I see it now has a facility that you can insert your own VSTs into its signal flow. Just as well...

btw I bought v5 with the promise of a free v6 (dynamic eq being the carrot) but I'm buggered if I'm forking out the extra for advanced version.

I never really thought much about Dynamic EQ before the Ozone 6 hype, but like the concept. What other options are out there for folks interested in one? I was putzing with a google search earlier but not sure how to separate the wheat from the chaff.

I don't believe you can use 3rd part software there. I believe you can load one of the Ozone 6 modules only. Someone correct me if I'm wrong on that.

I purchased Ozone 5 about a week before they announced Ozone 6. I was pleasantly surprized that izotope included my purchase time for the free upgrade, but I cannot say that I am loving ozone 6. I think I will continue to use ozone 5 in the DAW. I am not sure that they added anything, but they did remove stuff.
Likes:
The standalone app. I think that is going to help me the most in the future
Gui:it is cool and fun to move the dials, but just a different look really
Dislikes:
The individual presets, ie are somewhat hidden from view. I just found how to access them.
Removal of Reverb and Gate.

apparently another forum a different post this is what is missing:

credit to jantex at KVR posting:
Things missing:
1. Reverb
2. Two algorithms in Maximizer are not there.
3. Other dithering algorithms apart from MBIT+ are gone.
4. Imager misses controls for phase, polarity and delay offset.
5. Gate/expander gone
6. Dynamics histogram view gone
7. Due to the change of GUI the scaling sliders for individual processes are gone

What we got:
1. Nicer GUI
2. Dynamics EQ
3. Standalone app (which I don't really need)

Has anyone here trialed it yet? I hope it has full screen mode for the standalone. I wonder what export options it has? I'm not worried about fewer dither, limiter modes and I never once used the gate. I like the things I never use being absent.

And now it can load 3rd party plugins too :)

MDynamicEQ. The best one I've found, and I've tried most of 'em. Wait until it goes on sale again for $44. That, or get its big brother MAutoDynamicEQ, which adds spectrum-matching and two more bands.

Once you've dipped your toe into dynamic equalization you'll wonder how you ever got by with just static EQs.

I think about that every time I listen to a wonderful sounding record... how did we get along without Dynamic EQ? :-)

How about Gliss EQ? That was the first product about which I heard the phrase "EQ dynamics". I always turned the "dyn" off.

I presumed as much , thanks for the input!

I did download GlissEQ yesterday and was playing with it on a 30 second track... I kept getting a flashing message that "audio drops out occasionally" but it never went out on me so left me wondering. Perhaps the track was too short to get the dropout (but I assumed it would be when the warning flashed). I didn't really delve into it much other than a few minutes of play time.

The consensus of this thread on Ozone 6 seems to be "why bother?"

I have not been doing mastering separately, and am just now looking to move to that mode (mixing separately from the mastering process.)  I had been looking at Ozone 6 as the entry point, but I was a little baffled by the removal of capability, and the huge price difference between basic and advanced.

So are there other mastering suites that would get more kudos from this group?

Jimbo, you should at least trial Advanced as it is very cool. Having "Insight" on a second monitor is very useful. You can just switch out and off effects and tracks and see what is going on in your mix in real time. It looks great too. You also get the option to use the effects separately.

I think you basic version guys can upgrade to advanced for 399 at the moment whereas for guys like me who have advanced 5 it will still cost 299. Maybe AudioDeluxe will be doing better deals during the grace period (till nov13).

Personally I never used the reverb so I won't be missing it if I choose to upgrade.

.....and ccLarry......welcome back, good to see u again :)

I might demo it BW. I can't see myself paying that much for advanced though.

What would be the difference between dynamic EQ and multi band compression?

Technically, the difference is that a dynamic EQ consists of one or more variable-gain filters, whereas a multi-band compressor consists of two or more broadband compressors with fixed-slope crossover filters in front of them. The dynamic EQ therefore applies gain (or gain reduction) like a filter (or group of filters), based on the filter shape(s). In a multi-band, each compressor applies the same gain to all the frequencies it sees, and there is no interaction between bands.

