After hearing the bazillionth mix massacred by Ozone, I've decided to create my own starter preset.

Hey, who said you could listen to my mixes?

Thanks Jonas.

Thanks Jonas.........for this post and the one you made a while back about the
KRK ST8's .... I just got a pair and they are perfect... i said perfect !!!!
Mark F.

Well, I don't know if I'd take it quite that far, but they're certainly terrific speakers. I know that I've spent many times the ST8s price on other speakers and have been far less satisfied. IMO they can't be beat at their price point.

I'm a notorious speaker Nazi (wanted in several states) and I carry a pair of these when I go to different studios just so that I can orient my ear to something that is good and I'm familiar with. They sound great and they're cheap enough that if I kill 'em or spill some Diet Coke on them during my commute I won't cry my eyes out.

Have you had a chance to check out the new Event speakers? The two reviews I've read were possitively gushing. They read really impressively, but you know, who reads speakers?

I have the EZ8s and I think they sound great. But what do I know?

Hello,

I tried to listen to your examples on your http://www.audiorecordingandservices.com demo page. I get 404 errors. Is the page down?

Also, thankyou for your comments on the songs thread.

All that said, I've gotta say that you have considerable recording skills. Tracking a large ensemble like that is one of the most diffucult things to do well and you've done a smashing job! I'd love to hear what you could do with typical rock-oriented instrumentation.

Update: The other tunes I was going to put up for everyone to hear have been put on the back burner. I am currently trying to finish another CD by June 20th. It's music from our new show.

The new Event Studio Precision monitors are lovely. I liked the sound of the 6-inch better than the 8-inch. A pair of the 6-inch passives can be had for about $500/pair.

I'm having a little trouble coordinating between my web server and my ftp location. I'll get this resolved soon. The upside is that my ftp server is working...for now.

I forgot to ask in my post last night about the harmonic enhancement module. I notice you left it off in your preset. I've never been able to get it adjusted to produce anything that I liked, even at very low levels. After listening to a song with it a few times, I decided to just leave it off. I've tried a few more times, but if I get enough of it in the signal to tell a difference, it sounds too distorted, not warm.

The exciter and widener modules within Ozone are left turned off on my preset intentionally. VERY intentionally!

Jonus,

You are the truth man! Thanks for all of the valuable advise you add to this forum. I like your approach, it's not at all a know it all or wanna be subject matter expert type, but rather authenticand humble. Your willingness to help other is awesome and no matter what other think in this forum, it is an excellent way to learn. Hell even if you don't, can't or won't mix or master your own recordings, understanding how thing work help you record better if nothing else or even insure that engineer is giving you what you want or your telling him what he needs to hear. One stop producers are on the rise! A producer now almost has to be one that can write the song, record it, mix it, and then, thats right be foolish enough t master it! Thanks again Jonas for helping me be a further fool. I'm going to mix and master away! (lol)

Yes, thanks! I just bought Ozone and have discovered that the pre-sets are extreme to say the least - something to impress the casual listener, but not serious mastering settings. I've also discovered that less is more.

I will try out your settings - I'll probably have to adjust levels, etc.

I also have as a goal for this summer to get one of my songs pro-mastered; you can bet that I will come knocking on your virtual door.

Thanks!

It was a princely gift.. unfortunately, it won't show up in my Ozone 2.

But I did glean some good ideas from the pdf you had.

Do you know that as I'm getting better at mixing/mastering, I can't stand what I've already recorded? I can hear all that crap I left on there!! It's a long long way from the 4 track..

The preset was created using Ozone 3. I guess that the preset isn't backwards compatible. Time for an upgrade?

Hey Jonas - quick question for you:

Is it your contention that two-band compression works better than 3 or 4 band compression for most mixes?

Yes. I generally don't use more than 2 bands unless I'm going after a noise floor with multiband downward expansion. It's really my personal preference, not a rule written in stone somewhere. I prefer to do the "balancing-act" with EQ.

I've found that muliband compression can be useful on individual instruments tracks.

Such a generous gift, Jonas, to the masses who cannot mix, let alone try their hand at mastering. That is like getting the cart before the cart isn't it?!

Oh well.... To each their own.

This is PRECISELY the type of professional arrogance that has kept me working hard and spending money on my gear to learn the craft. Thank you for the reminder, Chaz.

Hi Jonas,

Another quick question:

Do you feel that Ozone 3 (while often abused by amateurs) has the sonic quality necessary for pro mixes? In other words, if used correctly, can it be the tool of choice for pro's?

If so, does it make any difference whether it is used in ProTools or in say, a less expensive application such as WaveLab?

Thanks again,

pdarg

Jonas,

I am also one who was surprised by the extremeness of the Ozone suite, but as pdarg asked, if in the right hands can it be a good tool? I have heard so many folks in this forum glorifying Ozone. This is one of the reasons I got it. A friend of mine just got the yamaha final master and pitch fix, from what I heard it sounds pretty good. What is your opinion if any on using it for mastering, it has a much cleaner sound than Ozone, not as gritty or muddy.

Hey Jona--

Any reason the cwp template shouldn't work in Sonar 2.2?

It's saying it's not a recognized Sonar file and I thought maybe I need Sonar 3 to use it.

Thanks,

Okay, I just got home and am working with the pre-set now.

Some surprises here. Most mastering tutorials talk about boosting above about 12k - here we see a cut, which is quite different.

The cut seems to really help me with any sibilance or harsh overtones, however. I would have never thought of trying this. I did move and adjust it a bit, but kept the overall concept.

Still working with the 2-band as opposed to the four band. Right now, what I can do with 4 bands seems to sound better, but I'll keep working with it.

The high cut tip alone was worth the price of admission. Thanks!

Although you can get perfectly acceptable results with it, I won't be throwing away my analog gear anytime soon. You can get a more depth once you get away from the digital domain.

Assuming that you've got a decent room/speakers and an experienced ear Ozone wil get you 85% "there" for about 5% of the price. The Waves stuff will get you 90% there. Considering the cost of Ozone, it's a terrific bargain.

I am extremely unimpressed by Yamaha (or in Texas, they call it "Yahama") Final Master. I think that Digital Fish Phones' Endorphin is better and it's free.

There's nothing innately gritty or muddy about Ozone. Me thinks it's user error.
