What amuses me is that prior to X1 there where just so many complaints about the GUI being tired and out of date. How it slowed workflow. Yes X1 has been a radical change and it takes some effort to get to grips with it and yes there is some functionality that is a pain, global snap is my pet hate, but it does work and once you try it is worth the effort. Mick Moreau With the help of the X-1 Power book I was able to get a lot done much faster than I thought. Thanks, Mick! I don't know how anyone "experienced" can be immediately appalled at X1's basic GUI. It's very similar to Protools. Minus the bugs (that I still get with X1b, no real game-breakers though), I totally love this DAW.

X1 is awesome. It is sick!! I love it. I am sure I will never learn to use all the features they have crammed into X1 but it is good to know that they are there if I ever need them. I finished X1 Explained from Groove 3 last night and there were a few things toward the end that were (to me) like the adults talking in some Peanuts/Charlie Brown cartoon... (wah waa waaa whaaa wha waaaa) but when I get to the point where I need the functions, I am sure I will figure it out and I'll be glad they are there. I am going to start the Tips and Tricks videos today and install the Octa-Capture. Not liking X1 is not an option for me. I comitted to it and I am going to learn it and love it, failure is not an option... neither is not liking it. I LOVE it!!! Julien

Jimbo 88 It just seems like these type of threads are not ligit. Someone shows up with no posts claiming "DAW X" is way better. Smells like radu is just marketing someone else's product. It's comments like this that drive people away from here who have legitimate concerns that may provide input to make the software better. Would it have been more legit to you if Frank Haas started the thread? He agreed with the OP but he's been here since 2005? He jumped right on it, first response to the OP, but I don't see you putting him down? Personally, I don't like X1 now that I've used it for a few months. Even though it came out in 12/10, it's really only been usable for the last couple of months, and now that I've really gotten to know it, they've changed too much of what drew me to Sonar in the first place and it's something different now that I don't care for. @Wookie: I'm sure you could find a few examples of people complaining about 8.5's gui and workflow, but nothing like compared to X1.

radu789 Sorry is just my opinion .. i just have a personal feeling that cakewalk are loosing something, because for to many years they keep the same product and the same logic behind the product and suddenly they change everything . This is normal ?. I mean is like you trust a product and suddenly the company say " hey that 8.5 was not really great so we have rebuilt the entire program using a new workflow . Sorry for the inconvenience . But now you must learn again how to use Sonar" ... So i really don't understand why so many changes . Why not only a few ??. Why so many ??. Because 8.5 was really bad ??. Something stinks here radu, It isn't normal at ALL that a DAW would change its interface and you have every right to be confused and angry about the changes. They made a pretty big decision and took a pretty large risk that they would alienate long term users in the short term while investing in a new interface for the long term. Don't sweat it, you're not the only one who doesn't like X-1 but as was said earlier there's a seat for every a$$ and you'll find one that fits yours. I took to the X1 interface right away because I wasn't an expert at 8.53 and could NEVER figure out the icon soup of 8.53. Others have long since left X1 in disgust, never to return. If you read the tenor if this entire thread you'll find a quite a few people who didn't like X1 at first but have learned to like it - even more than 8.5. I don't have any interest in which DAW you use - just sayin'.

