bitflipper RE: Millenials I try to be a mentor to my 14-year-old grandson. He has enormous potential, gets good grades and wants to be an engineer (a real one, not the knob-twisters who call themselves engineers). He's polite and intelligent, doesn't get into trouble, a model student. The problem is that he has the attention span of a gnat. I blame it on 24x7 entertainment. Even television is too great a commitment for him; he rarely sits through an entire movie (unless I've paid for it, in which case I feel entitled to insist on it). YouTube's 10-minute standard seems to be about his limit, and even then he often clicks on something else before it'd done. He's got a smartphone, a tablet and a laptop and one of them is fired up at all times. Extended conversations are nearly impossible, except on camping trips and only after he's gone through no-signal withdrawal. I've tried to explain to him that lack of focus is going to be his greatest hurdle in pursuing a technical career. That he's going to have to read some pretty dense books, pay attention to sometimes-boring lectures, and often defer instant gratification when designing and testing things. But my voice is but a whisper in the storm of incessant digital input.
I must admit that the explosion of online culture has played havoc with my attention span. I've always had a bit of mild ADD but these days I have to watch movies in 30 minute chunks and I find it difficult to do anything online without getting distracted. For instance I will sit down to get stuck into a Groove3 course and literally 5 seconds after the first video has started I will think "Oooh I just remembered I meant to read the reviews of that stapler on Amazon" and before you know it I have another 15 tabs open.

I always use Chrome but sometimes I will "break out" a tab into a new window and start filling that with tabs as well. It's a mess.

I occasionally pull in assistants for recording jobs, and I find it can go either way with young people. Certainly, ones straight out of college can often be a bit shocked at what a solid day's work actually is. Especially at the level I'm currently working at, which is very long days with not much in the way of breaks, and a lot of constant pedal-to-the-floor graft. On the other hand, you will get some who are so keen to get a break, they'll work til they drop, and you actually have to make them slow down and take a break. That's a side point however. I was posting because I've been thinking about how to pull in older people. And I think one way of doing this, without falling foul of any regulations, is to put something in the ad along the lines of "we are keen to interview anyone who is suitable for this job, regardless of age or background". I think what happens with older people is that they get so used to being treated as washed up, they talk themselves out of applying for things. Like "they'll not want me showing up". I think giving a clear and honest indication that they're welcome would likely go a long way. Not tried this myself yet, but I think I will the next time there's a budget for an assistant.

Don't forget the "greatest generation", our parents and grand parents who lived well but spent all the money they inherited from their grand parents, their parents, all the money they saved and in some cases started in on our money and our children's money. The retire in style generation. I loved my parents but really... mom was a "stay at home" wife. We had a maid a couple days a week, dad had a small exterminating business back when most businesses were small and local. That was a one time generation thing, the retire and live like you still have a good job for 30 more years... and what really burns me is that they totally didn't watch the federal government with SSI. My dad, in his 90s, was still convinced that the government had all the SSI money in a "lock box". They didn't mind the store, let education go to hell, and I'm not giving a moral opinion here, just a fact... they let abortion take away millions of people who would be working, buying, and selling and just contributing to an economy in general, there would be a lot more demand so there would be more jobs to supply the demand here, not in Asia. A lot of what is wrong with millennials is that they have not had to work and many settle for "living in the basement". People are not owed anything that belongs to someone else. I had a dream about three days ago. A big crowd of people and the president (a generic president, I didn't see a face). He told the huge crowd of people that our money is now worth nothing. Then, and I have no idea what this means) someone asked him what was wrong with his shoe. One shoe looked perfect, the other looked like some sort of thin slipper thing with the sole worn out. Then I looked and one of my shoes had a new looking sole but the other was completely worn out. We were then trying to get away. Could just be a dream but it didn't seem like it. There are dreams and then there are dreams, if you know what I mean. Some you know are just dreams, others you know are different. This one was different. There is no substitute for work. My wife's grandfather was a farmer but there was a time he needed work. There were no jobs. He went to Flowers Bakery in the next town and asked for work. They said they had nothing. He looked at the warehouse and told them it was a mess. He offered to work a week cleaning it up and if they liked what he did they could pay him or send him on his way. They agreed and he did a good job and got hired. I don't think many millennials would consider doing something like that. J

Sharke, you should ask for a hand written job application, in cursive. You'll save yourself some time and trouble. BTW, our local schools no longer teach cursive. My wife went back to college in the 90s, she got a masters degree in 4 years. When she first began I remember the stories about all the freshmen who could not write a complete sentence. That is appalling. I was a "C" and "D" student back in the 60s but I picked up more and know more than today's "A" student because they actually taught so much more. Math of any kind was always alien to me. I never got it but in my 30s I made myself memorize tables etc. I was always able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide with pencil and paper and still can but I always had trouble knowing off the top of my head. I'm wandering again... all I meant to say is to ask for a hand written application with some sections that require writing out some thoughts. You will cull out a lot of people right there. I heard somewhere recently about an employer doing that. I'm talking to someone tomorrow beginning the process of selling my business. I am glad. J

