stevec This is one of the features that still has me somewhat interested - I like the idea of being able to quickly make those assessments.
I'm a novice. I keep hearing the pros say that mastering is 10% about the tools and 90% about the ears. A feature that helps the ears work better seems really valuable.

"A feature that helps the ears work better seems really valuable." I find in interesting that some *producers* and *music enthusiasts* will spend thousands of dollars on software but only have a budget of a couple hundred dollars for the speakers. That kind of approach seems backwards to me.

Very glad I found this thread. I am very happy with Ozone 5, alloy 2 and Sony Sound Forge 11 (which has some nice Izotope plugs in it itself. Wasn't sure about the upgrade to 6 but I am now Thanks

I like that Ozone 6 allows for the 3rd party plug-ins. However in this case I think I'll simplify it a bit further and just use the 3rd party plug-ins for the time being :)....I was a little greener when I first bought Ozone and although I still use it, I'm having fun chaining some of those other 3rd party plug-ins together or using the ones in Sonar to get pretty much the same results. The Pro Channel lets me add 3rd party plug-ins too. Build a few workable chains for different material, save them, and the argument for working faster in Ozone goes away.

I use the exciter and imaging modules of Ozone 5, but I've moved to dedicated plugins for everything else. Not that I need to switch, but what would be good alternatives to these two modules in Ozone with respect to dedicated plugins?

I guess I'm in the minority but I kinda like 6. I liked the gate in 5 but I never really used the reverb. The way 6 is laid out is visually very appealing. The balanced level out for bypass is really handy and I like having a standalone you can quickly drop a wave file in and do some quick work without having to open a host. I still have 5 installed if I need additional limiter algorithms. I don't know if it was worth the $99 upgrade price but I had it budgeted for the studio anyway so I picked it up. I'll be putting it to the test next week when I have to do a job for a client so we'll see how it stacks up to 5, which I like a lot. Just my two cents.

Just clarify, Ozone 5 also has the "gain matching" when in bypass and it is a really useful feature I got Ozone 5 recently and can confirm that the free upgrade does mean 5 and 6 can be run side by side (ie 6 does not "replace" 5) I am also really disappointed with Izotope on this "upgrade" and I think they may have shot themselves in the foot a bit Not only the removal of features (albeit the less vital one but removing anything in an upgrade seems daft) but I definitely got the impression that the big selling point of "dynamic EQ" would be included in the base product To not make this clear in the pre-sale marketing was not great Also, the email giving me my Ozone 6 serial number had a link toOzone 6 Advanced - so it installed the demo of advanced, presumably to entice me to upgrade! - I immediately uninstalled advance and reinstalled the base version All in all I think Izotope have not handled this upgrade well at all, which is a shame as I think Izotope are great

Boydie I am also really disappointed with Izotope on this "upgrade" and I think they may have shot themselves in the foot a bit
I understand the disappointment. We expect upgrades to be "what you had before and more". That's certainly a reasonable expectation. However, I can also understand Izotope's point of view. The whole concept of "mastering" has been quite vague, really since the end of the vinyl era. That technology required very specialized skills to get the most and best sound out of the physical limitations of a needle dragging through a groove. In the digital realm, "mastering" has taken on different meanings to different people, and much of what one person calls "mastering", another person includes in his normal mixing process. On that basis, I definitely see the logic of removing functions that clearly should not be in the mastering phases (reverb and gating). If you are adding verb at the mastering phase, you are trying to cover something up. And likewise, Steinberg's "mastering" product includes restoration tools. Again, that really should not be part of mastering. If you have clicks, pops, and hum in the tracks going to master, that is hopeless. Izotope quote rightly (imho) puts these into a separate product (RX4), which is brilliant by the way. I am sure that if I had purchased Ozone 5 and was dependent on some of the tools they have removed, I would be unhappy. But I see why they did it. They aren't upgrading each and every tool. They are upgrading the process/workflow of the real mastering job.

Right click on the meters and select "I/O Options" and check the "Automatically match effective gain" - voila! @ cparmerlee They are some very good points and I actually agree with everything you say I just have a slightly bad taste in my mouth from expecting the "Dynamic EQ" and not really seeing any other major improvements - apart from the sexy gui There may be lots of improvements under the hood but if there are I don't think Izotope has done a very good job of telling us - are the existing functions improved over Ozone 5?? - it is not clear

I upgraded and am happy to finally have a standalone suite! Rea;lly needs full screen mode and other areas do feel like a work in progress- eg adding a new module by default places it behind maximizer which is not ideal. I hope they work at it as it has massive potential IMO. No more meter bridge- just Insight.

I love that in standalone you can do edits to the wave like trim and fades. Being able to use 3rd party plugins is really cool. I too wish you could maximize the size but I like the new version overall.

Just installed it. Great news you can trim and do fades, as well as gain matching. Up until now I've been using Slate FG-X for the maximizer. It's cool to still be able to use that. I've mostly been using Ozone for stereo imaging and other plugs like FG-X for the rest of the job. After trying this out I may have to rethink my workflow.

Hello, As I stated before, I will continue to wait this out to see what any consensus is one way or the other. I also can see folks point of view regarding the removal of modules as it works for them.. Not (potentially) being a part of their mastering workflow. But.. when a company, has a fairly well respected Guide published that dedicates a full chapter plus to a process that now is for whatever reason removed (Reverb).. for me gives me reason to pause and question and not upgrade at this time. Still hopeful for a turn-around. Ever the optimist. Chapter 8: REVERB What’s the Goal of Reverb when Mastering?

Yeah, it doesn't work when used as a plugin for me, but it does in standalone mode. Glad you got the version 5 thing sorted :) it's a very good plugin, 6 isn't that bad, it has some good stuff, sounds good, it is what it is, didn't cost anything so . . . I'll probably use 5 ADV way more, but thinking of trying out some IK and waves stuff, like the idea of hand picking the various elements and mixing and matching, plus I like new toys :)

Yes. I can confirm this. The presets are much more limited, which may or may not be a bad thing. Here is a response from the iZotope guy on the matter: "The presets were indeed cut down. For Ozone 6 we really wanted to focus on a great mastering workflow and tried to reflect this in the presets with a more curated list of presets applicable to mastering. Additionally we tried to label presets and provide descriptions that gave a sense of how you could expect the presets to affect your audio rather than a technical description of the types of processing used. We found that our genre-based presets were commonly used across genres and that it’s hard to create a preset that would be relevant across all songs of a genre. Users should be able to get better results quicker by instead choosing for a preset that offers an effect that they feel their song may be lacking or solves a problem they find in a mix." Overall, I am OK with the limitation, and it makes sense what they did. It forces me to listen and make adjustements rather than to rely on presets. However, since I have 5 and 6, I can always cross-reference a preset in 5 and make adjustments in 6.
