aj you are a genius / God / top person. My BCR2000 has sat here for a while, getting an occasional use to tweak a filter, but not really using its full capacity or any of it really. The lights looked nice when I dimmed the studio lights, but that was about it. Now it is actually going to get used! Had bit of a problem with the top row, but in solving it, it made me delve into the BCR2000 a lot more. Nearly fell off my chair when the graphic appeared! Fantastic. I've found myself hoping 6.2 won't arrive today so that I tweak my new found best friend - BCR2000! One again thank you.

aj - thank you very much for all your hard work, and for making this available to SONAR users. I have put off buying a BCR2000 because there wasn't a decent control surface plugin, but now you've fixed that! :) I have a request for a future version, if you have the time. It would be great if (optionally) you could use the push function on the top row of rotaries, currently mapped to "record arm", to instead control which of the eight tracks the other rows of rotaries control. So on page 2, by pushing any of the top rotaries, you could use the rest of the rotaries to control EQ on whichever of the 8 tracks you wanted, and so on for the other pages. The way I usually mix is to focus on a few stems, set up as busses. I seldom have more than 8, so my preferred way of working would be to set the BCR to control the buses, and then not use the track scroll function at all. That way rotary 1 always controls bus 1, and so on - it's easier for me to remember where I am then! This change would allow me to control EQ and FX parameters for 8 busses without having to scroll. Anyway, thanks again, and even without this change you've made the BCR2000 a LOT more usable with SONAR. Cheers Alastair

That's certainly a very valuable suggestion, although I would personally miss record arm, it's something, though, that perhaps reflects my personal working habits. Having said that, version 1.1, which should be up on Sourceforge by tomorrow (just doing unit testing at present), supports, amongst other things, a function that you might find useful, namely, you can instantly make any track the leftmost track by just pressing shift+mute for the track in question. So if you have your busses in view, then you can select any one to work on by just pressing ctrl+mute for the buss in question. You would, of course, have to press the left bank switch once to get your busses lined up back where they were after you did that, so there is one extra keypress but this will still be simpler for you then having to scroll across a track at a time to get the particular buss on the left (and this is why I added the new feature, as I was finding it annoying as well). But I can also see the merit of your suggestion. Someone else suggested that the currently-selected Sonar track should automatically be the track on the control surface whose EQ and parameters were controlled on page 2 onward. However that has the unfortunate flaw that the control surface SDK only allows you to determine which TRACK is selected, and not, for some reason, as far as I can gather, which BUSS is selected, which means that paradigm would be pretty limited. I will have a think, though, because it occurs to me that I haven't used shift+record arm for anything just yet and could perhaps reassign record arm to that instead. The only (minor) complication is that that control is configured to be latching for those knobs; it'll have to be changed to momentary on, I think, but that's no big deal. Anyway, give 1.1 a try when its there and see what you think - I will download to SourceForge in about 10 hours from now after I get back from work and after I've tested the latest version on my other PC .

Thanks aj. I don't have a BCR2000 yet, although I'll try and get one this weekend. I'll let you know how I get on. The new feature to immediately make any bus the leftmost track sounds really useful. Looking forward to future versions. Cheers Alastair

FWIW - I had reported problems with this control surface plug-in that I have since resolved. It took a re-install of Sonar PE 5.2 but things are now working smoothly. I really have no idea what my issue was but the re-install cured it. Again, thanks for sharing this aj. I appreciate the functionality.

I hate to be the total dumpkoff in the bunch here, but I don't get it. I barely had my BCR working beforehand, but I could assign a knob to a control and control it MOST of the time. I tried installing this kit-n-kaboodle, I even opened BC-Edit and manually assigned all the knobs and buttons per instructed (though some terminology clashed with what BC-edit calls things). I saved it as a preset, did the whole unlatching of the bank selects and everything. I installed and fired up the "prjBCR2000console" app, which shows up in the task manager, but otherwise does nothing. I fired up SONAR, and now my USB driver is gone for the BCR, and reinstalling it doesn't bring it back either. I force-quit everything and attempted to reinstall the USB driver and got no love. Running the BCUpdate app reveals that the device IS communicating, but SONAR just doesn't want to see it. What exactly is supposed to happen when this thing is running again? And does anyone have any clue what may have happened to my USB driver for the BCR?

