I am in Dubai and I watched it with Arabic commentary, which was odd, sounding like the commentator was trying hard to explain things. For some unexpalined reason the only English language channel showing it on my package had vertically a split screen with the same picture on both halves, which gave me a headache. so I flipped channels Nice to See Mike Oldfield and Evelyn Glennie up there. Macca pops up everywhere now.

What was missing was the Cakewalk First-Class Upgrade Compliments of Cakewalk commercial. Speaking of which, they kept on breaking away to commercial break every 5-7 minutes... Might as well mix in some Super Bowl highlights. But yeah, the 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony had a lot of pop and eye candy including a cool finale and lighting of the cauldron. The Queen being there, a long with Prince William and his bride gave it a very royal touch.

They did a great job. Even Paul McCartney got a little choked up for a split second at the beginning of Hey Jude.

Also the choice of Underworld to create the music for the ceremony was totally inspired. Listening on our 7:1 cinema system (and actually prompted by the BBC to crank it up) it was powerful, relevent, massively punchy when it needed to be and was a total musical and emotional triumph. I understand they are going to officially release the Opening Ceremony music now.

When I saw all the sheep etc, I have to admit to thinking WTF ? this is going to be a bit boring, unless you're welsh, but fair play to Danny Boyle and everyone who took part - it was brilliantly executed and really quite breathtaking at times. The way they transformed from one scene to another was just fantastic - wouldn't have thought it possible so quickly on that scale. Loved the little bits of humour too. When the Bond bit first came on I actually thought - blimey that Queen lookalike is really very good ! The best thing of all though for me was how secret they had managed to keep most of it. Usually these days things like this have all been leaked months in advance and there are no real surprises. Does it justify the price tag ? If the Olympics themselves do, which I don't know one way or the other, then yes. Time will tell I guess.

I didn't see it... I hear it was ..... ummmm, politically biased. Such a shame the Olympics have to be used for political theater. I thought the spirit of the Olympics was to celebrate the abilities and talents of the athletes from all the nations, coming together as one, if only for a few days. From the opening, to the hair trigger knee jerk responses to issues where the athletes have walked off the field, to others refusing to practice next to another nation to dropping out of their sport competition because they would have to compete against athletes from a nation they do not like...... I'm sorry to say, this Olympic competition is off to a less then acceptable start for me...... Where did the Olympic Spirit go?

There are always those that will twist things to their own agenda, including those that will bash a stunning piece of work because it suits their political agenda to do so instead of just enjoying the spectacle for what it is, which was an interpretation of British history and a celebration of the things we as a nation do well. By necessity, condensing all that into a short space of time will always mean that some things get included and some left out, which will be seen by some as bias, I've even seen people saying that Kenneth Brannagh, who played the part of Isambard Kingdom Brunel was smiling "in a evil way" WTF ?? The only thing I didn't really understand was why all the announcements were made in French first. Seemed an odd thing to do.

Well I figuered out why I couldn't find it on Dish...at Z:30 in the morning! I had the guide set on HD and it wasn't available in HD. !**** I didn't see all of the opening-went out sometime after the NHS ...but up to that I thought it was EXCELLENT! I did notice Oldfield wasn't playing a Spacey guitar...that was the only thing I didn't really care for...but he was fantastic. Truely a fantastic opening and loved getting to see so much of London. And the Queen with Bond! Now how can ya beat that? It can't be beat. 5-Stars on what I did see.

I'll have to see if the opening ceremony is being rebroadcast or available on you tube to see it. As far as that goes, yeah, I know what hearsay is all about. However, the other things, refusing to train next to someone from a country they don't like, or withdrawing from competing against them because you might have to touch them, or storming off the field because the wrong flag was shown..... come on... where is the Olympic spirit?

I don't think it was particularly political. We all know Danny Boyle's leanings, but the stuff he 'slipped in' (like the CND logo) seemed to be completely relevant to the era that the music was portraying. In any case, I'd argue that you can't (or indeed shouldn't) airbrush out politically sensitive or embarrassing events as if they'd never happened. The CND marches, Greenham Common etc were valid, if maybe misguided, reactions to the very real threat of a nuclear holocaust and I can't see any problem in alluding to them. I thought the whole tone was kept just right, and never strayed into "political theatre" at any time. And there was definitely no trace of any jingoistic/triumphalist slant coming through in the events depicting the history and heritage of Great Britain. If anything, most of the history lesson was given with a wry sense of humour, slightly self-deprecating and definitely tongue-in-cheek. There was, for me anyway, a slightly uncomfortable irony with the passage dedicated to the NHS - I couldn't help thinking that it could be viewed as slightly obscene when, as a nation, we can find billions of pounds to fund an Olympic Games when said NHS is on its knees. Mind you, having said that, even if they poured that amount of money into public healthcare it would make little more than a dent. But on seeing the collosal expenditure, it must appear quite repugnant to anyone on a three-year waiting list for a life-saving operation, or being told that they can't get funding for life-changing medication because they live in the 'wrong' postcode.
