Well - not only authorization is needed, but also ALL the install files you need to install the product. Only the install and maintenance center would not work, because it depends on huge files that have to be downloaded from some server.
 
So - The users should not only have an off-line authorization mechanic, but also the possibility to download all installation files from their software and store them locally in a safe place, in case Gibson goes belly-up and all file servers are shut down. Think a bit how Camel Audio gave access for a limited time to their full Alchemy installer files for registered users. What good does an off-line authorization if you do not have a program to start with?
 
So - by all means off-line authorization, but that is not enough


When I bought Sonar X3 in June 2014, I bought the boxed version with the disc.  The only update I had to download is to X3e, which I have backed up on a flash drive.  Would I be OK with this to re install from my discs, or would I be screwed in some other way that would require the website?

Well, in that case I guess it's good I didn't pay the $100.00 to upgrade from X3 to Professional.  I was considering it but I'm glad now I decided against it.

Feel free to use my username in any way I can support. – This is too depressing and I'll visit back at a later time mainly to check in to see if the CEO has an updated FAQ.
I can't help to think that a year ago many of us including me took advantage of the lifetime updates and I have to wonder if cakewalk had an inkling that they were going to do as they shut the doors within 12 months after that promotion. Feeling ripped off and have sadness for the employees and for all the folks who depend on the software for the living – being a teacher I can't recommend this software to students at this time. Thanks all for your wonderful posts and blogs and maybe someone can step up and buy cakewalk – but until then....

I also think a generic .dat file for all registered users and their registered software would be the answer. I loaded SPLAT onto a non internet connected PC last month and authorising offline generated a .dat file specific to me and that particular machine. How hard would it be for a generic file to be produced for valid users?

That is the bare minimum they should do.  I plan to make sure I have complete system backups before updating Windows 10 so I can roll back if necessary, but I see problems ahead when I need to replace my motherboard or entire PC.
