Philz, Bapu, Scottytunes, Twisted6s and Danny Danzi team up on “Rough Patch”

I originally posted Rough Patch back in January, but, somehow, the arrangement didn’t feel complete to me.  I wondered what it would sound like with a fiddle in there, so, I contacted Scott “Scottytunes” Campbell who had really liked the song, and he generously agreed to give it a shot.  Almost instantly I had 4 world class fiddle tracks, that gave the tune a whole new feel.

The other part I wasn’t thrilled with were my vocals in the chorus which I felt were decent, but not really what I was after.  Enter my fellow ‘LawnGuyLander,’ Mr. “Twisted6s,” Tony Pruden, who re-did my chorus vocals in his own inimitable style, and I now had 5 ‘to die for’ vocal tracks for the choruses.  Rough Patch was now feeling like it had the country-rock-soul feel that I wanted.

I started doing mixes and sent them off to my CHB bandmates Danny Danzi and Ed “Bapu” Kocol for comments.  Well, Danny really got into the tune, and wound up adding 4 amazing guitar tracks.  After some more mixes Danny decided that what the song really needed was real drums played by a real drummer (him), and, man, was he ever right (I have learned that Danny is almost never wrong).  My original EZ Drummer drums survived for about 3 bars in the intro, and then it’s all Danny.  Now that we had real drums, Ed decided that his original bass part just wasn’t what the tune now called for.  Not to be outdone in the redoing department, Ed redid his bass part maybe 5 or 6 times, each one of which, mind you, was just great.

More mixes follow with Danny whipping my butt, mentoring and teaching me the whole way, and finally it was off to Danny for his impeccable mastering touch.  I’m just thrilled with the finished product, and hope you folks will enjoy it too.  It's the top tune on my Soundclick link (in my sig), or play the hi-res mp3 http://db.tt/xuhhigL.

To finish off a long-ish post, I just wanted to add my heart felt thanks to all of my collaborators on this, each of whom added his own special talents to the song.  I feel like one really lucky guy to have been blessed with so many gifted people contributing to my tune.

This is the reason why people shouldn't try to do everything by themselves (including me) and let other people do what they do best. The production on this is certainly radio pro. "yyyeeeaaa...i kinda hit a rough patch", thats the hook man.

Yeah I remember this one :-) This is pretty cool. I love the textures. It's funny because I wouldn't have heard the fiddle in the production, but it's really cool. Tony's vocals are really cool :-) And that chick that's singing with him? She is the ****... This unlikely collaboration turned in to one of the nicest tunes I've ever heard on here. This is freaking awesome!

Thanks for the kind words and listens everyone. Just a quick note...Phil gives me quite a bit of credit, but he did all the work here and mixed this monster. I was calling the song title "jungle juice" for the longest time due to all the styles etc. Upon listening further, I kinda though a sound similar to "Shes Country" would have worked well with this which is why I added in the drive guitars to add some edge to it. Threw in a slide and pedal steel and it really started to take form. That said, the tune was already great before I got involved and didn't need me or anything I had to offer. I was just pleased to be a part of it. Thanks Phil, I had a blast on this also brother and you did a fabulous job and so did all the musicians on this...what a monster piece. :)

Hmmmm... just realized by quoting messages in thank you's  I'm continually bumping the tune.  So... I'll opt for the more standard format-

james- Hey, what's this "throws up" business?   The pearl part sounds pretty good though.  Seriously, many thanks for the high praise, and, yeah, that was quite an assemblage of talent I had with me.

Cian- Thanks for dropping by.  I'm old enough to know where I need help, and not shy about asking for it.  The key for me is when I hear something in my head that I know I can't execute (or someone else could do it better).

Robby- Special thanks to my favorite balladeer for that glowing review.  Yeah, I wasn't really sure on the fiddle either, but Scotty said 'let me do some tracks, and you can use whatever you like.'  Then I had like a brain melt when I heard what he played.  Utterly amazing.

John- Glad to hear that your ears liked this.  Thank you.

Tim- Thanks for the listen and kind words.

Reece- Thank you, my friend.  Yes sir, that was quite a mash up of styles we put together.

Tony- "We're like The Traveling Wilburys....except cooler"  Best comment ever   You get back in here later and take another bow for those extraordinary vocals.

Scotty- See comments to Tony and Robby, and you're due for an extra bow too.  Thanks again for that virtuoso performance.

Bill- Bapu's original bass track was one start-to-finish solo that was the most incredible bass solo ever played.  The problem was that the solo consisted of one Am note played about 8,256 different ways.  He was so far up the neck that he was getting in the way of Scotty's fiddle   We had to reign him in.  Next time we're gonna' turn him loose.

Freddy J- Many thanks for those kind words Dr. Blues.

Jamz0R- And a big 10-4 to you too.  I wasn't going for that, but  it just kinda' came out that way, and I really liked that tune too, and maybe it stuck with me.  Thank you very much.

    Pretty great all around guys.

One thing that occurs to me is that you might try overcompressing it like so many pop tracks these days.  Seems like a lot of pop tracks have the FM radio type compression already applied.  I think it might work with this.

Anyway, great tune.  Great collaboration.  Very fun.

    Peace,

    Ian