Back in the late 90s in NY I taught English 1&2 at Brooklyn College - required, 1st year courses needed to graduate. Several of the worse students I had were "Education" students in their graduate year. They couldnt even right a gud sentence, nuch less papar (this was before computers and spell check but we did have dictionaries). I got to hear all about how I ruined their lives when I didn't pass them, since they would have to take summer school. I thought I was saving lives - 30 at a time in public schools, but I guess I didn't. That being said, anyone coming of age in this century has an uphill climb. The stock market ain't really worth anymore than it was in 1999, the medium income is stuck in 2007 and middle-class wealth has actually gone down. And to get there we've borrowed $36,000 in every citizen's name and those that are working need to pay their almost $2000 in taxes for servicing just that part of the debt (I've always like that phase, "servicing," which sounds like exactly what it is in economic terms). Hard to blame that on any other generation as you shave in the morning (or put on lip gloss). @
https://soundcloud.com/a-pleasure-dome http://www.bnoir-film.com/ there came forth little children out of the city, and mocked him, and said unto him, Go up, thou bald head; go up, thou bald head. 24 And he turned back, and looked on them, and cursed them in the name of the Lord. And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them.

You re right about that. We are all people and most of the time we are like water and will take the course of least resistance however some more than others. We surely all need to pay more attention to what the clowns in government are doing. A lot of the problem is that holding someone accountable for their decisions has become politically incorrect, but people ARE responsible for most of what they are or are not, what they have or don't have. Society and those who came before hold some responsibility for the lack of education that younger people have and for leaving them in debt before they even begin working. I remember telling my wife some 40 odd years ago that we have two choices. We can be dishonest and get what we can however we can or we can be as honest as possible and work hard enough to earn enough for us and at least one other household. I was wrong... it is more like three or four other households... but it is just the way of the world. We are all very small cogs in a very large wheel. 200 years ago a person, an average person could make a difference. These days not so much. Even after WW II Truman was known for morning walks around Washington D.C., by himself and would stop to talk with people. I remember when you could just walk up and enter the congress and go up into the balcony. I was young at that time and ran every step to the top of the Washington monument. I don't even think you can go up there now and you certainly can't just walk up and go into the capital building. The White House was known as The People's House and people who wanted to talk to the president would go in and sit outside the oval office, and it wasn't that long ago. Things have changed in MANY ways over the last 40 to 50 years. Too many people in too small a space, the world has gotten too small too. I am convinced that these same people who don't want to work will be the first to come try to take what they want from those who did work when the poo hits the fan... and it will. Anyway, yeah. We are all to blame but what can we do? Does it help to vote? I don't know anymore. Do we just stay as prepared as we can without becoming a prepper? They will be the first to fall because they are making themselves a prime target. If there is ever an EMP attack and you have an old car, pre-computer, it will surely get you killed if you drive it... I am going to ask a question in it's own thread about that because I am curious about what people think. J

Two possible reasons for this mess as I see it. Firstly, as others have said, the age of the participation trophy sent kids on a downward spiral. Whichever idiots were resonsible for this philosophical shift have it totally ass backwards. They see success as a product of self-esteem when in actual fact it's the other way around - self-esteem is a product of success. You have kids walking around who think that everything they do is earth-shatteringly awesome simply by virtue of them having done it. Instant recipe for all kinds of douchebag type behavior. Secondly, I really think that the popular culture being propagated by modern TV and social media is turning people into giant asswipes. First of all you have this celebrity culture consisting of the most infernal, talentless, godawful cretins who seem to be famous for being famous. TV has been infested with these idiotic reality shows in which these pointless, narcissistic morons are hoisted from obscurity, thrown onto TV shows and encouraged to behave like self centered, confrontational, finger wagging douchebags to one another, and they become national stars because of it. Kids are watching shows like this and figuring that they too can achieve the heights of stardom without actually achieving anything difficult or developing any talent. Just strut around like a toddler on PCP and hey presto, instant notoriety and boundless wealth. So that's how they behave, just like the gormless reality TV heroes they strive to be. These "celebrities" are much closer and far more accessible to the masses than celebs of the past were, because of the interaction they have with their fans on Twitter and Instagram. They're shooting photos of themselves using the same corny Instagram filters as everyone else and that blurs the line even more. Look at the way teenagers (and even people in their 20's and 30's) pose for photos now. Hands on hips, duck face monstrosities. It's the drug-addicted society girl/anorexic fashion model look. Everyone thinks they're a celeb. It's no wonder these kids can't hold down a job, they clearly think work is beneath them.

Here's a "reality" show that I'd probably watch... Invite all the useless asshats that you referenced above to participate in a new popularity show that's guaranteed to be seen and talked about. Then have them all stand on a platform in the middle of a lake that's actually filled with hungry crocodiles. Have a "platform malfunction" and, there you go! Instant hit!

