Thanks Don, actually "just" put up remix 1 :-) W/the vox dly changed to a slapback, pushed the vox slightly and the lead, added a couple small envelopes, you know how it goes ;-) I feel like an eye doctor? Is it better like this, or like this? Number 1 or number 2? The one thing we all hope is that by the time we get to number 6? It's not worse than number 1 :-(

I like this one better.  Seems smoother and more "glued".  Really nice vocals man.

Hey, Robby,

Killer job on this dynamite cover!  Great guitar work, excellent vocals as always, and the current mix sounds balanced, loud and clear.

I saw John Fogerty do this one live a few years back at a State Fair venue, and he still puts on a great show.

Really nice job, bro!

I started playing this song in high school, and it's one of my all time favorite CCR songs.  I haven't heard the original in a while, but it seems that you stayed pretty close to the original recording.  That said, I would like to hear the lead vocal a tad louder, but I can live with this.

Lynn :-) Back in the day... I'm there with you! I never did this one back in the day? But this is music toat speaks to me. And based on your advice, I did bump the vox up a bit in the 1st remix :-) Thanks for listening, and for commenting.

Re: Old Skool 2013/09/11 23:36:45 (permalink)
Per my comments in the OP, I just did the 2nd (and hopefully final) remix. A lot of changes... I'm always afraid I'll break it. But I've learned a lot from those here, and learned to listen critically to my own shiz. I think it's a keeper :-)

If you think I broke it, please let me know how and where. Again, I'm really working on the mixing aspect and trying not to suck at it. Even if you think it's minor? I would appreciate constructive comments. I did a lot w/the transients (per the OP) in this version, the acoustic guitar is where I want it, the kick, the snare, the vox, changed EQs, changed compression, limiting, lots of changes... But you know how it goes? I wanted to punch the drums up, and I think they are there. That snare is intended to punch you in the nads (modified the compression/EQ and the transients), and you can hear the kick much better (thanks to work on the transients)

I'm not sure if the vox are a little too present in this mix. I want it to be done, but I also don't presume to be the expert on the mix, just trying to improve.

Thanks.

P.S., either the vox may be to present, or "the whole mix may be too present." I may try one last stab at it tomorrow, with an overall scoop in the presence range of my vox, maybe around 3K, I'm going to play with it (hopefully 1 last time) tomorrow. A few more experiments and then it is pinched off, like a musical turd to sink in to the cesspool of obscurity. (still a fun one though!)

Re: Old Skool 2013/09/12 05:26:25 (permalink)
Just listened to the new mix and I think the acoustic guitar is now broken. ;)  It sounds too present to me, and a bit odd somehow, to the point where it's taking away from the drive/grit of the song.  I'd back it off again (maybe undo some of that transient work you added).

Also, I don't recall the drums being this compressed in the prior mix, but the cymbals are sounding splashy and the snare sounds like it's been completely flattened.  There's no "pop" left in it.  That goes for the overall mix as well.  Too much compression on this mix, IMO.

Can you post the prior version somewhere for comparison?

I appreciate everyone's input! It's tough to thank everyone individually when it's been a few days and they add up?

But I want you to know... I appreciate each an every one who commented more than I loved my last ex wife! I appreciate you all, and the fact that I don't have to pay you? Child support, or Alimony? Well... Let's just say, I would kiss each of you on the mouth, THAT is how much I appreciate you. (or perhaps some other body part... I REALLY appreciate you...)

What would make my day is if Herb and Warren would listen and comment? (A few others too?) If they don't? Well, I wrote a song? "It is what it is..."

Started working on the new one tonight :-) It's going to be "Epic..." Stupid fingers aren't as fast or as smart as they should be. So it's one of those practice it for a week or two and work on the coordination and callouses routine... Stoopid Fingers.

Excellent job.  The mix is so clear and crisp and natural sounding.  Vocals are perfect.  The bass and kick are eq'd really well together.  The guitars are so crisp and eq'd perfectly - just the right amount of compression and very bright without the highs being hyped.  Very "pro".  Are you mixing on headphones or speakers?

Absolutely fantastic, Robby!   The acoustic guitars, bass and electric are all right where they need to be and it is a full, rich mix. Drums fit perfectly, IMO. The singer's not bad either!  Might be your best mix to date.  HEY, I just hears 7BR and you did a nice job.  It's hard to be the Eagles but you come darned close!
