Used to love "The Bill" back in the days of Burnside et al - but I must admit it hasn't been worth watching for many years now [sigh]. I could never understand, if they wanted to make a completely different show, why not start a new one instead of stuffing up a quality one?

100% with you Bill - they subtly moved away from some decent plot lines to concentrating more on the 'characters' when they changed the format from 30 minutes to an hour IMO.
I still can't work out how you managed to translate and understand the Cockney accent though Guvnah!!

Everyone has a soft spot for Cockneys and Londoners in general over here Bill.
To us subjects living out in the provinces, the 'Smoke' seems like a different world - a mixture of high wages and high costs of living mixed with an almost tangible foot in the past.
You see TV interviews with elderly folk who recall vividly the seemingly never ending air-raids and the 'spirit' of a city maintaining some sense of 'normality' during the Blitz contrasted against news stories of city stock traders earning six figure bonusses at Christmas.
Both extremes somehow seem anachronistic to the rest of us I guess - the streets of London are still paved with gold, if you can afford it I guess!

The general impression we get down here Steve is that London is largely populated by Eastern Europeans, Indians and Arabs. I'm surprised and delighted to hear that there are still pockets of the original ethnic inhabitants still to be found!

Don't forget those wonderful taxes! they take 40% for income tax and 18% for sales tax (aka vat).

I think that impression is accurate for the whole country Bill - the problems that arise from whatever situation happens to be newsworthy are usually from either extreme.
While various right-wing groups bemoan the presence of 'foreigners' in the country, they usually, and very narrow-mindedly, seem to conveniently forget that most of the so-called foreigners they seek to repatriate were actually born in this country - many now are second and third generation citizens.
At the other extreme, you get so-called 'politically correct' groups in society, and more frighteningly, in schools, that make it their business, for example, to ban traditional Christian events and celebrations such as school nativity plays in case such productions offend ethnic groups in the community. Sadly, the people whom these decisions are meant to appease are normally quite unoffended by them anyway!
I think we are, as a nation, almost being brainwashed to disown all of our history - bad as well as good - and concentrate only on the here and now. A policy which means all layers of society are continually 'treading on eggshells' lest they incur the wrath of the Political Correctness police.
Ah well, back On Topic - for the Wedgies of Sin are death, apparently!