Hmm. As you say, no-one else appears to have had any problems. Starting from the top.... 1. Ensure you have version 1.1.1.1 of Behringer's MIDI driver installed. Previous versions have some rather nasty bugs 2. Ensure your BCR2000 firmware is at release 1.10. You can check this by turning the unit on, the firmware release is displayed at startup. 3. From Sonar, remove all MIDI devices from the options menu and then exit Sonar 4. Unregister just the control surface DLL as documented in the release notes. Do not worry about the .EXE. This is not visible directly to Sonar itself. At this point you are definitely in a situation where the plugin is not going to be affecting any behaviour you now see. However, to be quite certain, reboot your machine. Now re-enter Sonar and verify that all MIDI devices are visible and that you can now select them from the menu and activate them. 5. Exit Sonar and re-register the control surface DLL - just re-run the install script if you wish, that will do the trick. 6. Re-enter Sonar and add the control surface, assigning it to the BCR2000 01 ports as documented. 7. Verify that when the SHIFT key on the control surface is pressed twice, you see the console UI. If you do not, something is definitely wrong. 8. If so, remove the control surface using options/control surface and then on a Sonar MIDI track, set record on and twiddle some knobs on the BCR. These should record as MIDI CC events. If they do not - and you have the BCR MIDI ports enabled and Midi omni all channels as the input to your MIDI track, something is wrong. If at this stage you are still stumped, please let everyone know on this thread & we'll try and help.

In order to set up the BCR I would recommend using the sysex string provided by aj on sourceforge. The sysex de-links the 4 encoder select buttons allowing you to manually program them as defined in the release notes. Many have reported issues saving presets back to the BCR using BCEdit due to an issue with the current version of Java. Good luck getting up and running. Aj's plug in is pretty slick.

I used the sysex string to decouple the bank select switches, that was easy, just importing it right into the BC-edit proggie. That allowed me to set the individual buttons. My problems seems to be bigger than that. Opening SONAR works fine, but when I open a project, I now get this error: "unable to invoke console. Re-register it by double-clicking on the pcrjBCR2000Console.exe file and then try it again." This also opens an infinite amount of SONAR instances (though only one appears in the Task Manager). As you might guess, double clicking on the aforementioned file does nothing. Ever since I first ran the install file, my RUN window is totally fragged as well. It now only recognizes commands with their file extensions. So, START|RUN|CMD doesn't work, but START|RUN|CMD.EXE will. Ack!

Hmm. A weird problem here. My immediate thought is that somehow you don't have the visual basic runtime where windows can reach it. This is the MSVBVM60.DLL file. If there is not already a copy in your \windows\system32 directory, you might like to copy it there and then reboot and try re-registering the console EXE (prjbcr2000console.exe), and then BEFORE you go into Sonar, bring up task manager (ctrl+alt+Del) and check in the processes tab that the console is NOT running. It should have terminated immediately after self-registering. If it is still running, then it couldn't register itself, which is a problem with the underlying operating system. I can't for the life of me see how anything here could interfere with your start menu though. The software simply doesn't go anywhere near this area - the install script only registers the components you need, that's all it does. I'm sure you will be aware from the install notes that unregistering the control surface DLL will always return Sonar to its previous state. If you do this but your run menu is still behaving oddly, then my suspicion would be that either your PATH environment variable or your file association settings are somehow incorrect. This software does not touch any of this stuff though, so the cause for that would be some other environmental factor.

....wicked - the one small piece of info I can add is that 'regsvr32 /u bcr2000control.dll' did not work me. I forget exactly the message but it was something to the effect of 'file could not be found'. Ultimately, I ran regedit and manually deleted all keys relating to BCR2000control. I then reinstalled 5.0 and applied the 5.01 and 5.2 patches. After installing 5.0 I ran 'install.cmd' for v1.1 and it worked fine. I tested the plug under the 5.01 and 5.2 patches successfully each time. Currently everything is running smoothly. I am now in the process of doing some housekeeping on my system to prepare for a full Ghost back-up.