Where do I sign up to pull the lever? One thing I'm noticing more and more with job applicants is that they give you this really haphazard schedule of what hours they can work, as if they fully expect to have those hours accommodated. So I'll get: "I can work Tuesday mornings between 9:45 and 11:15, Wednesday afternoons between 3:15 and 5:30, Thursday lunchtimes and Saturday evenings. Do you have anything with those hours?" I swear, this is not an exaggeration.

It's not flexitime and I give them no indication whatsoever that it's a job with flexible "come as you please" hours. People generally understand that "Mon-Fri full time" does not mean "whatever days and times you feel like" or "every single hour from Mon-Fri." At least people with common sense do.

I don't hire anyone who doesn't know how to spell "you" either Have you ever run a business or hired anyone backwoods? There is a general level of common sense beneath which an employee will cause you constant stress, create more work for you, lose you customers and in some cases bring liability issues which cost you tens of thousands of dollars. This is a pretty straightforward job but requires self-motivation (I can't observe them all day - take note of that part), initiative and common sense (i.e. the ability to think on their feet and deal with problems intelligently). Yes, you would think that such people were easy to find. And at one time, they were. This is my whole point. They are becoming harder and harder to find. Think how you'd feel, if you'd sifted through useless applicant after useless applicant, and someone insinuated that there must be something wrong with you. It's not just me, I have friends and associates in the same business (and other types of businesses) who are reporting exactly the same thing.

I suppose you're joking...but taking care of someone's pet is right up there with taking care of their children. Pretty friggin important. From most of Sharke's history of posts one gets the sense that he takes his responsibilities very seriously...and that he expects his employees to do the same. Kudos to him.

Thank you! People don't realize how stressful it is....put it this way, given the stress/profit ratio of this business, you have to really want to work with animals. It was one thing back when I worked alone, but once I started hiring people and had them out there on the busy streets of Manhattan, entrusted not just with people's apartment keys but with the pets they are nuts about, the stress factor increased 100 fold. You're constantly worried about things going wrong out there. Every day I have to deal with all sorts of crap ranging from employees stuck on subways to difficult doormen who suddenly take it upon themselves to tell the walker who's been coming every day for the past year that he doesn't recognize him and that he won't let him upstairs. And then of course there are difficult dogs, sometimes awkward, sometimes temperamental, sometimes aggressive. You have chihuahuas who run under the bed and won't come out and bite anyone who goes anywhere near them, you have dogs who keep putting the brakes on for no good reason, you arrive to dogs having made a mess, or sick dogs, or dogs who don't like it when you reach underneath them to fasten a harness. And then there's the clients - there are people who think the world revolves around them, make all sorts of impossible demands, scream at you at the slightest provocation and then threaten to trash you online over some stupid $5 dispute with their invoice despite the fact you've given them flawless, reliable service for 3 or more years. So believe me - good, solid, reliable employees are a must. I had a bad employee a couple of years ago who almost caused me a nervous breakdown (I ended up with pre-hypertension). You have to deal with employment laws which are weighted ferociously against the employer to the point where you can't even fire someone for gross incompetence. But the mutts make it all worthwhile! And believe it or not, I actually really get a sense of satisfaction from providing people with a living. It's nice when they give you good service in return.

backwoods well, why cant u get anyone then? everyone is crap? if u cant hire anyone to be a dog babysitter i wouldnt hire u :)
It's not just me, I have friends and associates in the same business (and other types of businesses) who are reporting exactly the same thing.
yep, i hire the top ppl for my firm... an ad goes out, people answer, screeners winnow the chaff, i interview EVERYONE who remains. i get final call... millenials can be hired. work on your conditions if only idiots apply... good luck.

What do you mean "work on your conditions"? I'm pretty much limited in how much I can pay for the kind of work that it is. There is a market rate for some kinds of work. I can't pay the kind of wage that attracts "top people." If I could pay $2000/week for a dog walking position then I'm sure I would have a wider pick of the bunch. As it is, the maximum rate that I can pay is limited by the kind of rates that I can charge for my services, which in turn are determined by lots of factors not least of which is the rate people are willing to pay to have their dogs walked. So you know, it's not a highly paid job. But then again, it's a lot better than the minimum wage too. It's the kind of work that traditionally suits young people who are relatively new to the job market, or people who are in a relationship in which their "other half" makes most of the money. I didn't say I can't find anyone - if I couldn't, then I wouldn't be in business now because I wouldn't have any employees. My point is that it's getting harder and harder to find good employees for this kind of work. I did lower paid work when I was just starting out, it's all part of the job ladder, especially when you have few formal qualifications. You have to prove that you can stick a job out, be reliable, show up on time etc. That experience and those references get you the next job, hopefully better than your last one. The salient point here is that 10 years ago, it was a lot easier to find good employees. Now there is a lot more "chaff" to sift through. A LOT more. I'm a member of a closed forum where people in the same biz as me get together and talk. Everyone's having the same issues. It's not that there are no good workers out there, it's just that they're increasingly few and far between. Surveys of employers nationwide generally say the same thing.