The more pertinent question is why you'd choose one over the other. In some scenarios, it doesn't matter. But as a general rule, you'd use a dynamic EQ for targeted, remedial corrections and a multi-band compressor for broader shaping and volume maximizing.

Let's say you have a track with a loud resonance at 1.5KHz. You could set up a multi-band with crossovers at 1KHz and 2KHz. When the compressor kicks in, it'd compress all frequencies between 1KHz and 2Khz equally. A dynamic EQ, however, could have a bell-shaped filter centered at 1.5 KHz and a Q of 1, achieving the same end but do so by applying most of its gain reduction to the target frequency with 3dB less impact on the 1 KHz and 2 KHz shoulder frequencies. This is one reason dynamic EQs can be more transparent than a multi-band compressor, but there are also many other reasons.

Re: GlissEQ. It's a great equalizer, but mainly because it lets you overlay multiple tracks' spectra. I don't actually consider it to be a true dynamic EQ in the conventional sense. GlissEQ does respond dynamically, but it's a kind of adjustable attack time rather than a level-based gain calculation. In other words, the gain is fixed but the time it takes to apply that gain is adjustable. That can yield a nice effect, retaining more of the dynamic movement by slowing the EQ action. But it's not dynamic equalization, at least not in the way everybody else defines the term.

So like a bunch of other people noted I was pretty interested in upgrading to Ozone 6 basic with the new Dynamic EQ feature. But that's not in Basic, and $399 to get there.

So.... I thought what if I took that imaginary $399 and spent it elsewhere? Would I be happier? Or get more?

And I grazed and returned back to Spectrasonics (the folks that make the amazing Omnisphere). I clicked on Stylus RMX which I didn't know much about. It's $395 by the way.

Stylus RMX is amazing. I'm swooning. I've got to have it!,,,,

Totally don't have that impression for an Ozone upgrade at that price. But Stylus RMX wow!,,

Great sample videos by the way about it. The Overview alone closes the deal.

Two internal 2TB SSDs laptop stuffed with Larry's deals and awesome tools. Studio One is the cat's meow as a DAW now that I've migrated off of Sonar. Using BandLab Cakewalk just to grab old files when migrating songs.

ArcRex, did you get to keep Ozone 5 after getting the free Ozone 6 upgrade?  After purchasing Ozone 5 last night, before the October 30th date (but maybe not in UK but so what), I was given an Ozone 6 code today.  So therefore, I was never given the choice.  I emailed plugindiscounts and the person said that the code was given by iZotope (no choice?), and that if I upgraded anyway, I would have had to surrender the Ozone 5 license.  Is this true?

I am getting more and more upset with this as the hours pass by.  I did not register/authorize yet, and why should I at this time?

I am demo'ing Ozone 6, and while I like the GUI a lot, there are some missing things:
1.  Imager scope does not work.  Just "dots" move around at the bottom and right hand side.  No "field image."  This may be a bug?
2.  No gate in the dynamics modules.
3.  No intersample peak detection.
4.  No genre-specific mastering presets (I liked those).
5.  No module presets.
6.  Big increase in CPU usage, but for what? It certainly isn't real-time graphics. Better, more power algorithms? Hmm...

EDIT: If given the choice to downgrade to version 5, would you?  This question and the bold one go hand-in-hand.  i would think that unless iZotope gives me a V5 code in addition to my exiting V6 code, I could not turn around and get 6 plus keep 5.

Maybe a reason to register and authorize, make an account at Izotope, is that then under your account info you may be able to access the download for version 5, assuming it is indeed version 5 that you purchased. Surely if you purchased 5, you get 5, regardless of the free upgrade, you purchased 5 simple as, and as long as you were inside the time limit set out, I can't see how they can do anything but give you version 5 AND the free upgrade to 6. Just push the point that you actually purchased version 5 not 6, that's what I would do anyway, plus I would have purchased directly from Izotope.