ORIGINAL: aj my suspicion would be that either your PATH environment variable or your file association settings are somehow incorrect. I came across that tidbit whilst troubleshooting actually. When I look at the path variable it looks correct (ie, the %systemroot% syntax seems correct), but there's a ton of other variable info related to programs in there, mostly separated by semicolons. Should there be more info in that field than the basic "system32" path? (note: sorry to jack this thread into a "fix my 'puter" situation. Once I get some time this weekend with the machine hopefully I can fix it up and return to talking about the control surface!)

AJ, please could you offer some advice on where I may be going wrong installing this control surface. First let me start by explaining what I have installed so far: version 1.1.1.1 of Behringer's MIDI driver installed. BCR2000 firmware is at release 1.10 I decided to use preset no. 15 as this seemed to be initialised, in other words I would not overwrite an existing preset. bcr_egroups_1.syx sent to bcr2000 via sonar sysex send (I also ensured that that correct midi port was selected). Run the install.cmd batch file to register the files (also copied bcr2000.dll copied to shared surface folder). The bcr2000 midi input /output drivers (usb) are recognised and selected in midi devices of sonar 6.2. programmed the encoders as described in the installation notes. I have followed your installation notes as best as possible, now here is the problem: I can select the bcr2000 control surface and assign the bcr midi input / output drivers from the list when adding a control surface in sonar 6.2, however sonar will not remember or latch onto the drivers. The tool bar for control surfaces does not show the selected control surface. If I try to add the control surface again it is in the add control surface table but without midi input / output ports assigned (these are blank, however I can add sonar's ACT control surface and assign the bcr2000 midi inputs / outputs without any issue) Hope you can help or advise where I have made mistakes. Thanks James

Check the ports aren't assigned to any other control surface. Sonar sometimes has an odd habit of reassigning them. Check that the BCR2000 [01] in and out ports are enabled in options/midi and then try again. Also, I've noticed that it is wise to turn power off to the BCR when plugging in the USB cable, then turn it on. Finally, might be worth turning OFF the BCR, start Sonar which will complain about no MIDI in/outs, remove all MIDI devices in Sonar, exit Sonar, turn BCR back ON, re-enter Sonar and re-select midi in/out devices and re-add the control surface. Sonar is a bit quirky in this area.

Now I get the install file to execute fine, I get through step 6 above, but do NOT get step 7. When I start SONAR, with no project loaded, all is well. I can add the control surface and assign the proper ports fine. As soon as I open a project, I get teh dreaded "unable to invoke console. Re-register it by double-clicking on the pcjBCR2000Console.exe file and then try it again." The problem is this notice starts spawning instances of SONAR ad infinitum, and I have to kill the process. Unloaded the control surface prior to opening another project fixes it, but still no joy with the surface. Ack!

mmmm. Well, what that message is saying is that the separate console UI process isn't registered. It should register automatically by being run once i.e double-clicked from explorer. Assuming that naturally you have done this, then I conclude it is failing to self-register, something I don't think I've ever seen happen before on a Windows system. (it is an automatic feature, not something I explicitly coded for, just built into VB6 when it makes executables). By any chance are you not running as a system administrator?. This might cause a problem inasmuch as you would then not have the necessary registry permissions. Or you may be running some unusual antivirus software which is causing problems. Alternatively either the vb runtime cannot be reached or possibly - though unlikely, the MSCOMCTL.OCX component is not registered. If all else fails, perhaps try downloading again. It's unlikely you have a corrupt download but then again sometimes things happen that winzip doesn't pick up. Finally there is a small possibility that you have either registry or file corruption problems on your machine. It is always worth running some quick sanity checks e.g check disk, just to be quite sure there isn't something weird going on. I'm really sorry to hear you're having difficulties. I know many other people have been successful, so the current indication is that your machine has some kind of gremlin - but, anyway, these are the things I would check out.

okay, random update of note: So I deleted all the reg keys related to "bcr2000control" like suggested in an earlier post. I reinstalled and everything seemed to take okay. Now I can start SONAR, add the control surface, start pcjbcrconsole.exe (which stays open as a process if SONAR is open, is that right?) AND open a project. No errors, all is well. What I DON'T have is a console, an even more strange is that the two right-most buttons in top two rows of buttons trigger my Kontakt sampler! I checked their settings, and they're set to transmit on channel 16, with CC values of 71,72 79, and 80 respectively. I think I'm getting closer, but still can't make heads or tails of it.

