Yes sir it is by good ol' Simon! Buy this folks, he really knows his ****.

I wrote a few pages for it too....ok, more like 60. They deal with preset construction in Rapture. I think my chapter has been made available as a special download for those who purchase the book, along with a bunch of exclusive z3ta+ presets from Pro-Sounds.

Why is there a Juno in the cover? Well, I suppose it had to be a Roland.

Anyway, I have a couple questions:

    1) Are the P5 synths covered, or only z3ta+, DP, and Rapture? (I see Velocity on the cover)
    2) Does it come with a good, comprehensive sfz reference? (that alone would be worth the price)

Yes. Every Cakewalk/rgc:audio synthesizer is covered (including those bundled with Kinetic, Project5, and SONAR). In total, 21 synthesizers are covered.

Yes. The book comes with a comprehensive sfz reference.

There is one chapter dedicated to the sfz format and a separate appendix documents the full sfz format (including many previously unpublished opcodes). The book is approximately 700 pages long (480 pages in the printed version - the remaining 200+ pages come with the download materials). The sfz chapter is about 35 pages and the opcode listing is around 40 pages long (both are included in the printed part of the book). This should give you an indication of the relative significance of the sfz materials within the book.

We'll be posting up a table of contents and a few other bits over the next few days to give you a bit more insight into the book's contents.

Please click here for further details, purchase links, and to see the front cover.

Nice of you to show up, Simon.

I'm one of those who got the hi-res version of "How to make a noise". I already knew how to make a noise, but you're book is so good that I use it as a reference, so I'm definitely interested in this new book.

I wasn't aware of the SFZ reference in the book. Can't wait for this to show up so I can finally take full advantage of the format!

WOW! I've been asking for this for quite some time. It once more confirms the prudence of my choice to go with Rapture as my main synth. Now with Dimension Pro and Project 5 this book looks perfect. Thanks Simon et al. for putting it together for us.

In fact, if you want more information on this book than Amazon provides, go here:

    http://www.course.com/catalog/product.cfm?isbn=1-59863-314-7&CFID=17377206&CFTOKEN=91680413#DL

After checking out all of the information from the main page, click on the "Student Downloads" icon at the top of the page to download a sample chapter and comprehensive table of contents.

It looks like there are additional chapters available exclusively as downloads. Very cool. I can't think of any such book for competitors such as "Native Instruments' Synths", etc.

Simon, am I understanding it correctly: There are the book chapters in hard copy, and then some additional chapters that can be downloaded? How does that work? Does one have to register their book copy or something similar?

Whatever the case, I am thrilled about this book. I have been dreading (and putting off) learning Rapture and DimPro via experimentation. It's much more time-efficient to have a text. I may wait for Amazon to list Scott Garrigus' "Sonar 6 Power" and buy both at the same time to qualify for free shipping. That's a potent pair of primers!

    Yes, you are correct.

The printed book is about 480 pages and the download chapters are around 200 pages long. Also included with the download package are the example programs including those that make up the sound design master classes from several leading synthesizer programmers (Frank Genus, Francesco Silvestri, and Ruben Nievas).

There are two download links which are both listed in the book (one on my site, one on the publisher's site). There is no need for registration or anything like that: as far as I'm concerned, once you've paid for the book you should be able to get the downloads as quickly as possible and with minimum fuss.

That being said, if you let me have your email address (and there's a link for this on my download page) then I can keep you up-to-date about any changes or updates to the book as they become available (for instance, if/when Cakewalk release any new synthesizers).

    No, thank you, Francesco.

I learned a lot from all of the sound designers who got involved with the project (Francesco, Frank Genus, and Ruben Nievas). It was a pleasure to work with all of you. As the readers will see, each of you brought a different approach which was both interesting and musically useful.

    Yes. It's here.

Again, there already is a mailing list.

Anyone who gets the download package from my web site is encouraged to send me their email address (even if they're already on my mailing list). This way I can let these good people know about any changes or updates to the book as they become available (for instance, hopefully there will be an update if/when Cakewalk release any new synthesizers).

I don't intend to keep a separate forum for the book as I don't think it would reach critical mass. At best, such a forum would only detract from the official Cakewalk/rgc:audio forums which are excellent and well supported by users of the synthesizers. That being said, as you can see, I intend to pop in here quite often and you can always drop me an email through my web site.

Well it must be nice to order your book and actually receive it. Somebody literally went postal on mine . I ordered my copy from Buy.com the other day and when I received it, all I got was a torn empty package with a "Received Unsealed,Damaged & Without Contents" label affixed.

I guess I can take solace imagining that some disgruntled employee decided to rip up my book instead of shooting all his co-workers.
