release, but they didn't want it.

Funny ... I was actually reading this while testing ASIO4ALL for use with Sonar Platinum on my modest (cheap) non-DAW laptop.

Just curious if I could run a couple of VST instruments with effects through headphones while traveling.  In my test I hooked up to a good 2.1 powered speaker system with subwoofer.  CD quality sound filled the room

It actually runs surprisingly well on my Realtek audio chip.  Nearly the same latency (under 10msec one direction - no input enabled) as my desktop DAW with a Firewire interface.  No crackling or dropouts

Laptop spec:  Acer Aspire E-15, Core i5-4210U 1.7GHz, 4GB DDR3, Intel HD 4400 graphics, 500GB HDD 5400rpm, Windows 10 Home x64, Sonar Platinum 2016.07

DAW: CbB; Sonar Platinum, and others ...

I have mixed feelings about it.
I used to use it when in a pinch on a laptop a few years back. I also suggested it to people who were just getting started and didn't have enough money to buy an audio interface.
but when I noticed the problems it was causing (both operator error and A4A) I decided not to suggest it anymore.

like anything though, with enough perseverance, one can make it happen.
problem is, most who need to use it are just starting out in the audio field and don't know how to set it up, thus leading to crashes and driver conflicts.

Craigs chord library...where is it and how do I get it
looks amazing and also looks like a long, pain staking process to create.

It's particularly useful when you hit creative blocks - I speak from personal experience. I offered it to Cakewalk to include in a membership release, but they didn't want it.

I find this strange because I've read a lot of requests for a chord tool within sonar.
this library would be a nice add on Craig. as we become older and more wise, I think we begin to understand set up time is key to being focused and not losing interest as easy. a chord library IMO is a set up tool.
it manages steps and lets you bypass critical set up time to allow the user to use a more fluent approach.
