Zo, If you go to your invoice e-mail and press"check your order you will get sent to the JRR account. Your redeem code is there on your invoice.

Yeah I've been waiting all day for an email from JRR but no joy, so I checked my invoice and voila there was the redeem code. JRR should have said "periodically check your invoice for the code"...

They used to do it automartically with other brands , i think since cakewalk is new in their store , it's manual for now

When you purchase from us that is correct since we deliver files immediately. When you purchase from retailers, it starts when you redeem the product. You'll get a redemption code and then instructions on how to install. So you won't be penalized for pre-ordering.

In theory then, when buying from a retailer, how long could someone hold on to the codes before activating and claiming their latest version and 12 months membership ? Is there a time limit or for example, could someone buy today, keep using what they have for three years and then get a super-duper update at that time with no further payment required?

I would say the redemption code is not time locked but the initial 3rd party addons may be (i.e. AD2 3 ad paks etc. this time).

From a retailer, we won't know their code until they redeem so that's when the clock starts. So in theory yes, you could do that. But I can't guarantee that three or ten years from now, we'll still offering Addictive Drums 2 so that might change. 
 

Seems to me my imagining was pretty close to the mark.

WRT AD2 being redeemable for until forever I would say that is a question for XLN. Most redemption systems these days have an option for timeout. 
 
Again, I'd like to hope that since it was paid for the AD2 redemption would always be valid but it might fail in the CW store upon registering the SONAR purchase way on down the line.

I'd have thought that AD2 redemtion should be valid all the time Cake bundle it with Sonar. You redeem against Sonar, this is the first Cake know about it, generates an AD code, you redeem. XLN have no purchase time other than when cake provided the registration code for XLN.
 
Even if you have no interest in AD2 at the moment, something may change with them, and therefore you. I would register yourself with XLN, and just not choose a product.  I have 2 kit pieces available for download, as I couldn't decide at the time, they are still available for me from November.
 
I have the drums that I wanted, but since deciding to by Platinum I have rattled my brain trying to decided with new 3 too add, and there are 4 kits that interest me, but I am still uncertain. I think I will just sit on the option to download, and register as soon as I redeem against Cakewalk. There are apparently more kits planned for the year, so have some in the bank could make for a pleasant purchase when something comes along.