garrigus SONAR X1 is very capable of competing with all the other DAWs out there as long as you take the time to learn the new workflow. Scott -- Scott R. Garrigus * Author of the Cakewalk Sonar and Sony Sound Forge Power book series: http://www.garrigus.com/ * Author of the Cakewalk Sonar ProAudioTutor video tutorial series: http://www.proaudiotutor.com/ * Publisher of the DigiFreq free music technology newsletter: http://www.digifreq.com/digifreq/ * Publisher of the NewTechReview free consumer technology newsletter: http://www.newtechreview.com/newtechreview/ Actually I don't think it is!!!! For one where is VST 3 and I know I will be hounded down for this but, from what I am reading (I am yet to make the change but I will in the future because of the new functions in Cubase) VST 3 creams all over VSt 2. For one when the VST instrument or effect is not in use it turns off using less CPU. Now I don't know about you I think this is a big step forward. Secondly VST 3 allows you to use any effect that uses the VST 3 protocol as a multi-in out plug-in, meaning you don't have to have special 5.1 plugs. I think those two things alone creams VST2 and Sonar. Not enough have you seen the new score interface and new extended functions in the piano roll, to be able to write in legato strings and individually change notes so it starts off soft, then gets louder, then legato it into the next string. Ok I am not explaining it very well but I think you get my point, being able to edit individual notes so they behave in a more realistic manner is the holy grail!!!!. Sonar has sold us down the river!!!! but, but once they admit what they have done which is reposition itself in the DAW market and once they come clean and say now Sonar X1 has been designed with a specific purpose in mind, that is a product that is similar to live but even now way superior to Alberton (ok they have to fix the audio engine) then I can forgive the company because as a live instrument SONAR will cream anything else but lets get this straight, it is and has been designed for that purpose. They have said so with the latest round of advertising, although they also say you can use it as a studio but as I say it is not a studio instrument anymore. This is the fundamental that we are not getting and understanding, we and me included complain about various DAW's and their flaws but we need to look at this concept at little different. One DAW are instruments, not just something to record with and not just something to mix or compose on. It is an entire eco system if we include the computer and interface. This is why you have so many angry customers; it's like asking Mozart who has learnt the violin knows the shape of the violin and knows all the nuances of that instrument. Mozart's violin breaks, he goes to the music store asks for a violin and the store owner says they no longer make that sort of violin, here is the new one. Imagine Mozart a great violinist having to reacquaint himself with this strange and new instrument, I think you get my drift. If we understand that concept, which is the one of the DAW as an instrument the next logical step is to start looking at each DAW as a different sounding studio. So just as in the 60's we had ABBEY ROAD, Trident and lets say Capital. We now have Logic, Cubase and Sonar. So whilst I do not like the fact that Sonar has sold us down the river, I can understand the reason. I just want Sonar now to put everything right by GIVING US SOME TRUTH. If as I believe Sonar are heading the way I have stated, that is Sonar is becoming a live/studio crossover. Then focus on the live instrument, fix the audio engine and give Alberton a run for its money but don't leave us 8.5 users in the mud. Give us two products, I am happy to use X1 in the future when I start to design a live show but for serious composition I will have to turn to Cubase, it is just a pity that Sonar has the best mixing interface in the business and it is a pity that it has now been planted in the Multi-Dock and not a separate screen that I could easily access by a simple push of a button. I'm pretty sure you can pull the mixing console out of the multi dock and plant it on your second monitor. I put a lot of stuff on my second monitor. I could be wrong though. I haven't personally had a plugin that I needed that doesn't have a VST2 version. I'm not sure what the benefits with VST3 really are. In regards to the CPU usage, I just freeze my synths / tracks when I run out of CPU. Since upgrading to a core i7 with 8 GB of ram, I haven't run into resource problems where I needed to do that though :). I'm curious about your legato comments. That sounds really interesting. I absolutely hate X1's piano roll and especially that it uses the same snap settings as the main view. I'm adjusting, but I totally feel you on that one.

Well that was a bizarre rant for a first post BenMMusTech. "Sold us down the river"? Seriously? As far as I know that means 'cheated' or 'betrayed' and I don't think CW have done any such thing. They run a business, they sell software, if you like it you can buy it, but you're not obliged to or anything - and they are certainly under no obligation to design their software or run their business according to your or my or anyone's preference. It's nice that they talk to us and fix bugs and even implement feature requests sometimes, but they don't really have to - anymore than you have to buy their products. I also find it funny to demand that they 'GIVE US SOME TRUTH' - it sounds like you're already pretty sure what's going on, and anything they said would only be 'TRUTH' to you if it happened to confirm your preformed opinion. I do like the sound of Alberton, though, whoever they might be. Oh, and Josh is correct - the console isn't locked to the Multidock, it can be floated as a separate view just like always if you like it that way. As can most other things, with the exception of the Synth Rack - which I think should be discretized from the Browser too.

But that's my point I don't have a multi monitor and I don't need one. I use an 80 cm monitor, why do I need two and then there are those that are using a laptop and as I say if this is suppose to be used live (Sonar) you are not going to be carting multiple monitors around. This is not my first post I have been using this software since 2002 or 1 (I am not a troll or a stooge, I am not trying to sell some other piece of software) as for the truth statement rather than just have a big advertising campaign saying "When Worlds Collide" give us some explanation as to why? Explain to the the loyal users why we have to have this change. As I have stated and you seam to have brushed (subtlearts) over, I use my DAW as an instrument and look at my DAW as an instrument. Sonar was familiar and I could play it, maybe not as good as Mozart but I could play it, now I have a new instrument that is nothing like the old instrument. THIS IS NOT GOOD FOR MUSIC!!!!!! If Mozart learnt the Violin and became the best at it, then as I have already stated he goes into a music store needing a new Violin but can't get the one that he has learnt on and indeed has to learn a new and alien Violin and he has to do this every time HOW CAN THIS BE GOOD FOR MUSIC?? As for VST 3, imagine you are composing a symphony or you are sequencing the glorious ninth by Beethoven but you have to check what you have sequenced ah but there is a mistake. Having to go back and freeze the track and then unfreeze the track to fix sequencing mistakes takes time. With VST 3 and this is from my understanding not actual experience you would not have to do this because the instrument or the effect that is tipping you over the power edge would be turned off. Handy Huh!!!!