You would find your download link under 'Legacy Downloads' and the serial under 'Purchase History'

Yeah, live and learn I suppose.  Maybe going for the best price doesn't always yield the best result.  So true in many things.  Overall, I have written a well-composed email to iZotope.  I have an account with them for Alloy 2 and StutterEdit, but nothing with Ozone...yet.  I will see what they come back with and go from there.  So in other words, I won't authorize until they give me the green light to do so.  I purchased Ozone 5 Standard last night, around 10PM, October 29th.

Yeah, well they shouldn't be able to NOT give you 5 seeing as that is what you purchased, but maybe if your purchase went through after the release of 6 they may say that 5 was no longer available or some such thing, but I can't really see how you could loose with a receipt for 5, just depends how hard you want to push :)

Well, I am somewhat impressed by the demo, but I haven't used the earlier versions.  One thing that seems really peculiar is you can't Maximize the window.  I have a pair of 26" monitors and the app takes up about half of one monitor and I can't stretch the window or Maximize.  For a brand new GUI, that seems really lame.

u need to change input settings for imager. re 2 I think they are trying to make it focus on "mastering" so gate and reverb are goneburger. someone on gearslutz said ISP is still available but hidden in options- can't confirm or deny. presets are available on the advanced ozone I think.

If you can buy Ozone for 199 (probably get an extra 15% off at audiodeluxe et al) then it represents exceptional value for money. IMO

Where? I can't find any input settings for the meter. I've tested the VST3 and VST2 versions of Ozone, and even the Advanced version (full module and then the individual module), and it does not work.

Oh, I found intersample peak detection.  It is known as "True Peak Detection" and there is a "button" underneath the Maximizer's GR meter.  Light this phrase up to turn on "True Peak Detection" to prevent "clipping in the analog domain."  I had to cross-reference Ozone 5 for this.

3rd part VST can be loaded in the standalone version only, not in your DAW. Another odd choice. It's better than nothing though.

If you can buy Ozone for 199 (probably get an extra 15% off at audiodeluxe et al) then it represents exceptional value for money. IMO

Everywhere I have looked, the retailers have the same introductory offer that Izotope has at their website: Basic = $199, Advanced = $599.

I did trial last night on a track recorded live.  The recording conditions were less than ideal,  It was a big band.  I had a stereo mic in front of the winds, and separate mics for piano, bass and the kick drum.  One of my students was soloing on bass clarinet (which is why we recorded this.  I did the normal mix in Sonar, but I avoided using master bus effects I would normally do: multiband compression and stereo imager.  I used Concrete Limiter just for safety and didn't crank it.  I mixed to about -6DB peak.

I took that stereo mix into Ozone.  I found most of the presets didn't really make much difference in this case.  There is a very nice feature in the Ozone 6 GUI that allows you to bypass all the Ozone effects, but Ozone automatically adjusts the gain so that you have the same loudness either way.  In other words, it allows you to listen for qualitative improvements, rather than just thinking the sound is better because it is louder.  That is really powerful.

I did find a couple of presets that were a solid improvement.  But the trumpets weren't very present in any version of the mix.  EQ didn't really help much, but the harmonic exciter was able to bring them out nicely.  I went to bed thinking that this resulted in a considerably better product than I would have achieved with my prior methods.  I just listened to it again with fresh ears, and and I like it even better.

So I guess my message is to not focus on the individual specs but look at the entire holistic process with the stand-alone app.

Guys
Thanks for all the comments re Ozone 6 - I have Ozone 5 plus insight so was thinking of upgrading, at least to 6 basic - but after reading all the comments, don't think I'll be bothering - sounds like a retrograde step to me.
Think I'll spend my "allowance" on that Boz labs delay instead - sounds far more fun!
Now all I've got to do is finish the rebuild on the studio, plug in the computers, but as the studio Computers have been idle awaiting the rebuild  since October last year,  I can see myself spending from now to Christmas downloading upgrades!!

This is one of the features that still has me somewhat interested -  I like the idea of being able to quickly make those assessments.
