Some surprises here. Most mastering tutorials talk about boosting above about 12k - here we see a cut, which is quite different.
The high cut tip alone was worth the price of admission. Thanks!

One sonic disaster averted. Mission accomplished!

Seriously though, the 6db guide and the "pink" guide are terrific a terrific help for guitar players who have lost all hearing above 5kHz. More treble, more treble, more....

The darker top end makes for a richer overall sound and it should help it sound good and less fatiguing at louder volumes.

Any reason the cwp template shouldn't work in Sonar 2.2?
It's saying it's not a recognized Sonar file and I thought maybe I need Sonar 3 to use it.

It was authored in Sonar 3 and it uses the Sonitus fx plugins quite a bit. I'm afraid you're out of luck this time.

Such a generous gift, Jonas, to the masses who cannot mix, let alone try their hand at mastering. That is like getting the cart before the cart isn't it?!

Oh well.... To each their own.

This is PRECISELY the type of professional arrogance that has kept me working hard and spending money on my gear to learn the craft. Thank you for the reminder, Chaz.

Jonas, I just A/B'ed your preset against the one I had been using on my latest track. I did tweak yours just a bit, setting up four channels of multiband compression versus two. I'm quite impressed with the results, though.

I think the best way to describe this mix is "a place for everything, and everything in its place." When I listened to the version that had been done in my old (four band everything, excitation, boost, etc.) it sounded very much over the top and the highs were very brittle and harsh to my ears.

I'd definitely say I got a more polished, professional sounding result with your preset as a starting point.

I feel like I may need to go back and just tweak the highs just a bit, but this is very good as-is, IMO.

Thank you very much for taking the time to do this and for sharing it with the rest of us!

My preset is almost embarrasingly simple. One thing that I neglected to mention about using the multiband compressor with my preset: Once the thresholds are set, you can use the gain sliders for the lower and upper bands like a master bass/treble control. This detail may not be obvious to Ozone novices.

Word!

All you have to do is go back and read all of the countless posts made on the CW forum regarding someone asking basic fundamental Mixing 101 and/or 102 questions, who then in the same breath want to learn how to master as well. So, there is a great deal of validity to my statement!

FTR.... Though I am a professional, I am definitely not arrogant! What I am though, is very, very experienced and my comments come from that experience. If you ever get to the point in your career that I have obtained in mine, then you will understand. Then again.... Maybe you won't.

How about some good old fashioned "good news" for a change. Bush says that he intends to funnel a bunch of money into Iraq to boost the economy, rebuild the infrastructure, and create jobs, while also creating a safe and secure environment and bringing democracy to the Iraqi people.

No, I know, you've heard that. Thats not the good news. The good news is, if it works over there, Bush is considering trying the same thing here. Cool, huh.

Thanks Jonas!

But I'm a little confused on the JA mixing template.cwt file. When I open in in Sonar 3.0, all of the eq's are set exactly the same for every channel. Am I missing something, or did your template not include any eq tweaking?

Thanks!

Wally, when I open the template, there's EQ on every channel. I wonder if it's a 3.0 thing or a bad download?

chaz, as long as computers and software are with us and afforable to the masses, those masses will continue, anwaiveringly, to tread down the do-it-yourselfer highway. some will stuble, some will fall, some will completeley spill into the ditch and some, thru blood, sweat and tears, will suceed with great results. what you replied to ZENDIN AND STRATTON about the point in your career you've reached and the understanding that accompanies this, i fully appreciate and agree with. what you must accept however, is that my opening statement in this reply is REALITY. On a similar subject: I'm not familiar with it, but I've heard that the L1 or L2 manual suggests ridiculously squashed settings. You'd hope that people would stray beyond the presets and factory "usage suggestions," but it sure doesn't sound like it. I recently read about a very well-known mix engineer putting an L1 or L2 on every instrument in the mix!

So basically...for once, I hope no one reads the manual. ; )

I think of the records I like that were mastered by people with worse gear than I have.. Then I think I don't know who you are at all.

That's certainly a good suggestion, but certainly not a rule. I think that only in once case did I create a boost that went beyond +6dB. However, you will find that I made numerous cuts of -18 dB.

It should be emphasized that these are just the starting points for the sculpture. In many cases they may be completely inappropriate for the source material.

The ear is still the final judge. In all things musical if it sounds good, it IS good!

"What a guy that Jonas is!

FWIW, my recommendation for home-mastering is to put the whole mix through several stages of BBE, a brick wall limiter, and a guitar emulator set to "British Funk" for that extra bit of tube warmth."

Golly ... that sounds like a winner to me ... but what EXACTLY is "British Funk"?