I'm going to comb through the docs for some clues, if anyone might know what I'm doing wrong feel free to lob me an easy one. Virtual beers await you.

Hi ...wicked. I get the identical error when trying to save a preset back to the BCR. Apparently it is related to the version of Java you are running. aj has noted this in an earlier post. As a workaround I was able to export the sysex from BCedit and play it back to the unit via MidiOX. I understand SONAR can also do this as well but I was just more familiar with MidiOX. Good luck!

update: well, sending sysex through SONAR didn't do a thing. It doesn't even look like the BCR is receiving the info (doesn't the LED do something fun if it is?). Nevertheless, I'm stumped and can't get any functionality out of the thing. I'd love a hint... or some kind of suggestion I could try. I did notice something in the docs (unrelated, but...) I'm going to refer to Step 6, but before I do a note about these: these are not actually sequential instructions are they? I say this because the documentation looks like you proceed in order, but then step 5 provides an alternate method, not the next step in the process. I only bring this up because it confused me when dealing with ungrouping the "bank select" switches (which I wish were consistently referenced and referred to as the encoder groups, since I mis programmed them when setting the preset up in BCEdit). So, step 6 says to exit SONAR and use the BCR's edit functionality to redefine the four bank select keys. I hate to be a pain but I can't tell if this means that you can edit them in BC-Edit (which I did after importing the SYSX command to ungroup them) or using onboard editing in the BCR unit (which I'll freely admit I do not know how to do, nor is that damn thing intuitive about it at all). Step 6 also says to "send MIDI CC on channel 1" but the very next paragraph says "configured to transmit on MIDI channel 16". I'm confused, is that contradicting information? I reckon while I'm at it, here are some other questions that might help me with my own ignorance: In the setup appendix, + The Bank Switches are spec'd out, and the instruction "momentary ON" is given. In my BC-edit software, I don't see this as an option, is it called something else in that editor? + same with the transport switches and the term "latching" + The "shift" key that keeps getting referred to, I"m a little confused on where that is and why it's different from the others. I haven't programmed any one key to be majorly different in function, just CC assignments. Is that a feature of the actual control surface? Whew, sorry folks, just trying to make this bird fly.

Minor update: switching the "output" setting in SONAR's SYSX view to "2" (there's a total of 4 here, which confused me, I thought there'd be 16... does this refer to devices and not channels? I have my audiophile's MIDI and the Behringer unit... does that mean 4 total [2in/2out?]) and when I send the bank the BCR receives data! Yay me! Now it looks like controls are set up right, at least the momentary nature of the buttons, but nothing happens when I press or twiddle ANY control. In fact, my store|edit|learn|exit controls are dead too. But I'm closer now!

MAJOR BREAKTHROUGH! Well, I did some more uninstalling/reinstalling, and dug through the registry quite a bit doing ruthless deletes. Got everything reinstalled and: I CAN SEE THE CONSOLE! Hazaa. The shift key twice bring it up, and it reflects changes made in the track view. This is a major deal! EDIT: now I've fixed some small settings issues with the buttons, I am happy to report that I am now fully functional. Thanks beyond words AJ, I can now use this unit in the way the good lord of digital music intended. And thanks everyone for not giving me any hints and making me work for the answer

a bump of sorts, as I'm now in the world of cheap control surfaces... To folks that are using AJ's plug, I'm interested in knowing: 1) the per-channel EQ: how does this show up on the BCR2000, ie: what parameters map to which knobs? -and- 2) in Sonar 6, with the console view in focus, and 'show assignable controls' selected for the fx, does the BCR give you control over the exposed parameters? Haven't yet bought the surface, but am looking at it as a compliment to the bcf. Thanks all nfv