This is subject is like a dead horse. Once I got used to X1 (been using Sonar since it was called Cakewalk), it's the same old reliable for me. Sure, did I have to find stuff (like the PROJECT OPTIONS are gone but they are under PREFERENCES now), but actually I think that I am now more productive than I ever was with Sonar 8.5.3. Just my 2 cents. Jim PS - if you don't like it, don't use it.

Sounds cool, but I'm not so sure it works that way. Something doesn't add up. It sounds like VST3 just has the same capability of freezing built in. To each is own. I don't have a problem with freezing. I actually us it in unconventional ways. Like I use Serafine FX tron for foley FX. I'll get the right sound, freeze the track, move the frozen wave to a standard audio track, and then unfreeze. This grants me a quick bounce for the sample so I can easily move on to the next sample. Sounds like you need to just stick with Sonar 8.x. If you're that dependent on changes not happening. I can understand the frustration.

You don't need to use multiple monitors. You can undock the console by right-clicking on the tab in the multidock selector and choosing 'undock' and it will be in its own window like before, which is what you requested. When I referenced your post, in the profile section it said 'Total Posts: 1'. Now it says 2. Sorry for making the assumption, but... it was actually your first post with this profile, so... I don't mean to say that you don't necessarily have one or two salient points, but the reality is that this is what CW have done. They did explain fairly clearly in the pre-release marketing stuff that this was a radical change, and the new version number system reflects that. 8.53 was a pretty stable version so if you feel you can't adjust to the new system, you can stick with the old one if it worked well for you. However, they are under no obligation to maintain two streams and I think there's a near-zero chance that they will suddenly decide to do so; it seems a little pointless to keep thrashing that horse. X1 is really not all that different under the surface, and many people have adjusted to it easily and well, myself included. I don't mean to belittle the concerns of those who haven't or can't, but I do think there are better things to do than scream and shout about it, such as for instance digging in and getting used to the new system - or a competitor, if you prefer (as you seem to indicate).

I am not screaming and shouting I am just saying that I like my Violin the way it was, I know all about the Multi Dock but all they have done is added an extra process where once I could press 1,2 or 3 and go to the screen that I wanted, yes I know all about screen sets and all that, once again though I just want my old violin. It is all well and good to say keep using 8.5 but at some point in time 8.5 becomes obsolete and this could be because Windows introduces a new operating system and 8.5 is no longer supported or I buy a new interface and 8.5 is no longer supported, you get my drift. My plan now is to treat each DAW as a different instrument and or as a different studio. This is the future, it's just a pity that one DAW manufacture can't make one really great DAW so it would not be necessary to do this but on saying that this new paradigm the one where each DAW is a different studio or instrument may in fact be great because it goes along way to destroying homogenized music. I need tape speed effects, OK I am going to have to use Reaper or Studio One (not a MAC or LOGIC man) these programs will give a different sound to Sonar (this is something that has been discussed and one that no one has quite proved but each DAW has a distinct sound). I need to compose an orchestral piece OK so I need Cubase. You get my drift!!!! This is the future, it is unfortunate that I need to spend $2000 or there abouts on at least three DAW's to get all the features that I need but that is where the industry is now. It's funny 10 years ago to get a full version of Cubase or Logic it cost $1500 dollars now you can pick these programs up for $500 but as I say you now need three DAW's at least to have a full kit of tools so in the end it still costs the same as it did 10 years ago. Conspiracy maybe!!!

I have been using Cakewalk/Sonar since it was a MIDI sequencer on Windows 3.1! I really like the Skylight interface in X1 better than any previous versions. Although there are things that annoy me and things that need to be fixed, I like Sonar's style and it has all the functions most users would need in a professional DAW. No matter your personal taste, I am kind of surprised by a comparison between Ableton live and Sonar since they are optimized for completely different types of projects.

I did notice that you didn't use any in your last one though. Thanks for that. The process of undocking the console from the Multidock should only need to be done once, assuming you save it to your project template(s), or once per project anyway. Then, once again, it will behave exactly as it used to. Really. I'm not going to continue arguing this with you beyond that. Music software is not really like a violin, so the metaphor is getting a bit strained. I know what you mean but the situation is what it is, CW have chosen their path and you can choose how to respond to it, and how to spend your energy that gives you the best return. Personally I'm not into tilting at windmills but I have come to accept that it's a big thing for a lot of people.

I am glad I like sonar - because the people who don't like sonar are all on their period.

mmmmmm...did anyone fall out of bed lately? Seems that some of us have....I kind of like the new way it is done BUT there are still some issues with it, obviously. In the noise and bickerfesting between bashers and fanbois...is there a tiny space left for those of us who like it yet can see room for improvement?
The space you have will always be exceeded in direct proportion to the amount of stuff you have...Thornton's Postulate. Bushpianos
