OT - I've never hated as much as I do right now

This sucks. I know technology is supposed to be value-neutral, and that it all depends on what people do with it. But someone invented this process. You can't shake the devil's hand then say you're only joking.

    As I have always said

You do not need to have talent in this business, you only need to be (word omited to not cause offence) prepared to sell yourself

It's the Spice Girls. It's not exactly fine art to begin with, so I don't think it represents the fall of western culture or anything if they are doing this.

AWESOME!!! They are back!!! (not kidding, I really love them a whole bunch). I hope their new songs are as good as their old stuff. Some superbands that make a comeback tend to put out albums that lack a lot because they focus more on the tour, where they know they will make most of their money. I don't care if they can't sing great. They are so cool, and their songs are really catchy. They are SO much better than all those boy bands that came before and after them. I gotta call my sister. YES!!!

The technology is old hat now, they are just using a better way of doing it, its one step removed from miming, which has also been used by "live" performing bands before. Pitch shifting software has been used on live vocals for some time now iirc.

In the days beofre automated pitch correction, singers had to actually work on singing in order to be presentable. Unfortunately, what they sang often sucked, but it was at least done well. Nowadays, people don't even need to sing well to suck, so they can get right to the sucking without a lot of effort. I think this, in effect, solves your value neutral technology dilemna.

    someone invented this process

    I wish I invernted this process...then I'd be RICH!!!

The way I see it, live vocals are not really the point of a Spice Girls show. People aren't going to see great musicians at the top of their game, they're going to have a big night out, dance to the hits, and see some costume changes and fireworks and stuff.

For my money, there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. Wouldn't go myself, but it's not aimed at me.

    That was my thought too...

"Who goes to hear them sing?"
Hell, I'd go with a set of good earplugs as long as I was close enough to enjoy it.

In all honesty, though, they are not musicians... they are entertainers. If that's how they entertain, so be it. If people would buy tickets to watch me jump rope on stage, I'd do it... I could use the extra cash.

Yeah, indeed. There's a good point to be made about useful role models and the Spice Girls. I thought that fact that they were all fairly normal looking and weren't all really skinny or anything was pretty good.

Pop groups, innit? It's nothing new. We've had The Monkees and the Osmonds before, and now we've got this. I've got no issues with it.

Hey, some pop groups are really cool. Like the Monkees did a cover of a Paul Revere and the Raiders Steppin Stone. We turned that into a heavy metal song that sounds more like Space Truckin than it does Monkees. But it is cool.

There have been times where people complained about the lack of depth to 80s music, but 80s music is cool nowdays.

If we want to complain about technology, lets look no further than the guys sitting at DAWs recording in isolation.

The artists I grew up with that did it all themselves were Todd Rundgren (where most of something/anything was solo) and Tomita. However, Rundgren did it wit an 8 track. Hard to imagine that now days. Tomita did use sequencers, but by today's standards, that was a very complex task.

Plus, auto tune things are cool when you intentionally over use them and it is an effect.

Vocoders were pretty lame about 3 months after Kraftwerk started using them. They are fun again now.

My thoughts exactly. Hell, I just assumed that the Spice Girls lip-synched all their live shows anyway - now I know better.

They are SO much better than all those boy bands that came before and after them.

I hate to break this to you.... but they're not a boy band, maybe ask Robbie Williams, I think he checked personally on all of them.

Okay, this must be the epiphany of junk : now I'd love to hope that every one will finally dig the very simple concept that Yes we CAN do anything and that we'd finally be able to collectively move up to the next level: developing some kind of good taste and common sense. Just because we can DO it doesn't mean it has to be done.

Seriously, after seeing the trailer for "John Rambo" and reading this, I have no hope. Not that I had any before, mind you. Actually I don't think we're getting worst either - we just have reached the golden age of mediocrity and gave ourselves all the means to gloriously bask into our shallowness. And the proof has been established that you just can't choke on crap.

So what's next? A reunion tour for a Milli Vanilli tribute band, sponsored by McDonald?
